Someone’s creating a new superhero, which means it must be a day of the week ending in “y.” But Marvel Comics’ announcement about a new Ms. Marvel series deserves special attention. The company announced in a press release today that the new Ms. Marvel will be a superhero of the Islamic faith — the first-ever Muslim title character from Marvel Comics and pretty much the first Muslim superhero from the mainstream comic publishers to get her own monthly book. (Although last year DC introduced Simon Baz, a new Green Lantern who’s currently a member of the Justice League.)

According to the press release, the new Ms. Marvel’s real name is Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old from Jersey City. “Kamala has all of her opportunities in front her and she is loaded with potential, but her parents’ high expectations come with tons of pressure,” Marvel describes. “When Kamala suddenly gets powers that give her the opportunity to be just like her idol, Captain Marvel, it challenges the very core of her conservative values.”

The “Ms. Marvel” name previously belonged to Carol Danvers, a blonde Air Force badass who got fused with Alien genes and developed superpowers. Danvers is now known as Captain Marvel, not to be confused with the Captain Marvel who died in the ’80s or the Captain Marvel from DC Comics who everyone just calls Shazam. (Comic books!) The new Ms. Marvel will feature in a special issue in January before her series begins in February. Which means we only have a couple months to decide: Is America really ready for a superhero from New Jersey?

So I'm thinking this will last about two issues. With art like that it might go three issues.

You guys are some sick fucks sometimes. You're pretty much the intended audience for this kind of stuff.

I'll certainly check this out. New superheroines are always welcome, imho. She can't possibly be any more cliche than pre-Flashpoint Solstice. Whatever they have in store will be unique, I'm sure.

I've spent a small amount of time in Muslim countries. Indonesia is due north, and Malaysia is a little bit further (Kuala Lumpar is a great city). Perhaps as a consequence I'm a little more aware that most of you (save perhaps for Son of Mxy) that the vast majority of Muslims have no interest in blowing up anything, nor care about what people do or don't wear. So, as you indulge in stereotypes, you perpetuate the stereotype of the ugly American. Dumbarses. (I should add that its part of the human condition to engage in stereotypes: most Indonesians and Malaysians think Australians are racists who oppress Aborigines - and indeed we do have racists who would like to oppress Aborigines, but they are a very slim majority).

Otherwise, dismounting from my soap box, I have no objection to a Muslim superhero. But like Simon Baz (who has an Arabic tattoo, which is contrary to Muslim tenets of not altering the human form - someone at DC didn't do their homework) this seems very gimmicky. Does someone's faith really need to be the showpiece of a title? When are the new titles Captain Star-of-David, Super-Buddhist, and The Spectacular Shinto-Man getting released?

And Klinton: you're dead wrong. Marvel are drunk or deluded if they think there is a target market within their existing pool of readers for a Muslim superhero - worse, a Muslim superheroine! Titles featuring female characters in the lead historically sink. If they want a new market, publish it in Arabic and change their distribution channels. Lothar is right on its duration. I give it 12 issues, because if a sack of shit title like Fearless Defenders can last 12 issues, then anything can.

Well the title isn't Ms. Muslim but I can see your point. Marvel probably doesn't see this as the next spiderman but it's enjoying publicity for a new title that the usual type of new title wouldn't get. If they do it right, they might add to their brand and maybe pick up a couple of new readers.

She might work well as a character in the MU,but not a strong enough character to have her own series.

Gimmick. Gimmick. Gimmick.

I still like Captain Star-of-David. "BY THE POWER OF SHALOM!"

Preview here.

Horrible, horrible, art. If I didn't know better, I would think that the zionist dogs who control Marvel comics and much of the U.S. media wanted this to fail.
