Well, I'm sure it's not Southern California.

I was thinking it might be cool if you could post some photos of Afghanistan when you have the chance.
Nothing that would get you courtmartialed, of course. Don't go all Geraldo Rivera on us!

What specifically sucks? The danger? People not friendly? Lack of modern accomodations? Freezing your ass off in the mountains, or maybe scorching heat? The lack of any women who aren't wearing a muslim body-bag?
That would all suck, or maybe you have something else in mind. I think regardless of the suck, it would be an interesting experience for a year. You could keep a journal for a year and document your experience, maybe even write a book about it later.
Just some ideas that might help get you through.

I forget the date that Comrade Obama selected for withdrawal, but while I think it's not in the U.S. national interest to withdraw prematurely, withdrawal would work in your favor, and minimize the time you have to be there. And hopefully re-deploy you to Europe, the U.S., or somewhere else more tolerable.
Regardless, hope you stay safe and it goes by quickly.

I'm in Khandahar right now. So it's not freezing. It's pretty hot, but nowhere near as bad as Kuwait--or South Carolina for that matter. You're thinking of Bahgram.

What sucks the most here is the smell. There's a pond pretty close by that's full of shit. When the wind's blowing, the entire base gets a whiff.

The accommodations are decent considering they're re-purposed connexes, but the gym and the laundromat can be quite a ways off from where I'm situated, which is aggravating. I might have to order a bicycle so I can get around easier.

I wouldn't mind posting pictures of areas outside the wire, but I don't feel comfortable with on-base photography. This place has enough security risks without me contributing to it.

I'd imagine any U.S. military base in Afghanistan is a five-star resort, relative to the rest of the country.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed.

.....In all seriousness though, the living quarters and work areas are well cooled and ventilated. I expected to be sweating non-stop.

Tap water's not potable, but there's bottled-water everywhere--I'm a little paranoid though since there were cases of poisoned bottles in the past; I squeeze every bottle for leaks.

Oi. They sounded the alarm for a rocket attack. Turns out it was a false alarm. So we all woke up and rushed to the bunkers for no reason.

It's amazing how little the [liberal] media even talks about Afghanistan, unless something goes wrong, where they leap to negatively portray U.S. military action.

Afghanistan is finally back in the news with the death of a three-star general.

They also reported that we have slightly less than 10,000 troops in Afghanistan now, and the U.S. plans to completely pull out in the next year. Which is what emboldens these attacks in the first place.

You'd think after the ISIS blitzkrieg across Iraq, Comrade Obama would be more reluctant to double the humiliation (and danger) in leaving Afghanistan to a similar collapse. But then, silly me, I'm talking like Obama has an actual concern for protecting U.S. national interests, and isn't an Alinsky-trained cultural Marxist trying to destroy the nation from within.

I just hope the nation can survive until he leaves office.

Yeah, thanks for the correction, he was a two-star general, I saw that in a report this morning.

I'd still be interested in seeing some photos of Afghanistan, when you have the chance.
I was re-reading your comments about the bed smell there. Haven't they mastered the technology of building an outhouse yet?

I had a friend who traveled to Egypt over 10 years ago, and he said it was the same there, that it partly killed the visit because the smell was so bad everywhere he and his wife went. Even in central and South America, they have a bad problem with dysentery and other illnesses, because the (lack of) sanitation, to put it gently, is often too close to the water sources they get their drinking water from.

Afghanistan: See it like Pariah!

I'm actually surprised, that a lot of provinces have zero insurgent attacks, or close to it. But of course, you're in one of the happening places.

Here's another interesting view of Afghanistan: the illegal Opium-farming market.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-21548230

There seems to be a lot of overlay between where the opium is grown, and where the terrorist attacks are.

To my knowledge, that's the most famous export to come out of Afghanistan. And it seems like a way to combat it is to give the locals and alternative means to earn income. That would also deprive the Taliban of the $100 million or so they earn annually on the opium trade.

Here's 39 Afghanistan photos, taken by The Atlantic (or possibly many by U.S. military personnel) in April 2013.

An image of Kabul.
Afghanistan, roughly the size of Texas, has a population of 31 million. About 10% of which lives in Kabul.

This one is from somewhere in Kabul.

I wonder what they did to get these birds so excited. Probably they're used to getting fed.

It has to be consolidated somewhere. Inevitably, it's going to smell. It's like a large, open air septic tank.

But yeah, I've taken some pictures. They need to be screened by my security officer first before I unleash them on the world.

Some nice aerial photos of Kandahar, by a TIME magazine photographer:
