What the hell happened to it?

I checked out all the comics released for the week of Oct 22, 2014:

 Quote:
All-New Ghost Rider #8
All-New Invaders #11
All-New X-Factor #15
Amazing Spider-Man #8
Amazing X-Men #12
Avengers #37
Avengers And X-Men Axis #3 (of 9)
Axis Hobgoblin #1 (of 3)
Cyclops #6
Deadpool #36
Death Of Wolverine The Logan Legacy #2 (of 7)
New Warriors #11
Secret Avengers #9
She-Hulk #9
X-Force #11

...and I have no idea what the hell is going on.

One comic had Logan dead already, but in another comic, he's been turned into a Wendigo and fighting Collosus. Then another comic had Steve Rogers as an old guy being defended in court by She-Hulk, and the plaintiff's lawyer is Daredevil. Then another comic has Steve working with Namor, then another has him leading Shield and tracking down members of the Illuminati, which include Namor (and they have all the genius heroes like Stark, Richards, Strange, and McCoy, even Hulk on their side.) And then another comic features Shield again but Steve Rogers is nowhere to be found, Shield is being lead by Mariah Hill and they have MODOK on their side. Deadpool is in all the comics because he's as overrated and overexposed as Wolverine now (and I prefer Wolverine because the Wolverine comics aren't trying hard to be funny.)

...and the X-Men books have Beast, but wasn't he on the run from Shield in one of the other comics?

Oh and Magneto and a bunch of villains just saved the Avengers and the X-Men (including Stark and Captain America, who are supposed to be on opposing sides in another comic) from a Red Skull who now has the power of Charles Xavier. And then we get a repeat of AvX with Cyclops, Havok, and the mutants wanting custody of Red Skull because they think they can save whatever is left of Prof. X (forgetting that it was Cyclops himself who killed the prof,) while Steve Rogers and his crew want the Red Skull to stand in trial.

I know they keep changing stuff to keep it fresh for new readers but this thing is confusing either way.

Marvel comics have been around for a little over 50 years now. By the time DC reached 50 they needed their first major reboot. I think marvels probably at the same point

I don't mind the reboot, but it seemed like the rebooted universe isn't even coordinated, with various storylines going on at once - most of them conflicting with each other (e.g. Steve Rogers hunting down Stark and Namor, but working with both of them in another. Wolverine dead in one, Wolverine alive and part of X-Force in another.)

Actually, I agree with you. I'm saying I think at this point there need a reboot to straighten all this out and one that is handled more carefully than either the various soft reboots or, god forbid, the half assed ones that DC keeps having to do and undo because they werent planned out correctly.

I think I stopped caring about Marvel's continuity back with "Heroes Reborn" in the mid-1990's.
Although I did like in the early 2000's when Marvel re-established the original numbering for all their series.

Likewise with DC, many of their characters have been re-booted so many times that the characters are unrecognizable to me. (And there's no example better than LEGION!)

Their approaches to a universe reboot also differed lately. DC seems to lean more towards simply hitting the reset button and overwriting the past (except when they tried to backpedal multiple times). Marvel's most recent universe shakeup is just a series of pulling stuff out of thin air, thinking that it's so clever. It all started with a silly premise - that Fury is really old and has been protecting the universe from all the important threats both cosmic and mystic (with a gamma bullet rifle.) and that the secrets he and Uatu have revealed turned the Marvel U into what it is now.

My wife was actually encouraging me to start reading comics again, so I decided to wiki everything to see what's going on and it feels like a giant cluster fuck since I stopped regularly collecting 8 years ago. I really don't recognize the marvel universe at all anymore.
