I haven't seen "Layer Cake," but I did see Craig in "Road to Perdition."
Even if they die his hair black, I think it's a "meh" choice.

definitely meh......with Hugh Jackman, Dougray Scott, Orlando Bloom and Ewan McGregor all candidates they settled for the ugliest piece of shit they could find. Bond is supposed to be suave.

Looks and sex appeal are two separate things, though. He may not be typically good-looking, but he's definitely sexy. Kinda like Clive Ownes - not hansdome, but does he have sex appeal? Hell, yes.
Orlando Bloom and Dougray Scoot are too pretty boy. Hugh Jackman would've been another good choice, though.

I'm serious! Someone like Brad Pitt is considered handsome, but as far as I'm concerned he has the sex appeal of a Ken doll. Ed Harris isn't considered handsome by any strech, but gobdamn, he is sexy! That's the difference.

Clive Owen is the only actor on that list that might have revitalized my interest in Bond.
Though I really think what Bond needs is an A-list director, a James Cameron or Quentin T, to make the series interesting.
Unfortunately, unless and until the series gets pried out of the Broccoli family's hands, that probably won't happen.

A lot of people have been saying that since Owen starred in "Croupier" about ten years ago:

Never heard of Croupier. Truth be told, I wasn't really familiar with him until Closer.

No & No!
Keep the likes of Cameron & Tarantino away from Bond, they will try to make Bond into a CIA agent or something to Americanise Bond.
As for the Brocolis........after 33 years of success, why the hell should anyone else get the franchise?

Sometimes you need to look at things through fresh eyes. Sure the franchise still makes money, but adjusted for inflation, not like it used to.

Why must a series that is essentially British, have a Hollywood style director? A Hollywood style director would just turn it into a Hollywood style action movie. Nothing wrong with Hollywood action movies, but then Bond might as well be called XXX!
Point with the Brocolis is that Fleming was the guy who created Bond & the Brocolis were the ones he wanted to have the movie rights. Has the Bond franchise ever suffered under them? I dont think so. The fact is they have an understanding of Bond that would more than likely be lost if given to anyone else. If it aint broke, dont fix it!

I said an "A list" director, not a generic action director.
Martin Campbell is, let's be honest here, a B list action director who just happens to be British. Are you really telling me that you'd rather see a guy like him than, say, Cameron, Tarantino or Spielburg?
The first ten minutes of "True Lies" had more of a classic Bond feel than anything since "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"

Firstly,Tarantino as a director I could not give two shits about. Only films I have enjoyed that he has been involved in were not as director.
Spielberg films I like, but on James Bond.......no thanks!
As for the guy they have now,I have no idea who he is,and quite frankly,I could care less, but the fact he is British gives him a better understanding of a British character, just as I would think a Swedish director would understand a Swedish character better,an American director would understand an American character better & an Australian would understand an Australian character better.........thats just obvious!
Really though I would not mind an American director, just not a Hollywood blockbuster director as they would be too tempted to make it a Hollywood movie, thats the way they work!
By the same token, would Guy Richie be a good director for a new Terminator movie? I doubt it,but that doesnt mean he isnt good at what he does!

Hell, give Guy Ritchie a shot at Bond, I'd say. But you'll still have the problem of the Broccolis micromanaging the director

The only problem I would have with Guy Richie getting the job would be a class thing. His movies have a real street level, with his characters being lower class. I am not sure he would have as good a grasp on the upper class that Bond moves within.
Its entirely possible that he would be able to do something on that level, but as yet he has restricted himself to a certain genre (lets forget Swept away shall we).
I'd like to see him take a crack at something a bit different before taking on something as important as the Bond franchise (and yes,Bond is important to us Brits).

Bond overall sucks anyway you slice it. Pip-Squeak actor, Hollywood director--Dun' matter. In the end, it's just gonna be another long drawn out and boring token Bond flick.

Okay, guys, you're both on a bit of a wrong track here. First, Martin Campbell is from New Zeland. He's not British. Secondly, he's made very popular movies in the past decade including the Hollywood Mask of Zorro and it's upcoming sequel as well as Goldeneye, the best Brosnan Bond film. I also find it funny that Nowhereman doesn't want a XXX ( ) style Bond movie since the director, also from New Zeland, of Die Another Day also directed the last XXX ( ) movie with Ice Cube. As a matter of fact out of all of Brosnan's movies, only The World Is Not Enough was directed by a Brit.

And as I said before,I dont mind an American director, and by that token any nationality is fine, but I do not want Bond Hollywoodified (is that a word?).
As for XXX,that was just an example as the movie was billed as "The American version of James Bond".
It had elements of Bond, but was still aimed at the Hollywood action fans. What I,and most Brits, would not want is a Bond movie with elements of Bond, but was aimed at the Hollywood action fans.
I liked XXX,it was a good fun movie, and I like so many Hollywood action flicks, but Bond needs to stay away from that so plebs like Pariah wont be in the same movie theatre as me!

Am I the only one here who thought that Die Another Day started out as one of the best Bond movies ever and then fell apart about half way through because it became a Hollywood-style pointless action flick? I mean, not one good thing happened after Bond made contact with Jinx. Not one good thing. Every thing after that was cornier than a Roger Moore flick.
What really hurt Bond lately was the crappy dialogue Brosnan was given. It wasn't him. And then there was Denise Richards in The World Is Not Enough, who, for some of my friends, ruined the movie. Personally, I thought it was Brosnan's best.

I agree with you, but I'm willing to go one step further. The thing that hurts Bond, recently and otherwise, is that if you've seen one Bond movie you've seen them all. The crappy dialogue is the same. The sex is the same. The action is the same. The only thing that could save this new Bond movie is if they truly broke away from everything Bond and made an original movie out of it.
I don't think that's possible, but I'd like to be proven wrong.

Complete agreement about Die Another Day!
I LOVE GoldenEye, and aside from Richards, The World Is Not Enough was real good. The evil chick in both of them we awesome.
DAD started out sooooo good. I always thought the henchmen was pretty kick-ass looking. But Bond just sounded stupid and acted stupid. Who did not think that Miranda Frost was going to be evil? Come on, even I saw that coming a mile away.
And part of the problem is the Bond girls. Yeah, I said Bond girls. Not Bond women. Halle Berry overshadowed Brosnan. Richards didn't act like a scientist. Not that I encouraging sexist behavior, but Bond needs to go back to his old-school approach with women.
