This is NOT a debate over what the BEST albums are, it's a matter of OPINION as to what we Each feel is TEN albums people might like to hear.
A debate would be like polite arguing. Taste in music is an opinion. We are sharing opinions. There are NO Music Police here, and if one does NOT like some of the music/ albums/songs listed in here, one does NOT have to listen to them nor do they have to criticise what others like. I would never put down what someone listens to, partly due to tact and partly because, at 45, I listen to a wide variety of sounds.

I really like the feel of Birds of Fire.....its more erractic. You're in a storm one momment than all is well and you're on a beach in Florida.
Plus, I think their best songs are Birds of Fire, Miles Beyond, and Open Country Joy and all of those songs are on the Birds of Fire album.

I like Birds of Fire very much!
And if you like them, you might also enjoy the music of Jean Luc Ponty.
Another few groups I forgot to mention :
Fairport Convention The Move - ( Specially Love Shazam! )
Nirvana The Rolling Stones Everclear
The Moody Blues ( First seven albums were excellent, IMO. )
The Soundtrack to the movie, " Oh Brother, Where art thou? " I like that one a lot.
Other albums I enjoy :
The Moody Blues - To our Childrens' Childrens' Children.
Echoes - Best Of Pink Floyd.
Renaissance - Turn of the Cards
A LOT of Van Morrison's stuff.
Metallica - Load.
Genesis - a Trick of the Tail.
The Yardbirds - Rhythm & Blues
James Taylor - The Best of
Bob Dylan - Blood on the tracks, Highway 61 Revisited.
Dr John - The Very best of.
48 Classic Blues Tracks - 3 Cd Box Set - Classic Blues
When I mentioned The Who - Sellout - In my Top ten , I meant the Newer Cd, with TEN additional Bonus tracks, Including Early Cold Morning Taxi, Glittering Girl, Melancholia, Girl's Eyes, Hall of the Mountain King.
The 10 extra tracks were from various recording sessions in 1967, and I really like the Tunes!!! This Cd is Like Odds and Sods - The Prequel. If you like The Who, I feel you'll enjoy this CD.
Happy Jack , also by The Who, is pretty cool too. That came out Early in 1967.
Maybe When I am not so tired ( It is 1:30 am here in Phila. ) I will start a thread asking what Your Top Ten Favorite Songs are.

Some GREAT choices there!!!
Love the FIRST Chicago Lp!!! Every song on it is great, and several hits came from it. I saw them in concert back in 1972.
They were at their PEAK then!!

Some time back I made up a set of "Best of Chicago" tapes, doing my favorites from their albums in sequence. The first 3 albums (all doubles) I narrowed down to one 45-minute tape side each! I THINK I improved on them by doing this... (And the same goes for George Harrison's ALL THINGS MUST PASS.)

Makes sense. I'd have to go with Dance of the Maya as their best.
On the Ponty mention. Listened to some of his stuff back in the mid-late 70's. Not a bad fiddler. But, I'm just a guitar freak at heart.
Cheers!

Couldn't agree more G-Man (on Dave Alvin) talk about overlooked American treasure. How is it possible that a talent like his isn't more well known. Same deal with the Blasters. Bet most folks don't even realize they were the bar band in Streets of Fire.
Cheers!

Heh, Heh. I spent most of Jr High trying to score chicks with the line "what's your name, who's your daddy?". Didn't work very well though, most of 'em seemed to think it was a serious question? Buncha damn Bobby Sherman fans!

Forgot To Add - Zombies Became Argent, led by Rod Argent.
Anyone like the Yardbirds????
On that Yardbirds' Greatest Hits CD, Rhythm& Blues,I mentioned the other day are the following songs :
1 ) For Your Love 2 ) Heartful of Soul 3 ) Evil Hearted You 4 ) Still I'm Sad 5 ) Shapes Of Things 6 ) Good morning Little Schoolgirl 7 ) Baby Whats' Wrong 8 ) You Can't Judge a Book by it's Cover 9 ) I'm a Man 10) Steeled Blues 11) I Ain't Done wrong 12) You're a Better Man Than I 13) My Girl Sloopy 14) The Train Kept a Rollin' 15) Jeff's Blues 16) Take It Easy Baby
Eric Clapton was lead guitar for the group for a year or two, until Jeff Beck replaced him, then Beck left and Jimmy Page replaced Beck.
Clapton would go on to be in Many bands: John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes. He jammed with Steve Winwood, George Harrison, Duane Allman, and MANY others.
He is Still known today as " Old Slowhand ", and has had numerous albums released. He is stil revered as one of Rocks' greatest guitarists and stil performs.
Jeff Beck formed The Jeff Beck Group. He had several solo albums out. He still plays.
Jimmy Page, of course, formed Led Zeppelin when the Yardbirds broke up in 1968. Many great Led Zep Albums to his Credit. I believe he and former Zep vocalist Robert Plant still perform together.
I have every Led Zeppelin album up to & including Physical Graffiti. Graffiti is my favorite effort by Led Zep. Lotta great Songs on that nearly 30 year album!
Love Cream and Blind faith. Steve Winwood was in Blind faith with Clapton. He played keyboards, and sang and played other instruments, too. Winwood went on to form the now Legendary group Traffic. He had played with The Spencer Davis Group at age 17, singing such hits as I'm a Man, Gimme Some Lovin', and more.
I have Several Yardbirds, Cream, And Traffic albums. This was the music on the air in the 1960's when I was a kid. I guess I stuck with it.
Other groups NOT to Forget:
Blood Sweat & Tears Buffalo Springfield ( FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH ) Ten Years After Dave Clark Five Gerry and the Pacemakers The Knicker Bockers ( LIES ) Lothar and the Hand People ( MACHINES ) Hot Tuna StrawBerry Alarm Clock Troggs ( WILD THING ) The Turtles Joy Division B - 52's Three Dog Night The Ventures ( WALK DON'T RUN ) Psychadelic Furs The Buckinghams ( KIND OF A DRAG )
God, I just LOVE music!!!

Because he isn't an eighteen year old tart or angry rapper and, therefore, doesn't get played on the radio.
He did, however, win a Grammy for his "public domain" album. Which is nice.

Singing "One Bad Stud." Loved that song. Actually an old Leiber and Stoller tune.
Funny you should mention Streets of Fire. I was telling my wife about that movie the other day and explaining how the bar band in it was the Blasters.

Sorry, but when someone posted that they liked a certain Monkees album & someone else said that they felt another Monkees album was better,it became a debate! A debate doesnt have to be an argument,a debate is about differing points of view being expressed. By having two people explain why they prefer a certain album to eachother,it became a debate!
As I said, the lists are personal opinions & I cant understand why people are questioning other peoples choices!

I would boil it down to three words: He's too authentic.
It'll keep him off pop radio, and the modern-day country network won't touch it either.

1) I had the pleasure of seeing Rod Argent & Zombies singer Colin Blunstone on tour together late last year. Blunstone's voice is still fantastic, and he even sang Argent songs like they were written for him.
2) Love the Yardbirds. Some fantastic singles there.
3) Winwood actually formed Traffic before Blind Faith, and re-formed them after that group split. One of my all-time favorite bands, and if I didn't put John Barleycorn Must Die in my Top 10, I should have.

Yeah , you're probably both right. I quit listening to radio in the late 80's. Screw it. I prefer to decide what I like, rather than having the same song saturate me like sonme ad jingle.
G-Man, how is Public Domain? Does he try to stay with the original vibe of the tunes, or does he stamp his own style on them? I haven't picked it up yet. Of course I will eventually. BlackJack was the last solo album I picked up until this Live one. Also picked up the Touble Bound Blasters live/reunion disc. They seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves on it. Highly recommended if you haven't already got it.
You ever heard Phil's solo? County Fair 2000. It's a good disc too.

Anybody remember the WKRP IN CINCINNATI episode from the 4th season about Andy's old friend, the "radio doctor"? He'd sell his "service" to stations, wherein he'd program their shows for them. In effect, no more need for DJs, no more individuality-- just mindless employees playing what someone else tells them to, and stations all across the country, ALL playing the EXACT SAME SONGS no matter where you go.
That was around 1982. Sadly, it's gotten progressively WORSE every year since then! Someone I know described it as the "greedy old men" running the conglomerates, having finally "perfected their machine". What he meant was, the guys who run the big record labels want to OWN and CONTROL every aspect of the business-- the songwriting, the production, the distribution, the promotion. Songs do not become popular because listeners like them, ask for them and buy them-- listeners BUY things (often mindlessly folowing the pack) BECAUSE the ONLY thing they hear is the ONLY thing those "old guys" want to PUSH! And more and more often, it's "bands" (or really, "singing groups") that they have put together, trained, and packaged themselves. Shades of The Monkees. Shades of Motown. Shades of The Brill Building. Only FAR, FAR WORSE, and far more soulless than it EVER was in the old days.
When something like John Fogerty's BLUE MOON SWAMP gets a lot of airplay (like back in '97)-- it's really a shock these days.
All I know is, lately, about 99% of what I buy is stuff that gets NO airplay, NO promotion, and therefore is virtually unknown, unless you're the type to go to bar shows. But this stuff is so much better than almost EVERYTHING that does get pushed-- I'm enjoying new music more than I have since the early 70's!!!

It depends on the song, but in general its fairly traditional folk in its sound. On the other hand, Alvin is fairly traditional-folk on some of his "original" material (esp. the "King of California" and "Blackjack David" albums).
If I have a gripe about the album its that Alvin is such a strong songwriter its almost disappointing to hear him do songs he didn't write.

BlackJack was the last solo album I picked up until this Live one. Also picked up the Touble Bound Blasters live/reunion disc. They seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves on it. Highly recommended if you haven't already got it.
I didnt realize they'd put out a live reunion album. I'll have to pick that up to complete my collection.

Nope. I do have, on cassette someplace Phil's "Unsung stories" album from the mid to late eighties. Mostly blues covers and a few with "Sun_ra and his arkestra." The highlights of that album are his acoustic, near a cappella readings of "Brother can you spare a dime" and a variation on the folk song "O Death" that Ralph Stanley sang in "O Brother Where Art Thou"
Another one I'll have to pick up.

Listening to the Radio:
I rarely listen to the radio.
As already stated in here, I prefer to hear what I want to hear. 99.9999999999999 percent of the music I like is NOT played on the radio.
It has been about 30 years since the last time I heard FIELDS OF PEOPLE played by The Move or HEARTFUL OF SOUL by The Yardbirds played on the radio.
....And I have a good Cd/Cassette colection for that.

The Tortoise and Nurse With Wound stuff isn't exactly street, either.
But I have to say, that's one cool list.
