 Quote:

hippie or hip·py

noun

1. a person, especially of the late 1960s, who rejected established institutions and values and sought spontaneity, direct personal relations expressing love, and expanded consciousness, often expressed externally in the wearing of casual, folksy clothing and of beads, headbands, used garments, etc.

That... sounds like it was written by a hippie. It vaguely defines the movement with a few surface images, without really telling you what it truly is.

Origin of hippie

An Americanism dating back to 1950–55; hip4 + -ie

Somehow it never occurred to me that hippie evolved from the word hip. Which again is an outgrowth of the 1950's beatnik / hipster movement.
