Well, I realize you might not get too much news in Oregon. But Gavin Newsom is a great mayor. Unlike most politcians his focus is on more than one issue (and when he believes in something he does it, even at the risk of his core constinuency). In just the last year he's spearheaded homeless programs that focus on providing housing instead of just checks. He's shifted cops to the worst neighborhoods to cut down the crime rates. He's reduced the job security of every civil service employee so that they keep their job only if they do their job well. And his allowing gay marriages was based on what he felt was right, not politics (because it was risky and has brought him flack from all sides).

I also know that his own base which got him elected was alienated by the gay marriages. No one playing politics does that for the support of a minority group.
