I just can´t seem to get into Stephen King´s books. He has this great idea for a horror story and gives the books a nice start... But then the middle part of the books arrive...and it´s usually 400plus pages of moronic word diahrea to fill out the book, and then the horrible endings, which usually sucks worse than rootbeer.
But to his credit, he did write one book I liked, Deadzone.
So why the topic? Well I promised a friend to give SK another chance, and I started to read Dreamcatcher, but it lacked soul, and this time the start of the book was booooooring to say the least. So sorry King, no more of your books for me.

I used to really be into Stephen King when I was in elementary and Junior High school. Around the 8th or 9th grade, I just lost interest, pretty much for exactly the same reasons you just mentioned.
Although I still have an interest in his Dark Tower series, I have yet to read the 4th book.
Another thing I always liked was his use of the recurring Randall Flagg.

He is overrated. He has interesting ideas, and occasionally he's adapted them well, but most of the time he goes off and loses any line of thought he started with.
He's written some good stuff, though.

I never got the big deal with King, either. Even if there was some intrigue I never could finish any of his books. Just bored the hell out of me.

Dreamcatcher was a bad movie. But I read Animal Semetary and The Green Mile and both were good.

I've read a few of Stephen King's books, prefer the non-fantasy horror ones. Loved Misery.

Read one of his books a while ago. Forget the name. Something about a horror author and a flock of birds or some shit. It was awful.

The Dark Half. One of my favorites of his in Jr. High. Also a horrible movie with Timothy Hutton.

But at least the company was good, right? RIGHT?
I think King excells with shorter fiction, like his novellas and short stories. What have the best movie adaptations of his work been? Stand By Me ("The Body"), Shawshank Redemption ("Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption"), and The Green Mile... all based on his shorter fiction.
I went through my King phase back in 8th and 9th grade. While I haven't read anything by him in years, these are the longer novels I liked way back then:
Dark Tower trilogy: The Gunslinger, Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands (and I haven't read the fourth book) The Stand It Misery Eyes of the Dragon

I think he's largely lost his touch with horror. And I think it started when he copped out on the real possibilities of Pet Sematery and went for a generic monster/slasher vibe.
But some of his non-genre work, like "Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption", has been great.

Those were good ones.Desperation was also a good one.
The fourth dark tower book was Wizard and Glass. Ilooked forward to it because it told the orgin of the Gunslinger. I tried to like it but I just couldn't. I would have been happy with a short 100 page orgin and than a continuation of the story. King can realy drag out a story to the point it realy sucks.

I loved IT right until all the kids fucked each other. That was just plain weird.

I really enjoyed his earlier work. I always thought The Dead Zone was a good starting point for someone new to his work.
The past few years I have been disappointed with his work. He has backed away from straight horror, with mixed results. I've yet to read From a Buick 8.
The last work of his I really liked was The Green Mile. That was excellent.
It was cool, but I do agree that the "orgy" was unnecessary.... and disturbing.
But I am sooooo psyched for the big finish to the Dark Tower. :) It's supposed to tie in with a number of previous works. That is, if he can pull it off without pissing me off.....
