I think In Utero blows Nevermind outta the water. It's the album they always wanted to make, in my opinion.

I like In Utero because it was obvious they didn't just want to make Nevermind 2.
But my favorite Nirvana disc is Unplugged.

Although I like Nirvana, to this day I detest what their noteriety did to the once vibrant and ecclectic Alternative/indie music scene in the U.S.
I suspect Cobain thought so as well.
Post Nirvana, same sounding "grunge" bands and ultimately metal bands once more reemerged only this time they got to wear the punkers 80's wardrobes and body adornments.

I've always said that the post-Nirvana "grunge"/"alternative" bands were the modern day equivilant of bands like Poison, Warrant, Cinderella, etc.

Those that were mentioned, as well as Creed, Days of The New, and I'll even throw Stone Temple Pilots on the fire too.

What irks the hell out of me is how the younger generation looks to Cobain and Nirvana like if they were somehow important.
I actually conversed with some dumbasses once who think Nirvana is the begining of alternative music and was actually revolutionary.
To this day I still hold more credence and respect to The Pixies (and of course The Ramones) than I ever will Nirvana in respects to being a groundbreaking U.S. punk/indie band.

I don't disagree with you in giving credit to those bands, and many others, but Nirvana came at a time when mainstream FM radio, and MTV (when the 'M' actually meant something) was pushing a shitload of bubblegum pop singers, rappers, and other forgettable one-hit wonders on the world. When Nirvana hit big, it was something amazing.
When was the last time an "alternative"/"punk" or "garage" band made such an impact on mainstream culture? I know it hasn't happened since.

It isn't just the younger generation. Nirvana were respected by their peers, not just the other early Seattle bands but also the likes of The Pixies and Sonic Youth.
And even many of the old-school rockers admired them. Tom Petty was a fan. So was, believe it or not, Ozzy Osbourne.

Yeah exactly. Hair metal was just dying out and there was nothing but bubblegum pop on pop radio. So along comes these guys on the ass end of punk rock but who have long hair and loud guitars (something for the metalheads to relate to) and lo and behold a phenom is born.
Of course that was going to have an impact. Suddenly you have an "in" for these guys who used to deride that scene as being about "weirdos" with funny hair and clothes.
I did see Nirvana actually. Once around 1990 opening for Sonic Youth and STP (pre Stone Temple Pilots) and once dring the In Utero concert in the L.A. Forum. The latter was the 1st time I felt like if I was in a metal concert. You had the drunk frat boys the ho's flashing their tits and the beach balls etc. etc. Cobain and Co. looked appropriately mortified and finally pissed. A few months later he was dead.

Any band that gets that popular that quickly is going to get bombarded by the drunk frat boy/flashing tit crowd.
I like Nirvana a lot, and their impact had a lot of bad side effects, like paving the way for the bands that I mentioned earlier, the close-minded jocks to latch onto something "cool". On the other hand it made people like me look to the bands like The Ramones and The Pixies to see what the influences were, and it allowed some other bands that never would have had a chance at any kind of success get a little gleam of sunshine.
The negative effects of Nirvana's impact on pop culture were loud and shiny, but I think the quiet positives far outnumber them.
