It was in the paper and everything.
Now we're haggling over the cash. I have told them that they can call me "King of Pancakes" for all I care, so long as I get money.
They offered me more or less the average for my level of experience, so recruiters have told me. Nonetheless I told my employers that my wife says I should take it and then go somewhere else because it was too paltry.
I said my wife said it because no-one wants me to be the bad guy in negotiations, especially them, because then it would become personal and I might quit like the 22 other people who have quit this year. Its easier for everyone if my wife said it, and not me.
My wife is actually screaming that I should take it. I'm telling her to be cool. Besides, once its settled, they'll backpay me.
There is an extremely buoyant economy, a very fluid job market, and a huge shortage of experienced lawyers here right now, so I'm as likely to be told to fuck off as the moon is to fall into the sea. Which gives me scope to haggle.
The managing partner is pulling stunts straight out of a car yard. "That's a big increase Dave, and I'll cop some flak from the board over this, but I'm happy to do it because its you."
I shit you not. That is exactly what he said.
But there are other developments. I was in Hong Kong Thursday and Friday last week. Had a good time, drank with some friends, caught up with some clients. Might be a job going there with my old firm. But not working for the crazy incompetant cow I was working for last time. Hmm.
Intriguing because up there we save in one month what takes us a year down here. The exchange rate sucks right now, but even so.
Being smug is like having three or four Wild Turkey and Cokes. Same warm feeling in the tummy.
