If I'm stuck with the choice between: - (a) an evangelical Christian whom I disagree with on abortion and gay marriage but who generally shares my views on taxes, the military, government regulation of business, gun control, judicial appointments, etc.; or
(b) someone who threatens to raise taxes, turn our military over the UN, socialize vast sectors of the gross national product and appoint ACLU attorneys to the Supreme Court and is either:(i) a haughty, French-looking Kennedy protege; or (ii) an environmental wacko with a messiah complex who thinks he invented the internet;
I'm going to vote with the evangelical.

That's true. And I try to differentiate between legitimately criticizing this administration (even I do that) and stuff like: (a) blanket statements like "God DAMN America"; (b) blowing up shit; (c) stupid shit like saying we're no better than Nazi Germany; (d) people who do nothing BUT justify anti-American behavior.
At the same time, however, I wish some people could differentiate in the opposite direction and realize that not all dissent is patriotic, either.
You'd be better served by recognizing that support for the government's actions isn't automatically "patriotic," either. In fact, sometimes opposing your government is the only patriotic option available. Too many knee-jerk jingoists scream "Support the troops!" as though it were an actual reasoned response to the mission they've been sent on. And they call themselves patriotic, when they're actually just dull-witted sheep.

Couldn't it be said that the liberals hate the conservative vision of america and vice versa while not actually hating the nation itself? That's about it. I would argue some (alot?) of it is from politicians exploiting issues where there is very little middle ground & spotlighting those. So kitchen table concerns most Americans really worry about end up getting lost.

Because isn't that what America is supposed to be about? Celebrating your differences no matter what they may be? The great smelting pot? Cultural, religious and political differences alike? I think that it would be easier to point "un-patriotic" behavior here in Denmark for instance. We're not a multicultural nation (although that could be rather cool) So there's various political and cultural behavior that just doesn't fit in. It's perfectly legal alright, just not in the "spirit" of our nation.
