CBS Pushes PC Attack on Wonder Woman: ‘Large-Breasted, White' 'American Flag Motif'

  • The journalists at CBS This Morning on Friday promoted a petition by “concerned” United Nations staffers against the honoring of Wonder Woman, a “large-breasted, white woman” who wears an “American flag motif.” The fictional DC comics character is being hailed as an “Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls.”

Talking to Lynda Carter, the ‘70s era Wonder Woman, guest co-host Margaret Brennan insisted the character was “drawing some scrutiny because of the way you’re dressed.” Gayle King catalogued the list of complaints from outraged, dissident UN staffers: “Listen on to what they are saying though, Lynda. ‘A large breasted, white woman of impossible proportioned, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit with an American flag motif and knee-high boots is not an appropriate spokeswoman for the gender equality at the United Nations.'”

King demanded, “And you say what?”

Carter shot back: “It has nothing to do with anything.... Wonder Woman is an idea. This is not the American flag. This is not — it's about fighting for freedom.”

She continued, “Give me a break! I think they are just being silly.... Get over yourself already!”

For a long time she wore a skirt and now sometimes she wears pants. Is she really a white woman? I thought she was greek or something? Maybe if you're not black than you're white.

It's just not Wonder Woman unless she's bringin' the sexy!

I don't like the shift away from red white & blue, to a more "dark" look.

Not impressed.

This last girl reminds me of Lilith, Frasier's wife on Cheers (what's her real name, Bebe Neiwirth, I think?).

I understand that the idea for some time has been to make WW look more Greek. Surprised the comic book character still has blue eyes, to be honest.

I really liked the tones used in BvS. It comes out of my studies in ancient Greek history. Indulging in pedantry for a moment: Amazons would have worn leather cuirasses, not swimsuits especially coloured red and blue when both colours were extremely difficult to get as clothing dyes. The quasi-hoplite armour isn't quite right to be honest (it post-dates Mycanean times - 700BC, and is more 400-250BC) but why quibble. \:\)

There is controversy which we have discussed before about the evolution of established comic book characters so as to steer them towards becoming women, minorities or other ethnicities (Firestorm, Spectre, and most recently Nick Fury, Hulk, Thor, Captain Marvel, Captain America, the new Chinese Superman). On the one hand, why change the legacy of characters for the sake of change? On the other hand, to accommodate non-traditional markets amongst women and minorities, as well as overseas markets, where is the harm especially if it increases sales (the effect on sales of Thor was enormous) and anything which doesn't work can be reversed?

As someone who isn't especially attached to any character and just like good writing, I don't especially care one way or the other, although I see both sides of the argument.

With Wonder Woman I especially see it. A 60 year old character which everyone expects to see as a blue-eyed brunette in a swimsuit bouncing bullets off her bracelet, transformed into a serious melee fighter with a sword and a shield and a golden lasso that seems almost alive and acts like a whip. I thought it was awesome, but anyone expecting to see a bouncy brunette like Linda Carter would have been let down.

I, for one, would have no problem seeing Lynda Carter circa 1977 in that BvS costume.
Or out of it.

BTW, for what it's worth, if the poster for the WW movie is to be believed, the costume in that is a lot closer to the comic book colors. http://www.slashfilm.com/wonder-woman-movie-poster/

Yeah, but scroll up and look again at those stars-and-stripes WW booty shorts!

Yeah. I dunno. If I want porn, its easy enough to find otherwise. If I want to read about Wonder Woman, its probably with my daughters and I'd like them to see a role model who doesn't have her arse falling out of her shorts.

Having said that, I have liked those issues of "DC's Bombshells" which I have read, which has saucy covers and some mild titillation in the story. But the cheesecake in that title evokes a very 1940s vibe - kind of like aircraft nose art - and the title is set in WW2. And the stories are generally pretty solid, which is a saving grace.

I think the "Bombshell" WW costume is a great one. A little innocent eye candy for "the lads" but it doens't look like something a stripper would wear. I wouldn't mind DC adopting that look for the main character at all.
