Yeah that was a biggie change that didn't make the character better. Part of Clark's heroics is that he had to pretend that he was weaker to protect his id. The Superboy deal I tend to blame on editorial though. The pocket universe thing was lame but it would have covered past Legion stories. From what I understand after they did the pocket universe story they than retconned that so Superboy was just around for that story.
