Ok, let's say that someone asks you to give them the name of the band that you think they should listen to the most. But only one. There are no multiple answers. You can site different bands as influences or being in the same genre, but by the end you need to clearly and unequivocally list the one band that you think they should listen to. For example: It's probably because I've been on an alternative country kick lately, but I happen to think that Uncle Tupelo is a great band with equally great music. As someone else online had said about their music, "One minute they'll have you rockin' out to their almost punk-like music to crying in your beer with their old school country songs." Other bands like Drivin' & Cryin' and Steve Earle come close, but I think Uncle Tupelo reached that ability far better than the others. Post break-up Son Volt was an awesome band as well, but didn't quite get as hardcore rocker as Tupelo did. They seemed to have mellowed with age I guess. The No Depression album is a great example of why Uncle Tupelo is one of the forerunners of the alt. coutnry circle. Songs like Graveyard Shift, Before I Break, and Factory Belt pound out some fast paced rock that makes you unprepared for the slower, quieter songs like Whiskey Bottle, Life Worth Livin', and Screen Door. So, what says you? And this is not going to be a debate on people's personal music preferences.

Toad The Wet Sprocket. I have been a fan of theirs for ten years and have never been bored of them. Glen Phillips is the lead singer and song writer. Their songs are almost never about love, which is one of the reasons why I like them so much. They broke up a couple years ago, but they just released a live album that you can purchase here.. All their albums are great, but Fear is probably my favorite one. Fisrt CD I ever bought and still one of my favorites.

Beck, because he just replaced my former #1, because he couldn't even limit his politics to on stage, but had to put them on his new album.
Oh and since Beck has a large catologue, so as long as you enjoy him, there's plenty to listen too before you start to get bored.

Jane's Addiction
That band were a muscle. Stephen Perkins’ octopus-armed drumming, Dave Navarro’s articulate guitar work and Perry Farrell’s life affirming lyrics all coming together to create something larger than the sum of its parts.
The first time I heard Jane's Addiction, it was like being shaken out of a stupor; it was like someone telling me basic human truths that deep down I'd known all along. I can't adequately put into words what songs such as Ocean Size and Ain't No Right meant to me.

Blur. Brit-pop/art-rockers with a sound that's been evolving over time.
Parklife and The Great Escape are great albums about the sadness of mundane suburban life.
13 is a wonderful album. The start of their experimental art-rock phase.
Think Tank, their most recent, is very art rock, with influences from Moroccan music and electronic stuff.
Blur Present The Special Collector's Edition is a nice import collection of b-sides and live performances.
Also, I want to be able to mention the band without having to follow it with "They did the 'Woo-Hoo' song. Remember?"

I wouldn't mind being on a deserted island with The Who as long as I wasn't a young boy, because I would hate to wake up every morning and have to wash the blood and semen off my ass in salt watter.
