i really think Infinite Crisis and 52 will end up seriously hurting DC. Its one thing to charge $15-$20 for a story arc, its another to charge several hundred dollars over 3 years for one tightly wound mediocre crossover.

You didn't like Zero Hour then you were unhappy for a few months. You don't like Infinite Crisis then you have to wait 2 years for it to play out. And with all the DC titles tying into it I've dropped most of them already and have been slow to even consider the One Year Later titles.

No, no-one will give a fuck in 2 years. Nothing substantial will come out of it, and any and all deaths will have been reversed. Most, if not all the new 'legacy' characters will flop, and things will be exactly as they were before things started except it will be an even bigger pill to swallow that the villains will go back to being useless again after the Society crumbles

Fair enough. Avengers Disassembled-$17 House of M-$25 I only read those tpb and understood the full story. All the tie-ins I checked out were self-contained but related. Also most Marvel books were unaffected or received special minis to chart the character in the crossover.
Civil War is hard to say because its not over so we can't see how useless the crossover issues are, what stories are self-contained but related, and what are completely essential.
Infinite Crisis effects all titles, and requires years of crossovers for the story. Also, keep in mind that these Marvel crossovers play more as a trilogy then one big story.

I'll go with that.
IC has required you to pick up some of the extra's in order to get the story, like the specials and secret files.
Millars writing Civil War, so I actually trust that he will deliver the goods without without tie-in issues. Just look at the statements he makes in his comics, particularly 'Wanted'. I doubt his ideals have been corrupted quite yet. Projects have been merging over at Marvel, like evil SHIELD + HoM turns into Registration act, while DC built the ante for IC and shot their load too quickly by throwing OYL out before things had even finished, ruining the possibilities that could have come post-IC.

I've already commented on why this is a flawed statement. I'm not going to re-hash that post. What you're accusing DC of is exactly what Marvel is doing. You followed the Marvel crossovers with no trouble. I follow Infinite Crisis with no problem. Interesting that you conveniently skim over Decimation. As the bridge between House Of M and Civil War, I think it warrants mentioning.

I haven't read Decimation. Still having no problems, but I'm not saying Marvel's not doing some massive crossover, i'm saying DC is doing a bloated one that will require too much money. Marvel: Avengers Disassembled $16 Prelude to House of M $14 House of M $25 Decimation (assuming release of a tpb) $20 Road to Civil War tpbs (lets say two of them) $30 Civil War $25 Civil War tie in tpb $25
DC Identity Crisis $25 Prelude to Infinite Crisis $6 Omac Project $15 Days of Vengeance $13 Rann/Thanagar $13 Villains United $13 Infinite Crisis (issue wise) $28 (probable hardcover, guessing) $30 52 (issuewise, i have no idea how they'd collect it) $130
So these estimate the tpb and hardcovers most likely to be released: Marvel: $155 DC: $371
Then take into account the tie in issues where every DC title is part of the story, whereas Marvel has several (if not most) titles continuing with their stories and being independent of the crossover.

and the DC list doesn't take into account the tpb released that are loosly connected, like Adam Strange and the Flash tpb with the Top or Green Lantern:Rebirth.
I actually overestimated on how many tpb Marvel would release that would be important to the event and needed for the story.

Actually, you forgot the House of M-related TPBs (House Of M: Wolverine, House Of M: Spider-Man, etc) AND the upcoming TPBs of X-Men: The 198, Son Of M, Generation M...
Your bias is showing. You include close to everything DC puts out, but conveniently leave out Marvel's offering. Your excuse - "I didn't have to read everything" - is both a double-standard and fallacious. Both companies said "you don't have to read everything we put out", but Marvel didn't have anything similar to the "Crisis Counselling" portion of the DC website. DC at least attempted to make their crossover less daunting for casual fans.
Like I said, both companies are doing the same thing. You can't damn DC and bless Marvel. Unless you're incredibly biased.

Well you can really look at Marvel as doing a trilogy of stories. Not the same as one big one. Also, they're minimalizing the number of titles. Its not every single title involved. so you can read a lot of titles without even dealing with the crossovers.
Look, i'm not saying Marvel isn't doing a big mega money grubbing crossover. Just that its cheaper and you can read marvel without touching the crossover at all. So Marvel is the lesser evil in all this. I'm glad you're happy with it, but i'm not and i'm saying i don't like it and i'm dropping several titles due to it. i grew up on dc, mainly read dc. but all this has made me more comfortable reading marvel. you may disagree, but i'm just saying where my money is being diverted. and i bet i'm not the only one.

If everything's back to "normal" in three years I might consider picking one or two titles back up. Otherwise there's no reason to bother.
Remember that DC fucked everyone over extra bad with three or four years of sensationalistic bullshit stories that were just going to be wiped out later if they wanted to. (This is an assumption based on the blatant fanboy-catering and lack of any permenance over the last handful of years.)

I'ma gonna agree with r3x. Marvel's events tend to be contained within the parent title or mini series. Dissassembled, for example, was only in Avengers. There were tie ins, yes, but they weren't necessary to the story. You can read the Dissassembled TPB and get the story, from beginning to end (which I did, and enjoyed). You don't have to read the peripheral stuff unless you feel like exploring the idea a bit more.
DC put shit in some titles that directly affects other (did Wonder Woman kill Lord in her title, Superman, one of the minis or a secret files or what? I actually forget).
Thing is- I can’t spell or type. I spell so badly my spell check doesn’t even know what I was trying to spell. And I have five Eisners HAHAHAHHA!!

That really pissed me off. Omac was directly linked to a multi-part story in Superman's 3 books and Wonder Woman's title. It is basically 2 issues of Superman fighting bad guys, then 1 part explaining how he really attacked the JLA, then Wonder Woman fights Superman and kills Lord. But you need to read this crossover to understand the gap between Omac 4 and 5. So, essentially two tpb. And I have no idea if the other 3 minis did this as well.

No! Noooooooooo! I will not sacrifice this thread. We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And *I* will make them pay for what they've done.

I'm liking all of it.Both Marvel & DC are pulling out all the stops to tell stories with(if they let 'em last)HUGE ramifications on their respective universes. And if a couple years later they decide to "wipe" the whole thing,I still have the books to read and enjoy.
