Sharkboy vs. David Young

The pre-show got kicked off with a one on one encounter featuring fan favorite Sharkboy taking on David Young. The winner of this match would get a spot in the 20 man Gauntlet for the Gold match later in the evening. David Young controlled the early part of the match and had many near pin falls, but in the end, Sharkboy was able to get the pin and advance to the Gauntlet.

Winner: Sharkboy

Team Canada w/Scott D’Amore vs. Apolo and Sonny Siaki

Former NWA Tag Team Champions “Showtime” Eric Young and “The Canadian Destroyer” Petey Williams looked to get back into the tag team title picture tonight against the team of Apolo and Sonny Siaki. Both Siaki and Apolo wasted no time and went right after Canadians to begin the match. Both Young and Williams had to regroup outside with manager Scott D’Amore before stepping back in the ring.

Although Apolo and Siaki had never tagged before, they seemed to have worked very well together. Towards the end of the encounter, former X Division Champion, Petey Williams went for his trademark Canadian Destroyer, but had it countered by Sonny Siaki. Upon seeing this, D’Amore got the referee’s attention while fellow Team Canada member A1 hit the ring. A1 then hit a huge suplex on Sonny Siaki which enabled Petey Williams to cover him for the pin and eventual victory.

Winner: Team Canada

Chris Sabin & Traci vs. Michael Shane & Trinity

This match saw two men who have become bitter rivals over the past few months and their respective tag team partners who have been at each other for nearly the past year. Both former X-Division champions wanted nothing else than to embarrass the other and pull off the victory for their team. The match spilled out onto the ramp area and down by ringside where Trinity and Traci exchanged some viscous blows.

Once the action returned to the ring, everyone was absolutely shocked when they saw Traci turn on her own partner by hitting Sabin with a low blow. What came next was even more shocking when Michael Shane superkicked Trinity right in the chin. A defenseless Sabin also fell victim to the Superkick after being set up by his own partner. It was all a swerve and the only two in on it were Michael Shane and Traci. Shane got the pin for his team and then embraced his partner in crime, Trinity.

Winner: Michael Shane & Trinity

Cameras then shifted to the back where Terry Taylor was standing by with all of Team Canada, including the loudmouth Scott D’Amore. Petey Williams stated that his team was about to reestablish their dominance in TNA, while D’Amore added that it was a great start to a great night. Bobby Roode concluded by saying that Team Canada was going to own the Gauntlet.

In another room, Director of Authority, “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes met with the Huntington Beach Bad Boy himself, Tito Ortiz. Ortiz reassured the DOA that hard justice will be served Tito Ortiz style in the main event of the evening.

The focus then shifted back to Terry Taylor who was standing by with a very upset Raven. After calling Jeff Hardy a coward for not being able to compete in their match, he went on to say he was going to hurt somebody tonight and that he was the most dangerous man in wrestling today.

Raven vs. Sean Waltman

Upon waiting on the arrival of his new opponent, Raven was suddenly attack from behind by Sean Waltman to start the match. This wasn’t any ordinary match, but instead it was the return of Raven’s House of Fun Match. Weapons filled the ring, from chairs and trash cans to kendo sticks and staple guns. Yes, that’s right, there was a staple gun hanging from one of the ring poles. Raven was cut open early and wore a crimson mask for the rest of the match. Determined to see more than his own blood, Raven used the cage on one side of the ring as a cheese grader on the head of Waltman.

Although this was definitely Raven’s type of match, Sean Waltman proved to be a worthy opponent, by taking and dishing out some violent shots to the body with weapons of all sorts. Waltman may have pulled off one of the most amazing moves of the night when he climbed to the top of the ring corner and leaped off onto Raven and through a table sitting at ringside. Incredible as it may sound, Raven was able to kick out of the pin and mount his own comeback by hitting the Evenflow DDT on Waltman in the blood covered ring.

The action spilled back to the outside when Raven threw Waltman off the top of the ramp sending the former X-Division champion crashing through tables way below. Raven then climbed his way down to cover him, but Waltman kicked out at 2. Raven then took the injured Waltman back to the ring where he handcuffed him to the ring post. There was nowhere for Sean to go while Raven began swinging as hard as he could with a kendo stick to the back and skull of Waltman. Raven got the mic and asked if he had had enough, but Waltman screamed for him to piss off.

Before Raven could do anymore damage, Dusty Rhodes came to ringside and ordered the Waltman be freed from the handcuffs. Once he was free of the cuffs Waltman got his revenge as he pulled down the staple gun and began punching staples into the forehead of Raven. The crowd could only cringe at the site of Raven’s flesh being punctured by these metal staples. Sean then went for a move off the ropes but was back dropped by Raven into the steel cage which collapsed to the outside on impact. Raven was then able to get the cover for the win.

Winner: Raven

Terry Taylor was then standing by with Diamond Dallas Page who seemed a little upset. When asked why, he told Taylor that his partner, BG James, was not going to make it for their tag team match coming up next. He was upset that James would bail on him in this match that he requested DDP to be his partner in. Ron “The Truth” Killings then came up and said that he was ready to fight and would be happy to take James’ place.

Diamond Dallas Page & Ron “The Truth” Killings vs. The Outlaw and “The Alpha Male” Monty Brown

After being stood up by his original tag team partner, BG James, DDP was happy to know that he would be tagging with a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion. It wasn’t going to be an easy task, beating Brown and the Outlaw, but with Killings in his corner, the odds were back even. DDP and Monty Brown locked up first and the fight was on.

During the middle of the match, both the Outlaw and Monty Brown worked on Killings preventing him from tagging in his partner. Killings was eventually able to get a tag into his partner and DDP who then began to clean house. Just then, Phi Delta Slam hit the ring and began to go to work on Page. DDP managed to fight back and hit both members of Phi Delta Slam with the Diamond Cutter. He then got the Diamond Cutter on the Outlaw, but before he could go for the pin, he was hit by the Pounce by Monty Brown. Brown then rolled him up for the victory.

Winner: The Outlaw and Monty Brown

A clip of Mike Tenay interviewing NWA Tag Team Champions, The Naturals was shown. Chase Stevens said that the late Chris Candido taught them how to be champions and Douglas added by saying Candido will always be looking down on them.

America’s Most Wanted vs. The Naturals for the NWA Tag Team Championship

For those of you who don’t know already, these two tag teams have quite a history with each other. Both AMW and the Naturals have had some of the best matches in TNA history. “Wildcat” Chris Harris and “Tennessee Cowboy” James Storm might be one of the best tag teams in the history of the NWA and have held the belts on numerous occasions, but The Naturals seem to always have their number. In respect for their recently departed mentor and friend, Chris Candido, Andy Douglas brought Candido’s trademark yellow towel to the ring with him and placed it over a chair on the outside of the ring.

These two teams then proceeded to tear down the house and put on a great match. Neither team looked to have the edge and it was a real treat to have seen such a great match between two of TNA’s finest tag teams. In the end, Candido must have been smiling down on his boys when Douglas and Stevens were able to pull off a huge victory over the former tag champs. The crowd then began to chant “Chris Candido” in what must have been an emotional moment for all those in attendance and those watching at home.

Winner: The Naturals

“Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels vs. Shocker for the NWA X-Division Championship

The self proclaimed “Mr. TNA”, Christopher Daniels would have his hands full tonight when he stepped into the ring with Mexico’s own Shocker. Shocker proved to be Daniels toughest opponent to date since winning the title a couple months back. This became a high flying event early on with both Shocker and Daniels leaping from the ropes onto each other. Daniels took control early on in the match, but Shocker fought back and hit a huge frog splash from the top rope that nearly won him the match.

After barely kicking out of the frog splash, Daniels fought back and was able to hit the Angels Wings on Shocker for the pin fall and victory. After winning the match, Daniels grabbed the microphone and bragged how he had just defeated Mexico’s finest and that his is the best X-Division Champion in TNA history.

Winner: Christopher Daniels

20 Man Gauntlet for the Gold Match

The competitors in the Gauntlet were the following in their order of appearance: Bobby Roode, Zack Gowen, Eric Young, Cassidy Riley, Primetime, Sharkboy, A1, Chris Sabin, Petey Williams, Sonny Siaki, Lance Hoyt, Michael Shane, Jerrelle Clark, Mikey Batts, Outlaw, Trytan, The Truth, Apolo, BG James, and Abyss

Some of the highlights of this match included Team Canada’s domination by working together, the return of Zack Gown, Sabin and Shane’s ongoing war, Trytan’s dominance, and BG James making it for this match, but not his own earlier in the night. It all came down to former NWA Heavyweight Champion, Ron “The Truth” Killings vs. Abyss. The Truth got a couple of viscous chair shots to the monster, Abyss’ head that you could hear 2 states away. Killings was about to win the match as he hit a scissors kick on Abyss sending his skull crashing against a steel chair lying below, but the referee was knocked out. Abyss was able to get back to his feet and hit a chokeslam on Killings onto the same chair lying below, but the 3LK member was able to kick out. Abyss eventually got the win with a Blackhole Slam on Killings thus making him the number 1 contender for the NWA World Heavyweight Title.

Winner: Abyss

A.J. Styles vs. Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World Heavyweight Title

It was now time for the main event of the evening which pitted the challenger, “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles vs. “The King of the Mountain” Jeff Jarrett. Former UFC Champion, Tito Ortiz served as the referee to make sure the match was under control. It was a pretty even encounter as the only 2 time TNA Triple Crown winner came prepared to battle. Ortiz did a great job of keeping it clean throughout the match up. Jarrett went for his guitar as a weapon early on, but Tito grabbed it away. Even AJ took the guitar, but Ortiz would not allow it and Styles destroyed it by hitting it against the ring post.

Jeff Jarrett was now going to have to win the match without his great equalizer. Jeff Jarrett hit Styles own move on him towards the end of the match, the Styles Clash. However, the challenger kicked out and was able to fight back and hit the Stroke on the champ. Jarrett also kicked out before 3. Soon thereafter, Monty Brown hit the ring and went for the Pounce on Styles, but AJ quickly moved and Jarrett fell victim to the Alpha Male. Tito Ortiz quickly removed Brown from the ring and sent him to the back.

Just then another referee ran in to make the 3 count, but an irate Ortiz pulled him out of the ring before he could finish. Tito Ortiz wanted to make sure he saw this one through. After mounting a comeback on Styles, Jarrett got in the face of Ortiz and pushed the UFC legend. Ortiz could take no more and clocked the champ with a huge right hook to the face. Jarrett was knocked out cold as Styles climbed to the top rope. Styles then hit a move that he used long ago called the Spiral Tap. Tito Ortiz then dropped to the canvas and began to count…1…2…3. Jeff Jarrett’s year long title reign had come to an end and AJ Styles became the new NWA Heavyweight Champion!!

Winner: AJ Styles

Sharkboy vs. David Young

Odd match for the opener, but worked alright. Relating to the gauntlet match later in the evening was strange and unnecessary, but not too bad. To be frank I hold neither wrestler in particularly high esteem, but they worked well here and managed to open well. 6/10

Team Canada w/Scott D’Amore vs. Apolo and Sonny Siaki

TBA does great tag action, and this was no exception. Apolo and Sonny Siaki work extraordinarily well together, and Team Canada are always good. The match didn't really ignite, though, and was merely good when it should've been great. 7/10

Chris Sabin & Traci vs. Michael Shane & Trinity

First match of the night that was really exciting. Sabin and Shane are good, and the divas are hot tamales. The swerve was surprising but didn't excite me, though the wrestling action was well performed. All in all, an extremely good match that highlighted the talent of everyone involved 8/10

Raven vs. Sean Waltman

Whilst it was a pity that Jeff Hardy wasn't in attendance, Waltman served as a solid replacement, and the match was a real classic. Raven once again turned in an exciting performance, and Waltman matched him blow for blow (by the way, does anyone else think Waltman's much better since he joined TNA?). Tp have Raven win was rather predictable, but then to have Waltman win wouldn't have worked, so I can't complain. 8/10

Diamond Dallas Page & Ron “The Truth” Killings vs. The Outlaw and “The Alpha Male” Monty Brown

DDP and Killings are both good wrestlers, The Outlaw can turn in effective performances in good company and Brown gets better every time I see him. I really enjoyed this match, and Phi Delta Slam's interference was really good. 8/10

America’s Most Wanted vs. The Naturals for the NWA Tag Team Championship

This was easily the match of the night. Two great tag teams, one helluva match. The Naturals dominated with assured confidence, and AMW were as fresh and exciting as ever. If Chris Candido were still with us he would've been proud. 10/10

“Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels vs. Shocker for the NWA X-Division Championship

Whilst I would've preferred to see Skipper in this match, I shan't complain about Shocker. He was pretty good, but Daniels was much better and deserved the match. I would've put this before the tag match so it didn't get overshadowed, but it was still a good solid match. 7/10

20 Man Gauntlet for the Gold Match

A pretty damn good match, utilising the talent very effectively. I didn't like the double booking of a lot of the wrestlers (Killings, Sabin, Shane, Sharkboy, Young, Williams, Siaki, Apolo and Outlaw had all previously appeared), but it still worked. I saw the result a mile off, but that just furthered my enjoyment as I really like Abyss. 8/10

A.J. Styles vs. Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World Heavyweight Title

How could this not rule? Styles put on a classic performance tonight, and Jarrett proved that wrestling wise he fully deserved the championship. Tito Ortiz was an effective ref, and didn't come across as biased at all. If AMW/Naturals hadn't been on this would've been match of the night by a clear mile, but as it was it came a close second.

Good job. I'd like to see the Raven/Waltman match. Sounds like it was pretty fun.

Somebody at TNA needs to learn how to spell "vicious." Or maybe they just think Traci has thick hands. . .

It's kinda hard not to see the Naturals as sentimental favorites going into this, losing their friend and manager just a few weeks earlier. Nice to see that they got a shot in here.

Hopefully they can use Styles' championship run to push their weekly show into a better slot.
