I was inspired to create a topic aabout this after seeing this video:

Buckley, Kerouac, Sanders and Yablonsky discuss Hippies

The draw for watching this for me was William F. Buckley. And the rest of the crew here are visibly neurotic. It's hilarious for me that these are the great minds of the 1960's counterculture/hippie movement. Kerouac in particular can barely put a sentence together.

From what is most visible of the movement, the prime forces of the hippie movement were first the beatniks of the 1950's, kind of an existentialist writers and poets movement that rose out of the arts, combined with the civil rights movement for Black America. I think the hippie movement fully formed in 1965 with the Vietnam war and protest against the war (and more importantly for many, a motivation to not be sent to Vietnam). The core of the hippie movement was student protest movements at universities nationwwide, led by the college professors who indoctrinated them.

And that is the key to seeing the real and less visible driving force behind the hippie movement: cultural marxism. Led by a core of university professors, whose motivation was to indoctrinate a new generation in the virtues of socialism and the evils of capitalism, to indoctrinate an anti-American/anti-capitalist Marxist ideology. This began with a group of Marxist professors in Germany known as the Frankfurt School, who fled from Nazi Germany to the U,.S. in the late 1930's and began teaching in U.S. universities, and over two decades built a counter-cultural movement that emerged as the 1960's revolution.

The movement died when President Nixon negotiated the end of the Vietnam war, thus ending the draft (Dec 1972). Interesting how quickly the protests died after that. Manifesting it was for most involved about not getting drafted, rather than greater altruistic motives.

But amazingly, as shown in the clip above, some of the movement's most visible thinkers could barely articulate a lucid purpose for the movement. Perhaps they were dupes of the cultural marxists as well.

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/hippie

 Quote:

hippie or hip·py

noun

1. a person, especially of the late 1960s, who rejected established institutions and values and sought spontaneity, direct personal relations expressing love, and expanded consciousness, often expressed externally in the wearing of casual, folksy clothing and of beads, headbands, used garments, etc.

That... sounds like it was written by a hippie. It vaguely defines the movement with a few surface images, without really telling you what it truly is.

 Quote:

Origin of hippie

An Americanism dating back to 1950–55; hip4 + -ie

Somehow it never occurred to me that hippie evolved from the word hip. Which again is an outgrowth of the 1950's beatnik / hipster movement.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_Generation

 Quote:
The Beat Generation was a literary movement started by a group of authors whose work explored and influenced American culture and politics in the post-war era. The bulk of their work was published and popularized throughout the 1950s. The central elements of Beat culture are the rejection of standard narrative values, making a spiritual quest, the exploration of American and Eastern religions, the rejection of economic materialism, explicit portrayals of the human condition, experimentation with psychedelic drugs, and sexual liberation and exploration.[1][2]

Allen Ginsberg's Howl (1956), William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch (1959) and Jack Kerouac's On the Road (1957) are among the best known examples of Beat literature.[3] Both Howl and Naked Lunch were the focus of obscenity trials that ultimately helped to liberalize publishing in the United States.[4][5] The members of the Beat Generation developed a reputation as new bohemian hedonists, who celebrated non-conformity and spontaneous creativity.

The core group of Beat Generation authors — Herbert Huncke, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Lucien Carr, and Kerouac — met in 1944 in and around the Columbia University campus in New York City. Later, in the mid-1950s, the central figures, with the exception of Burroughs and Carr, ended up together in San Francisco, where they met and became friends of figures associated with the San Francisco Renaissance.

In the 1960s, elements of the expanding Beat movement were incorporated into the hippie and larger counterculture movements. Neal Cassady, as the driver for Ken Kesey's bus Further, was the primary bridge between these two generations. Ginsberg's work also became an integral element of early 1960s hippie culture.

In softer euphemistic language, neurotic weirdos indoctrinated in cultural marxism at the universities they attended, who expanded the movement.

 Quote:
ORIGIN OF NAME

Kerouac introduced the phrase "Beat Generation" in 1948 to characterize a perceived underground, anti-conformist youth movement in New York.[6] The name arose in a conversation with writer John Clellon Holmes. Kerouac allows that it was Huncke, a street hustler, who originally used the phrase "beat", in an earlier discussion with him. The adjective "beat" could colloquially mean "tired" or "beaten down" within the African-American community of the period and had developed out of the image "beat to his socks",[7][8][9] but Kerouac appropriated the image and altered the meaning to include the connotations "upbeat", "beatific", and the musical association of being "on the beat", and "the Beat to keep" from the Beat Generation poem.[10]

 Quote:
COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

The origins of the Beat Generation can be traced to Columbia University and the meeting of Kerouac, Ginsberg, Carr, Hal Chase and others. Kerouac attended Columbia on a football scholarship.[11] Though the beats are usually regarded as anti-academic,[12][13][14] many of their ideas were formed in response to professors like Lionel Trilling and Mark Van Doren. Classmates Carr and Ginsberg discussed the need for a "New Vision" (a term borrowed from W. B. Yeats), to counteract what they perceived as their teachers' conservative, formalistic literary ideals.

That gels well with the goals of cultural marxism:
To tear down the support pillars of Western democracy, to undermine the belief systems that resist and block marxist indoctrination, primarily undermining
1) patriotism/nationalism by creating a belief that the nation's political system is inherently unfair/racist/corrupt, paving the way for marxism as a more fair replacement system,
2) undermining Christianity similarly, to prevent it from being a widespread shared opposition belief-system to marxist indoctrination. Christianity's effectiveness seen in the 1980 fall of communism in Poland due to Catholicism, led by the Pope and Ronald Reagan.
3) undermining family values taught by parents and extended family, another way that traditional values are preserved, that resists state/socialist indoctrination.

Cultural Marxism teaches rejection of all these beliefs, to pave the way for abolishing Western Democracy, and replacing it with a new socialist order, over a period of 50 years or so.

In the age of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, it's clear that Cultural Marxism is on the threshold of becoming a majority and establishing a new socialist/marxist order. And emboldened by that, showing their hand, unable to resist showing their repellant true face.

\:lol\:

Reagan had a way of getting his point across with succinct humor, an approach that tends to work better than a lot of pedantic explanation, or getting angry and lashing out at it.

I think the younger generation has romanticized the hippie movement and admires it for the more surface easygoingness of it. While they support Democrats and the benign notion of socialism, I'm not sure they really understand the ideology behind it. Which gives hope that, if they are made to understand what it's truly about, a majority of them might pull away from it and embrace the principles of our Constitutional republic. Rather than passively endorsing what the Bolshevik Democrats would like to replace it with.

Actually your side has really been winning imho. Unions are pretty much toast. Taxes are cut with no worry about the huge and growing deficit. Trump is now talking about cuts in Social Security and other programs. And I don’t know or want to know what the fat piece of corrupt shit smells like but I’m guessing he’s taken a lot more money from the government and his fraud charities than the people fighting for social programs. And a lot of those hippies that protested back in the 60’s and 70’s were actually risking getting drafted with their protests if they were male and staying out of the draft because of being in college. Maybe they smelled but they had more principles than “bone spurs” who spent the 70’s trying to keep black people out of his dad’s properties and than partying with pedophiles.

Yeah... uhh... way to make a topic about the hippie movement into another topic about Trump.

The point is, however benign or spaced out or well-intended, the hippies weren't making a lucid stand for anything, and were either wittingly, or for most of them outside of leadership probably un-wittingly, serving marxist/communist masters. Some of them (including the Black Panther movement, and William Ayers' Weather Underground, and several American communist newspapers) funded directly by the Soviet government.

These noble hippie protestors were mostly protesting to end the draft so they wouldn't end up serving in Vietnam. And as I said, when the draft ended, the protests abruptly ended with it.

But the hippie leadership also disparaged America, and falsely railed on U.S. soldiers as murderers and war criminals. Then-student John Kerry being a prime example. As well as William Ayers, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. Their draft evasion, anti-American rhetoric, and in Ayers and Dohrn's cases terrorism against police and soldiers, is well known. Hillary Clinton, as I sourced in 2008, hated police and the military so much she would not allow uniforms to be worn in the White House, and even called police and Secret Service "pigs". When Chelsea Clinton was overheard calling Secret Service pigs and told she'd be in trouble if her parents found out she said it, she told the agents that she learned it from her parents.

And it should be emphasized again that William Ayers was the mentor of Barack Obama, that Ayers held Barack Obama's first political fundraiser in his home.

Ayers, who had joint booksignings and speaking appearances with Obama for years. Who selected Barack Obama as the executor of funds for his marxist education program, sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation. Ayers, who Obama met with regularly, at least quarterly for funds disbursement meetings, and probably much more frequently than that. Much more about Ayers and Obama's connections at his listing on DiscoverTheNetworks.org:
http://archive.discoverthenetworks.org/summary.asp?object=Persons&category=

And Ayers also as described by the FBI agent who infiltrated the Weather Underground that Ayers led:

Larry Grathwohl interview about William Ayers,Obama's Mentor

You can dress the hippie movement up in all kinds of presumed benevolent intentions. But what it truly was is a movement to undermine, divide and destroy our Constitutional republic, and serve the communist murderers worldwide who would like to destroy us. Specifically named in the video as Russia, China and Cuba, who these "principled" hippies envisioned sharing joint occupation of the United States, and running "re-education centers" that would indoctrinate marxism into all Americans. And kill in their estimate 25 million people who would not accept the new marxist order.

I could cite quotes from Ayers, Dohrn, Bill or Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Barack or Michelle Obama, Bernie Sanders, and many of their subordinates, many quotes from while they served in the Obama administration, that clearly state their hostility toward the United States, and their desire to "fundamentally transform America" into something other than a Constitutional republic.
Their vision of America is closer to Red Dawn. Some activists in the Bernie Sanders campaign were recently caught (on camera, by Project Veritas) talking about "re-education centers" for capitalists. Just like the Weather Underground folks, including William Ayers, in their plans for the country, that the undercover FBI agent above spoke to.

That sounds a lot like Obama's "fundamental transformation", or the next militant step up from it.

How far from the tree could Obama and the Clintons have fallen, who idolized and were mentored by these people?

Kerry's Soviet Rhetoric:
The Vietnam-era antiwar movement got its spin from the Kremlin.

.

.
Part of Senator John Kerry's appeal to a certain segment of Americans is his Vietnam-veteran status coupled with his antiwar activism during that period. On April 12, 1971, Kerry told the U.S. Congress that American soldiers claimed to him that they had, "raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned on the power, cut off limbs, blew up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in a fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan."
.
The exact sources of that assertion should be tracked down. Kerry also ought to be asked who, exactly, told him any such thing, and what it was, exactly, that they said they did in Vietnam. Statutes of limitation now protect these individuals from prosecution for any such admissions. Or did Senator Kerry merely hear allegations of that sort as hearsay bandied about by members of antiwar groups (much of which has since been discredited)?
.
To me, this assertion sounds exactly like the disinformation line that the Soviets were sowing worldwide throughout the Vietnam era. KGB priority number one at that time was to damage American power, judgment, and credibility. One of its favorite tools was the fabrication of such evidence as photographs and "news reports" about invented American war atrocities.
These tales were purveyed in KGB-operated magazines that would then flack them to reputable news organizations. Often enough, they would be picked up. News organizations are notoriously sloppy about verifying their sources. All in all, it was amazingly easy for Soviet-bloc spy organizations to fake many such reports and spread them around the free world.
.
As a spy chief and a general in the former Soviet satellite of Romania, I produced the very same vitriol Kerry repeated to the U.S. Congress almost word for word and planted it in leftist movements throughout Europe. KGB chairman Yuri Andropov managed our anti-Vietnam War operation. He often bragged about having damaged the U.S. foreign-policy consensus, poisoned domestic debate in the U.S., and built a credibility gap between America and European public opinion through our disinformation operations. Vietnam was, he once told me, "our most significant success."
.
The KGB organized a vitriolic conference in Stockholm to condemn America's aggression, on March 8, 1965, as the first American troops arrived in South Vietnam.
.
On Andropov's orders, one of the KGB's paid agents, Romesh Chandra, the chairman of the KGB-financed World Peace Council, created the Stockholm Conference on Vietnam as a permanent international organization to aid or to conduct operations to help Americans dodge the draft or defect, to demoralize its army with anti-American propaganda, to conduct protests, demonstrations, and boycotts, and to sanction anyone connected with the war.
It was staffed by Soviet-bloc undercover intelligence officers and received about $15 million annually from the Communist Party's international department --on top of the WPC's $50 million a year, all delivered in laundered cash dollars.
Both groups had Soviet-style secretariats to manage their general activities, Soviet-style working committees to conduct their day-to-day operations, and Soviet-style bureaucratic paperwork.
.
The quote from Senator Kerry is unmistakable Soviet-style sloganeering from this period. I believe it is very like a direct quote from one of these organizations' propaganda sheets.
.
The KGB campaign to assault the U.S. and Europe by means of disinformation was more than just a few Cold War dirty tricks. The whole foreign policy of the Soviet-bloc states, indeed its whole economic and military might, revolved around the larger Soviet objective of destroying America from within through the use of lies. The Soviets saw disinformation as a vital tool in the dialectical advance of world Communism.
.
The Stockholm conference held annual international meetings up to 1972. In its five years of existence it created thousands of "documentary" materials printed in all the major Western languages describing the "abominable crimes" committed by American soldiers against civilians in Vietnam, along with counterfeited pictures. All these materials were manufactured by the KGB's disinformation department. I would print up these materials in hundreds of thousands of copies each.
.
The Romanian DIE (Ceausescu's secret police) was tasked to distribute these KGB-concocted "incriminating documents" all over Western Europe. And ordinary people often bought it hook, line, and sinker. "Even Attila the Hun looks like an angel when compared to these Americans," a West German businessman reprovingly told me after reading one such report.
.
The Italian, Greek, and Spanish Communist parties serviced by Bucharest were much affected by this material and their activists regularly distributed translations. They also handed them out to the participants at anti-American demonstrations around the world.
.
Many "Ban-the-Bomb" and anti-nuclear movements were KGB-funded operations, too. I can no longer look at a petition for world peace or other supposedly noble cause, particularly of the anti-American variety, without thinking to myself, "KGB."
.
In 1978, when I broke with Communism, my DIE was propagating the line that Washington's adventure in Vietnam had wasted over $200 trillion. This waste, we warned darkly, would soon generate European inflation, recession, and unemployment.
.
As far as I'm concerned, the KGB gave birth to the antiwar movement in America. In 1976, Andropov gave my own Romanian DIE credit for helping his KGB do so.
.
Leftist intellectuals in America now look to Europe -- steeped for years in anti-American propaganda from the Soviet Union -- for "a sane and frank European criticism of the Bush administration's war policy."
.
Indeed, anti-Americanism in Europe today is almost as ferocious as it was during Vietnam. France and Germany insist we are torturing the al Qaeda prisoners held at Guantanamo Base. The Mirror, a British newspaper, is confident that President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair were "killing innocents in Afghanistan." The Paris daily Le Monde put Jean Baudrillard on its front page asserting that "the Judeo-Christian West, led by America, not only provoked the [September 11] terrorist attacks, it actually desired them."
.
In June 2002, a documentary film on "U.S. war crimes" in Afghanistan was shown in the German Bundestag by the crypto-Communist Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS). The film faithfully reincarnated the style of old Soviet-bloc "documentaries" demonizing the U.S. war in Vietnam. According to this 20-minute movie, American soldiers were involved in the torture and murder of some 3,000 Taliban prisoners in the region of Mazar-e-Sharif. One witness in the film even claimed he had seen an American soldier break the neck of one Afghan prisoner and pour acid on others.
.
During my last meeting with Andropov, he said, wisely, "now all we have to do is to keep the Vietnam-era anti-Americanism alive." Andropov was a shrewd judge of human nature. He understood that in the end our original involvement would be forgotten, and our insinuations would take on a life of their own. He knew well that it was just the way human nature worked.

But contrary to what Matter Eater Man would like to believe in his delusional world of Bush-hating/military-hating/America-hating liberalism, National Guard service is not "draft dodging", it is military service.

And now a little equal time for John Kerry's Vietnam military service, and the way he has undermined our military and intelligence for the 35 years since then:

Is John Kerry the New Democrat Golden Boy?
.
Part One
.
by Barbara Stock
Friday, January 23, 2004.
.
The good citizens of Iowa handed Richard Gephardt a shocking loss, and they put the oft-times raging Howard Dean into a nearly hysterical state. Iowa also presented Senator John Kerry with a huge surprise win. Kerry left Iowa for New Hampshire as the odds-on favorite to win the Democrat nomination.
.
Senator Kerry often speaks of his war record and his military service during the Vietnam war. No one doubts that he served and by most accounts, served well. Kerry was also awarded the distinctive honor of a Silver Star. But some questions linger.
.
The Silver Star is awarded to those who have exhibited ''gallantry in action'' while in combat with an enemy of the United States.
.
It's true that Lieutenant (j.g.) Kerry was in combat. Indeed, his boat had been fired upon by the enemy. Kerry beached his boat and an enemy soldier broke and ran. Tom Belodeau, one of the boat's gunners, admitted this enemy soldier was wounded in the attack. Lt. Kerry then chased the wounded man behind a ''hootch'' where he ''finished him off.'' It was for this action that he was awarded the prestigious Silver Star.
.
There were some who felt this act was not deserving of such an honor. Dan Carr, a Marine who served 14 months in Vietnam, questioned whether such an honor should have been bestowed on a man who killed a retreating and wounded enemy soldier.
.
When young Kerry returned to the States, he began protesting against the Vietnam War. On April 23, 1971, Kerry testified before Congress about atrocities he had allegedly seen and heard about. He testified that American soldiers ''raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, [had] blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam.'' He stated there never was a communist threat in Vietnam.
.
He joined a group called ''Vietnam Vets against the War.'' This group eventually abandoned him because the members realized that he was using their cause as a platform for his own personal gain. He was making it appear as though American soldiers were out-of-control animals, rampaging across Vietnam torturing and killing for sport. This was not their message. They were protesting the war. They weren't accusing their fellow soldiers of being murderers and rapists. They had not seen any of the behavior Kerry stated he witnessed. One member remarked that Kerry seemed to be making it up to give people what they wanted to hear.
.
Recently, Senator Kerry gave a speech at a Vietnam War Memorial, and many of the veterans turned their backs to him and walked away. They saw him as the man who called them war criminals in his testimony before Congress. The man who received the Silver Star for killing a wounded, retreating enemy soldier, had accused them of hideous war crimes.
.
Michael Benge, a Viet Nam POW from 1968 to 1973, wants Americans to know that it was Kerry who blocked ''The Vietnam Human Rights Act.'' (HR-2833) Benge believes that action gave Hanoi the green light to ignore violations of human rights with the blessing of the United States.
.
Senator Kerry can often be heard making the statement that the Bush Administration is controlled solely by ''special interests.'' Of course, he is untouched by this disease that he says permeates the Republican Party.
.
The senator was the head of the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs in 1992. He pushed vigorously to normalize relations with Vietnam. He visited Vietnam and praised them for being open and reported he was convinced they were not holding American POWs. Many families didn't believe him then and don't believe him now. But why would he be so anxious to normalize relations with the former enemy?
.
The answer is special interests and money. Collier's International, based in Boston, was immediately awarded the exclusive contract to rebuild Vietnam's infrastructure by the Vietnamese government. They made tens of millions of dollars from the contract. The chief executive officer of Collier's International was a man named C. Stewart Forbes. Interestingly, Senator Kerry's middle name is Forbes. There is a reason for that. C. Stewart Forbes is John Kerry's cousin.
.
The New Yorker Magazine touted Kerry as the senator who defeated the ''mendacious POW lobby.'' Yes, Kerry helped defeat those tenacious family members who wanted to know what happened to their missing loved ones. His strange bedfellow in this battle against POW families was none other than fellow Senator and former POW John McCain.
.
This committee's final report in 1993 was chilling. It determined that American POWs were left alive in Viet Nam after the war but felt none were still alive. It makes no attempt to identify those left behind, how they died, who killed them, and where their remains are located. They were abandoned in life and death.
.
Is Senator Kerry in full support of our intelligence gathering capabilities? His voting record indicates he is not.
.
In 1994/95, Kerry proposed a bill to gut $1.5 billion from intelligence and freeze spending for two major intelligence programs--the National Foreign Intelligence Program and Tactical Intelligence Program. (S. 1826) The bill did not make it to a vote, but the language was retooled, the amount dropped to $1 billion, and it was finally defeated as S. Amendment 1452 to H.R. 3759. (S. 1826, Introduced 2/3/94)
.
He voted to cut 80 million from the FBI budget. (HR-2076)
.
In 1997, Kerry felt there that were no threats to the United States. This prompted him to place this statement in the Congressional Record: ''Now that the [Cold War] struggle is over, why is it that our vast intelligence apparatus continues to grow even as Government resources for new and essential priorities fall far short of what is necessary?'' (Congressional Record, 5/1/97, p. S3891)
.
Twelve days after 9/11, Senator Kerry had the nerve to make this statement: "And the tragedy is, at the moment, that the single most important weapon for the United States of America is intelligence. We are weakest, frankly, in that particular area. So it's going to take us time to be able to build up here to do this properly." (CBS's Face the Nation, 9/23/01)
.
After spending years trying to lay waste to our intelligence capabilities, succeeding at times, and failing at times, he now preaches about how our intelligence community was negligent.

Is John Kerry the New Democrat Golden Boy?
Part Two: His Military Voting Record

.
by Barbara Stock
Sunday, February 01, 2004
.
John Kerry stated that in his first 100 days in office he would increase the military by 40,000 troops. "In the face of grave challenges, our armed forces are spread too thin." This is pompous talk from a man running for president and running from his voting record.
.
Kerry's desire to deplete the military is a long one. One has to go all the way back to 1972 to find his first plan to take funding from the military and redistribute it to social programs.
In his failed race for the Congress, his speeches centered on a simple theme--he promised to vote against all military appropriations.
.
In an interview with Harvard's Crimson he stated that he would "almost eliminate CIA activity and have U.S. troops dispersed throughout the world only at the directive of the United Nations."
.
Kerry indicated that he felt the war on terror was more a legal problem than a military one. Did convicting some of those who were responsible stop any of the terror attacks leading up to 9/11?
"I think there has been an exaggeration," Mr. Kerry said when asked whether President Bush has overstated the threat of terrorism. "They are misleading all Americans in a profound way." Apparently the vision of those jets crashing into the Twin Towers was not imprinted on Senator's Kerry's mind as it was for most Americans. That attack was not just a crime; it was an act of war.
.
In the 1980's, the Associated Press reported that Kerry sat on the board of the radical liberal group "Jobs with Peace Campaign," whose main objective was to "develop public support for cutting the defense budget."
.
Senator Kerry voted to reduce the defense spending levels for weapon projects by $8.8 billion in fiscal 1993. (Senate Congressional Resolution 106)
.
When questioned on defense funding, he said: "I have voted for almost all weapon systems that we have today with few exceptions. Unfortunately, these are people who've never met a system they didn't like. I have." Kerry voted against the B-1 bomber, B-2 stealth bomber, the Apache helicopter, Patriot missile system, the F-15, F-14A, F-14D jets, the AV-8B Harrier jet, and the Trident missile system. He also said he would make sure there were cutbacks to the M1 Abrams tank, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, the Tomahawk cruise missile, and the F-16 jet.
If these are the "unimportant" items he voted against, what on earth were the important ones he did vote for?
Even non-military-minded folks easily recognize most of these vital pieces of American technology that helped us to win the Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom with swiftness that shocked the world. It's unimaginable that our armed forces wouldn't have these weapons and weapon systems at their disposal. What new weapons would President Kerry block?
.
The senator believes innovative weapons only encourage other countries to come up with their own. Does he believe our enemies will be idle just because we do nothing? It is typical liberal thinking that if we disarm so will the enemy.
.
Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, added an amendment to the Fiscal 1996 Budget Resolution that would freeze defense spending for seven years and transfer the $34.8 billion in savings to education and job training. Kerry Voted Yea (Senate Congressional Resolution 13, CQ Vote #181: Rejected 28-71) If that amendment had passed in 1996, what condition would our military have been in by 2001?
.
The Senator introduced a bill to slash Department of Defense funding by $6.5 billion. Kerry's draconian bill had no co-sponsors and never came to a floor vote. (Senate 1580, Introduced 2/29/96)
.
An amendment introduced by Harkin and supported by Kerry was to Senate Bill 2057: National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1999.
.
This amendment would have transferred $329 million from the Department of Defense to the Veterans Affairs Department for veteran's health care programs. The transfer would be conducted by the secretary of defense in a manner which ''causes the least significant harm'' to military readiness and to the quality of life of military personnel. While it is imperative to take care of our veterans, making those presently wearing the uniform suffer is not the answer. Many in uniform were already struggling and on food stamps. Taking more from them would have been criminal. The Harkin amendment was defeated.
.
John Kerry ignored the growing threat to this country. We had had several terrorist attacks including the first attack on the WTC in 1993, but with blinders on, Kerry had one vision-weaken the military, cut the CIA, and use the money for his ever-growing social giveaway programs. His total ignorance of what America would need for defense in the new century is shocking. Kerry had twice placed in the Congressional Record that America had no enemies or threats to her security. Did he ignore the threats or was it that he just didn't care?
.
As an interesting sideline, Kerry referred twice to the downing of TWA Flight 800 as a terrorist attack. In light of such statements, one has to wonder why he continued his hack-and-slash policies of the very forces that would be called upon to protect us from such attacks.
.
Kerry wants us to ignore that if he had been successful in his quest, we could very well be in an all out war on American soil. Had we followed his vision, our soldiers would not have the high-tech equipment they have and use so effectively. If bills Senator Kerry supported had passed, our military readiness would be nonexistent. Had John Kerry been in charge, our soldiers would be under U.N. control.
.
Kerry wants us to remember that he served in Viet Nam and won a Silver Star, although he wants us to forget that he came home and called his fellow soldiers war criminals. He later admitted that he never saw any of the atrocities he testified to in front of Congress. The basis of his testimony--the Jane Fonda sponsored ''Detroit Winter Soldier'' event--has long been questioned and some say many of the ''veterans'' who testified at that event, were not veterans at all. Many Viet Nam vets were outraged at being described as vicious animals.
.
Kerry can't say his words were twisted or taken out of context. These votes and comments are well documented and demonstrate that John Kerry's newfound love and support of the military is strictly political, phony, and false. He still doesn't see the terrorist threat to this country. On the basis of that alone, Senator Kerry as President Kerry would be a threat to this country.
