Where did you get the 'past human genetic engineering gone wrong' bit? Have you not seen the original 'Alien' movie? The ship they found was obviously alien in origin.

The original creative team (Scott, O'Bannon, etc.) have long dropped hints that the aliens are genetically engineered weapons and that the ship with the egg chamber in the first one was a crashed deployment ship.
I thought you meant the ship from the first one was really an old human ship where the "aliens" were genetically engineered weapons created by humans.
Now if you're saying the aliens in Aliens were genetically engineered weapons created by other ancient aliens then I get what you're saying now.
