Pelosi and Schumer were speaking for the cameras and their base, they weren't even trying to negotiate. And when they realized they were looking like obstructionist fools, they begged Trump to make the meeting private without the cameras, so they could stop damaging themselves on camera.
Schumer in 2009 (along with many other Democrats) was saying we "can't treat these people the same way we treat legal immigrants", that we can't allow them to come in, we have to secure our borders. Now Schumer and Pelosi support sanctuary cities. If you support sanctuary cities, you can't even pretend you want to secure the border. It's one or the other.
It went so well for Trump that afterwards he reportedly stormed off and threw a tantrum. Making a demand like Trump did with the threat off shutting the government down if his demand wasn't meant is in no way "negotiating. It's what a terrorist does.
