Loved it.
I was surprised by the number of references/spoofs of American movies. I think I was the only one in the theatre who laughed at the line from Untouchables(yet, everybody laughed at the Spiderman line; bastards).

I like that not only was it hillarious, but the story was acctually really good and moving at points. My wife acctually teared up when he smaked down the loli-pop. And there were parts that were down right cool. There were a couple of tools sitting in front of us who clearly didn't get it. The only parts they laughed at were when the guy shot the girl in teh back and when they pissed on the kid (I don't think either scene was suposed to funny, except the dancing after they shot her.) Oh and when the leader of the Axe Gang was smoking opium the tool hollered, "Yea, peace pipe!"

I think the peeing part was supposed to be funny, when you consider some of the other jokes in it(like the cat being decapitated).
I laughed in more of a "wow that's terrible" kind of way, like the way you'd laugh at a racist or sexist joke.

SPOILERS (I guess)
Kinda hard to have sad points in a comedy, since people are less likely to take scenes seriously. I think that's what happened to a lot of people, including myself. I would have never laughed when that kid was peed on, if it hadn't been for the fact that his kung-fu failed with such hilarious result less than a minute before. I laughed in the "wow that's terrible" way Animalman described.
The cat being cut in half was either hilarious or horrible, depending on your point of view. I just thought the way they did it was beautiful, considering that it happened just after the cat (which was obviously well trained) jumped off at just the right moment, so the camera panned away just enough to not show the cat but show its shadow. Then again, we'd just seen some awesome martial arts on a beautiful background, so I was in the mood for aesthetics.
The dude smashing the lollipop was sad, but I can see why some people would laugh.

Saw it Friday night and loved it. It was a lot more fun than the pretty-but-pretentious Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and even better than Stephen Chow's previous film, the hilarious Shaolin Soccer. The "musicial" fight involving the killers and their harp was one of the most creative, imaginative fight sequences I had ever seen. It really cheered me up after a horrible week, and I highly recommend it to all. I wish there had been more dancing and/or musical numbers, but that's a minor nitpick. I have a few other concerns, but they didn't take away from my enjoyment of the movie. Minor spoilers follow:
Sing (who turned out to be the big hero) was a very unsympathetic character throughout the movie -- a wannabe gangster, a bully, and a coward. All it took for him was to get his ass kicked, and then not only did it unlock his body's potential to be a true master, but he had a complete change of heart and protected Landlord and Landlady against the gang he had once desired to join. This bothered me -- I guess I would like to see the unstoppable hero "earn" his powers, either through training (accomplished with a montage) or a superhero-like origin event. This also bothered me about The Matrix, where we had to accept on faith that Neo was "The One," and how he learned all his martial arts and skills from data being downloaded into his brain in a matter of seconds, rather than through practice and experience.
But what bothered me more was how mean Sing was to the beautiful mute girl, and he never apologized to her. A scene where he sought her out seeking forgiveness, or at least a scene where she defiantly stood up to him, maybe slapping him in the face, would have made for a more complete character arc. After that, I could have accepted them falling in love, or anything else. Sing was also mean to his fat friend all the time and eventually pushed him away, and it would have been nice to see him make amends for that, before the out-of-nowhere happy ending.
I was also a little surprised by Landlady's colossal character shift from unsympathetic emasculating bitch to concerned heroine. She forced the martial arts masters out of the neighborhood and was indirectly responsible for their deaths by not interceding, but all of a sudden she decided to stand up and fight after all. It would have been cool if she swung into action and had a change of heart a little bit sooner.
All that said, this was an awesome movie. Along with the martial arts/action fans who will probably see it anyway, I have to recommend it to anyone who likes Looney Tunes and other madcap, violent, zany cartoons of the '30s, '40s, and '50s.

I didn't really think there was much of a story, and I wasn't expecting one. To me, it was just pure fun. The comedic action elements were clever and inventive, as I've come to expect from Stephen Chow, but for the most part, it was only slightly less mindless than the typical kung fu action flick. And that was just fine.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. In my mind, it is beyond compare. I didn't consider it pretentious, just stylized.

I'm still gonna wait on this one until Starz shows it. I saw a lot of Kung-Fu this week... Fist of Legend, House of Flying Daggers, Shaolin Soccer, Ran, The Blind Swordsman... good times.
He fixes the cable?

PrincessElisa IS an alt id.
Welcome to the boards, Insane Math. And go see Shaolin Soccer (the version with English subtitles, not the butchered Americanized version that's missing key scenes).
