I'm looking for some new bands to get into. I like good old-fashioned American rock n' roll. A friend of mine recommended Jet, Velvet Revolver, and The Killers. I thought Jet was Britrock? From what I've heard of their stuff I think I'd like it. I caught the tail end of a Velvet Revolver video on MTV a few months ago and it didn't impress me. But I'm willing to give it a try. And I've straight-up never heard of The Killers, so I could only take his word for it.

Anyone listen to any of these bands? Should I get them? And while we're on that, can anyone recommend some more "good old-fashioned American rock n' roll" bands?

Gratzi,

Killers. Good stuff. As is Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Fever To Tell". What kind of bands are you into? It makes recommendations a bit easier.

Jet is from Australia, actually. They had the uber-catchy single "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" that was featured in an iPod commercial, and sounds a bit like Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life." However, I've found more of Jet's other stuff to sound like AC/DC, rather than the proto-punk that inspired the modern "garage rock revivalists" like the Strokes.

Velvet Revolver is made of Scott Weiland, the heroin-plagued lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots, and former members of Guns n' Roses: guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Matt Sorum. If you don't like STP or Gn'R, I wouldn't bother with Velvet Revolver either.

If you like American rock 'n' roll, I'd recommend the Strokes, the White Stripes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Raveonettes (who are actually Danish, but heavily influenced by '50s and '60s rock). I don't know where the Shins are from, but they are terrific, and so are the New Pornographers from Canada... great "power pop." If you want to reach back further, you can't go wrong with Social Distortion for rootsy rockabilly-influenced punk rock Americana.

Velvet Revolver is good stuff, you'd have to get used to some of Scott's singing though. Slash rocks in that band. Too bad Axl missed out.

It may not be up to what you're looking for, but Soil is good too. I like them anyway.

I recommend The White Stripes and The Strokes. I've been wanting to give the Yeah Yeah Yeahs a try, their song Maps is awesome. I don't recommend Velvet Revolver. Right now I'm listening to The Arcade Fire and they're pretty fucking good, but they're a bit weird so I don't know if you like that kinda thing. Same with Modest Mouse.

Well, I'm into quite a few styles, primarily electro, rockabilly, surf rock, classic rock, shoegazer rock, alt-country, 80's Britpop and Top 40 (circa '87-'92).

Some of my favorite bands are (I'm just gonna list off my CD book):

Joy Electric, Fischerspooner, Ladytron, Felix da Housecat, Miss Kittin, Postal Service, Les Rhythms Digitales, Mouse on Mars, Add N to X, Kraftwerk, The Rentals, Future Bible Heroes, Air, Daft Punk, Particle, Starflyer 59, Bon Voyage, My Bloody Valentine, Havalina Rail Co., Reverend Horton Heat, Hank Williams 3, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, anything from Hepcat Records, Thee Spivies, Dick Dale & The Del-Tones, The Prayer Chain, Man... Or Astroman?, Ozomatli, The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, Monaco, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, St. Etienne, Portishead, Masssive Attack, Dubstar, Ivy, Lush, Spiritualized, Money Mark, Beastie Boys, Mix Master Mike, Invisible Skratch Picklez, u-Ziq, Beth Orton, P.M. Dawn, GnR, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkle, Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, AC/DC, Van Halen, Jefferson Airplane, Grand Funk Railroad, Three Dog Night, Iron Butterfly, and the soundtracks to The Crow and Desperado.

I also like "power pop" and "pop punk"... sorta like Blink 182, Green Day, MxPx, and a lot of those catchy, melodic emo bands... but I don't have any albums in that style.

I absolutely loathe x-rock (Slipknot, Godsmack, Linkin Park, and -- sorry, Wednesday -- Evanasence).

But I'm looking for something raw, garage-y, and funky, in a way. Stripped down booze-guzzlin' rock. Vocals, guitar, bass, and drums. Nothin' fancy. A lot of the classic southern rock songs had some funky rhythms and guitar riffs. Not funk Paliament-style, but just straight up catchy notes/Gospel/country-inspired riffs (Sweet Home Alabama, Joy To The World). And clear singing vocals. No scratchy howls or screams into the mic. Good old fashioned singing.

I downloaded a few Jet songs. I love them. I'm definitely going to purchase that album. They reminded me of a few good rock bands, too (AC/DC, Iggy Pop, Foreigner, and Deep Purple). I liked what I heard of Velvet Revolver, too, actually, altho it's not quite as "American good ol' rock n' roll" as the stuff I'm looking for.

Does this help?

I like them both as well. Especially the song Halo. Also like the Yeah Yeah Yeah's like others have suggested, my personal favorite by them is the song Countdown.

Velvet revolver is in my car right now. I've listened to it 5 or 6 times straight through and still going. Excellent album.

The White Stripes kinda fall into the category you're looking for, though Jack White's voice is kinda peculiar and their style can be too raw at times. White's voice is kinda like AC/DC's lead singer or Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin, and, like Plant, he can get soft too if a song demands it. And talk about stripped down: the whole band is Jack White in vocals and guitar and Meg White on drums (and occasionally vocals).

You might also like The Vines. They're australian, but they're very influenced by american garage rock from the early 90's. I liked them a lot when their first album first came out, but soon I got bored and I haven't even bothered with the second album (though I still like Get Free and Country Yard from the first album a lot).

There's also The Hives. I don't like them very much, but they remind me a lot of Iggy & The Stooges. Their song Hate To Say I Told You So is pretty good.

Ever tried The Pixies? Some of their stuff can be discouraging, but their albums Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are excellent and kinda like what you're looking for.

Based on your tastes, Nonoxy9, I'd suggest that you head over to Rue-Morgue.com and download Rue Morgue Radio. It's about 60-80 minutes of rockabilly, punk, hardcore, alt-rock, and all sorts of stuff with a decidedly Rue Morgue-y bent. They update monthly, so December should be out by now. Worth your time, fer sherr...

Jet Velvet Revolver sounds like a good name for something.

I just don't know what that something would be.
