DC Comics Entertainment CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Exactly 75 years ago today, the first issue of "Action Comics" was released with a character on the cover who would change the literary world.
Superman, the creation of Glenville teenagers Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, was an immediate hit and became a worldwide sensation, kicking off the comic book industry which continues today.
At 1 p.m. today, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson will proclaim "Superman Day" at City Hall on Lakeside Avenue. Jerry Siegel's daughter, Laura Siegel Larson, flew in from California to accept the proclamation along with members of the Cleveland-based Siegel and Shuster Society.
A Superman flag will be flown at City Hall and birthday cupcakes will be handed out at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport where there is a Superman display.
Everyone is urged to "Show their Superman" by wearing some article of clothing with the class "S" insignia.
The City Hall proclamation is open to the public. It will be held on the steps of City Hall and moved indoors in the event of rain.
For your birthday you should sleep with Lois and have a beer with Jimmy. Don't get the order wrong on that.
