Too bad that you're going to have to spend hundreds of dollars to upgrade it in order to play the next big game in six months.

Right now, I'm confined to PC as well. Other people were retarded enough to bring their gaming systems. Good luck being able pack those things securely, fuckheads.

All the stuff I've been playing on my laptop is 10-20 years old. I'm fairly content with playing all the older RPGs and scrollers in my spare time.

Yeah. I'd be all for PC gaming if not for the fact that the bar is constantly being raised in terms of hardware and performance, and so there's a definite sense of "the grass is always greener on the other side", though it could be argued that the "green" in question is all the money NOT spent upgrading. And while I'm not saying you NEED to constantly upgrade, it doesn't take long before things like visuals and scalability eclipse what your system can handle and performance suffers.

South Park: the stick of truth. It's fucking hilarious and not a bad game either. I watched the 3 episode tie in before playing and I love all the background stuff from old episodes. plus, all of Canada feels like an 8 bit NES Final Fantasy throw back. Good memories! In almost 8 years of marriage this is the only game that I have played where my wife says "don't turn it off, I want to watch you play"

Lego Marvel Heroes.

They went overboard with the puzzles in this one. Each chapter is like 80% puzzles, 15% moving from one place to the next, and 5% combat. It's a shame, it's got a nice engine driving the combat - even better than the Ultimate Alliance games. Large guys like Hulk (who can transform into Bruce or Hulk anytime you want) control and fight like a large guy, Iron Man controls better than he did in any of his past games (the flight and repulsor blasts feel natural while looking as cool as it did in the movies), Captain America and Spider-Man's melee attacks look hella cool even if you can't unsee the lego legs, etc.

I would have played this more if they focused on the fighting and minimized the amount of puzzle solving and character switching (the puzzles are as easy as connect the dots, but the number and frequency in which they are shoved into your face is too much). Hell, it would have been a better game if they just made a Marvel Heroes game using the engine and took out all the Lego parts.

sorry, I was busy. to satisfy the thread title, I'm currently playing FTL. but since PCG felt like extending the discussion for some reason, that's cool too.

staying ahead of the curve is actually pretty easy. graphics performance actually doesn't scale disproportionately to system requirements. yeah, to play everything at maximum settings, you'd have to break the bank periodically. but that's well in excess of what you'd need to go toe-to-toe with either console. you forget I more or less build computers for a living. I can tell you exactly what you need to meet a particular spec, and to be honest you can scratch-build a machine that thoroughly outclasses either current-gen console for as little as $550.

or upgrade an existing one (provided it's less than six years old) to beat either platform for $250. it doesn't take much, honestly. we carry a desktop-socketed iteration of the exact APU used in both consoles, and you can buy it for sixty bucks, which is fucking chump change to pc builders. yeah, you're paying more this way, but to do what? gaming platform? home entertainment center? office machine? media server? all of those at once? anything a console can do, even a midmarket scratch-build can do better.

oh, and when I'm not playing games? (which is most of the time since I fucking live at work and when I'm home I have a two-year-old I prefer to spend my time with.) I can edit audio, edit video, upload either, work on music shit, prep for my podcast, talk shit on here, and about a dozen other things - four or five at a time if I want - that no current console can competently do. and I didn't have to buy another machine to do it. so please, resident expert pcg, tell me more about what a bad investment pc gaming is compared to consoles.

the PC platform gets a bad rap because when you say PC gaming, people almost always think of the enthusiast market, which is a very small market (they're very loud on the Internet, though.) There are a lot of people who game perfectly fine on midrange/budget builds. These days there are even people who are doing well without a discrete videocard (AMD's APUs have already made most mid-range and all low-end videocards somewhat unnecessary, and Intel's offerings have already improved by leaps and bounds.)

the problem is that as you mentioned it's a very vocal minority. I would say that a majority of PC gamers are actually not significantly above mainstream specs except for having midmarket GPUs and maybe an improved CPU or more RAM (not that those two things really impact gaming performance all that much). the console manufacturers are gonna be very quick to point out the neckbeards building $3000 rigs because it helps them play up the 'cost-effectiveness' of their own platforms. I'm lucky because I can obtain components more easily and cheaply than the average consumer, but even adjusting for that, my current system (into which I've sunk maybe $500 by this point) would only cost about $900 for most people, and it exceeds requirements (and even recommendations) for all current-gen games by a significant margin. except crysis 3. which isn't a game so much as a GPU benchmark that lets you shoot things.

Look. I'm not discrediting PC games. In fact, I favor PC for a handful of things. My point is, I can't see a compelling argument to call either side, PC or console, "superior."

Both platforms have aspects to them that make them superior and aspects that make them inferior. It's basically subject to preference at this point.

I just butted in on the misconception that PC gaming requires thousands of dollars of investment. I have a mid-range gaming PC built for 12,000php. A brand new slim PS3 in here costs 13-15,000 php. A PS4? 27,000php. Which one is the more expensive platform now?

The PC Master Race thing shouldn't be taken seriously. It's been going on for a long time that it's basically an in-joke. Add the fact that many consoles in the last couple of gen are basically just PCs with standardized specs.

I had a much milder response typed out, and then I remembered it was pcg. giving you shit is immensely cathartic for me and also functions as message-board crate training for you. I'm a generous guy. if it helps, this is rob's fucking boards. we eat our own as appetizers.

more or less. the vocal minority of neckbeards have collectively become such a memorable character that it's really hard to participate in nerd culture nowadays without slipping into that character to some extent. sort of a grey area in between self-deprecation and a kind of perverse pride.

I just bought the Zone of the Enders HD Collection for PS3.

I can't actually play it since I don't have my PS3 with me, but It's going back home where I'll play it some time next year....Although, admittedly, it's more for completing a collection than it is for playing.

I've been having a lot of fun with this. I pretty much expected GTA with a hacking gimmick on top, which it pretty much is. I do like the added ability to use stealth and solve problems without even having to go into a building sometimes. Using the traffic hacks to catch pursuers (cops, bad guys) in a trap is pretty fun too. Having it where other players can jump into your game and try and steal from you and vice versa was an unexpectedly fun add-on too. It might wear off after a while, but it's enjoyable as hell right now.

Never played Sleeping Dogs past the first mission, so I couldn't say. Ubisoft's UPlay has been fucked up today, so there's been a lot less of the game invading going on.

Bought Watchdogs and the Dishonored GOTY edition. Only for a blown transformer to fuck up my TV that day. Waiting on a damage claim from the electric co.

Best way I have heard it described is GTA mixed with Assassins creed.
I love it. Like many other free roam games, I am spending more time doing side missions than actually doing the storyline.
Only just finished Act 1 today because of this.
Also, as I got the Dedsec version, I have a few extra DLC to play through as well.

I just started the second Act today. I've got all the towers and a bunch of the side quests. I'm at level 26 and have almost all my hacks topped out. No need to get the last money hack as I've got $700,000 in cash and all the 5 star weapons, which I hardly ever use. I like the stealth aspect, which gives it more than GTA offers. Though GTA has the music thing worked out better. I hate the fact that the music starts new every time you get in and out of the car. A minor quibble for a great game.

There's only a few that I like (the Iggy Pop & the Stooges remix, Curtis Mayfield, and Alice Cooper). It's still a shitty system either way, though.

When I saw the Alice Cooper song I was like, wtf? I mean its a great song, but what a strange choice. Its not exactly one of his big songs, and is from one of the Alice albums that tends to get ignored somewhat in the modern era (all people seem to go on about is the 70s stuff as being "cool"). Hey stoopid is one of my top Coop albums.

Completed the QR code missions last night, and really should start getting cracking with Act 2.

I'd be doing more of the online stuff if UPlay didn't suck so bad. The first day or so I was connecting pretty quickly to the online missions. Now it just sits and tries to load while not letting me do anything but drive around aimlessly most of the time.

meh. I just know that the 3 Ubi games I recall off-hand having played a decent bit online (SC:Blacklist, Future Soldier and FarCry 3) all exhibited that aggravating quality...
Well. That, and they short-dicked splitscreen players.

You have a short dick, so shut up.
Never had a problem with SC Blacklist online or FC3, ditto for Assassins Creed. Only game that has given me any degree of annoyance with host migration in the last couple of years is NFS Rivals, and thats EA, anything else is minor by comparison.

A character in Act 2 finishes up that subplot. I also finished the serial killer and burner phone investigation series as well and opened up the human trafficking. Still having a lot of fun and only about half way through Act 2.

the weapons one and the serial killer one both happen at certain points in the game, but you can do all the ground work early in the game (the only stuff its tough to see on the map is the stuff in Pawnee as the ctos station isnt available until later in the game.
I completed the game a few days ago, and just have a few drinking games to do etc, and play some more online matches.
Problem is, I spent so long doing all the side missions early on, that Acts 2-5 all moved pretty quickly. Pretty awesome game all in all.

I'm starting to notice that as I burned through the end of ACT 2 pretty quick and now through most of 3. There are several points where you want to keep going with the main story because each campaign interlocks so well with the next.
I've pretty much gotten sick of the stopping crime bit. I'm topped out on being the citizen's fav. I only do the missions now if I need a bit of a boost after a big chase or something. Sometimes I run over people. Oddly, it's usually the cops' fault for ramming me into them.
I've also perfected my convoy stops too. One IED in the front for the lead car. One in the back for the rear car. Blow them up and then run up and knock down the target.
I'm more in the groove of playing the mini games.
