Muppets Headed to FOX
Thu, Mar 7, 2002 11:25 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - FOX is quickly becoming the most puppet-friendly network on television.

The network will premiere "Greg the Bunny," a behind-the-scenes comedy featuring the neurotic puppet actors on a children's TV show, on Wednesday, March 27. And now the network is developing a new prime-time Muppets series with Jim Henson Television and producers Team Todd.

The new series will likely blend familiar Muppets like Kermit the Frog with new characters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "The Muppets have made us laugh for over 25 years," FOX entertainment president Gail Berman says. "FOX is delighted to be developing a new Muppet series."

While the new show is still early in the development process, it most likely will not mimic the backstage/vaudeville format of "The Muppet Show," which ran from 1976-81. Juliet Blake, president of Henson TV, does promise, however, that it will be "fabulous, edgy and audacious."

Team Todd -- sisters Suzanne and Jennifer Todd -- has an eclectic list of movies to its credit, including "Memento," the "Austin Powers" series and HBO's "If These Walls Could Talk" films.

i always wondered why the muppets (original show) wasnt being replayed on comedy central (i mean, they replay all 8 episodes of 'the critic').

but, this is just as good -- id love to see the muppets on tv again!

tho... is it really the best marketing strategy, putting two puppet shows on at relatively the same time? (where one is a lambast of the other?)

Agreed. I think it was the bringing on of all the new characters that brought it down. I mean, I'd rather see Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, and Scooter than Clifford, that elephant/shrimp cooking team, Rizzo (who was brought on originally for the movies), Piggy's nephews, and some Baywatch pigs.

In fact, the only original characters that had any sort of recurring spot were Kermit, Piggy, and Gonzo! Where's Sam the Eagle? Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem? Rolf? Fozzie? These characters got INCREDIBLY short-changed. If FOX is gonna do a new Muppets show, these characters need to be brought back into the spotlight.

yaay! muppets!!!

as much as i agree that the old crew needs to return (it aint the muppets without'em)

...unfortunately... without our boy jim, half the muppets have no voice. kermt, ernie, etc... they're all just... off.

its like the looney tunes commercials that came out after mel blanc died. you knew it was SPOSDA be bugs or sylvester, but... you werent exactly sure.

muppets from space was the first post-henson muppets thing that i really liked (and, note, it featured the traditional core, plus guest spots by ... well, the traditional guest spotters). so, mebbe they're now able to pull it off?

lets hope!!

it'd be good to see the gang back again. i always wanted kermit to be my friend

I think Brian is doing a good job, personally. Of course, if Frank Oz dies, I'll probably never love the Muppets again.

...well, maybe not never...

Rolf will never be seen in any Muppet project again. Since Rolf was Jim Henson's favorite character, and the first one Henson came up with (or something along those lines), he asked that Rolf never be used once he passed on.

BTW, to me, Muppets Tonight sucked, as did Muppets in Space. The last good Muppet project was Muppet Treasure Island.

C'mon, Rob! Treasure Island had Tim Curry! Arguably one of the best villains in Hollywood after Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, and Malcolm McDowell!

That sucks about Rolf, though. I loved that guy. Especially that song he and Kermit sang at the bar in The Muppet Movie. "I Hope That Something Better Comes Along," I believe it was.

Fun stuff. I'll miss that one.

I think they slipped Rolf into the background of Treasure Island during the opening bar scene as a tribute to Henson, but he never spoke.

I love the Muppets as well. Saw both the Muppet Show and Muppets Tonight... as well as all the movies (except for Space... never got around to it).

Too bad about Rolf... I liked him.

Muppets Take Manhattan has always been my favorite Muppet movie. It's just so classic and puts a whole new spin on how the Muppets "actually" met...

I think what both Warner and Henson need to do is find actors not a SINGLE person but perhaps several who can actually do the voice. I bet they could find someone to voice each character.

I thought his name was Rowlf with a w.

Rowlf: Evenin' Rowlf. Rowlf the Dog. Sit yourself down.
Kermit: Kermit. Kermit the Frog.
Rowlf: Please to meet ya.
(Rowlf plays a rapid musical scale across the piano's keys)
Rowlf: I'm no Heifetz, but I get by.
Kermit: That was...that was very nice.
(Rowlf notices Kermit's sad mood)
Rowlf: Whoa, hey, broken heart, right?
Kermit: Does it show?
Rowlf: Listen, when you've been tickling the ivories as long as I have, you've seen a broken heart for every drop of rain, a shattered dream for every fallen star!
Kermit: Exactly. She just walked out on me.
Rowlf: Ah, typical. That's why I live alone.
Kermit: You do, huh?
Rowlf: (starts the song's intro) Yep. I finish work, go home, read a book, have a couple of beers, take myself for a walk and go to bed.
Kermit: Nice and simple.
Rowlf: Stay away from women. That's my motto.
Kermit: But I can't.
Rowlf: Neither can I. That's my trouble...

Rowlf:
You can't live with 'em, you can't live without 'em.
There's somethin' irresistabullish about 'em.
We grin and bear it 'cause the nights are long.
I hope that somethin' better comes along.

Kermit: (spoken): Yeah, I know what you mean...

Kermit:
It's no good complainin' and pointless to holler.
Rowlf:
If she's a beauty she'll get under your collar.
Kermit:
She made a monkey out of old King Kong,
Both:
I hope that somethin' better comes along.

Rowlf:
Ah, but what could be better than a saucy Irish setter
When puppy love comes on strong?
Or a collie that's classy, a laddie needs a lassie,
A lover and wife gives you a new leash on life.

Kermit: (spoken): Uh, Rowlf, was that a new 'leash' on life?
Rowlf: (spoken): Oh yeah...sorry about that.

Kermit:
I don't mean to scare ya, my friend, but I betcha
Come "Father's Day", the litter bug's gonna getcha;
Rowlf:
The urge is righteous, but the face is wrong.
Both:
I hope that somethin' better comes along.

Kermit:
Still, it's fun when they're fetching,
And agree to see an etching
That you keep at your lily pad.
There is no solution, it's part of evolution,
Rowlf:
The pitter-patter of soles,
The little feet of tadpoles!

Kermit: (spoken) Ah, Rowlf, tadpoles don't have feet!
Rowlf: (spoken) Oh. Sorry about that.... 2, 3, 4!

Kermit:
There's no limitation to mixin' and matchin'
Rowlf:
Some get an itchin' for a critter they've been scratchin'.
A skunk was badgered the results were strong.
Both:
I hope that somethin' better,
I hope that somethin' better,
I hope that somethin' better comes along!!!
Rowlf: Beep bop bidder da dum dum bum bum bum!

Rowlf: (spoken): It's not often you see a guy that green have the blues that bad!

Dr. Teeth:
Ohhh yeah! Whooo!
Everybody's lover, everybody's brother, I wanna be your lifetime friend.
Crazy as a rocket, nothin in my pocket, I keep it at the rainbow's end.
I never think of money, I think of milk 'n honey, grinnin like a cheshire cat.
I focus on the pleasure, somethin' I can treasure, can you picture that?
Can you picture that?

Dr. Teeth: (spoken) Hey, Floyd, take a verse!

Floyd Pepper:
Let me take your picture, add it to the mixture, there it is I got you now!
Really nothin' to it, anyone can do it, it's easy and we all know how.
Now begins the changin', mental rearrangin', nothing's really where it's at,

Dr. Teeth:
Now the Eiffel Tower's holdin up a flower.
I gave it to a Texas cat!

Floyd and Janice:
Fact is there's nothin out there you can't do
Yeah, even Santa Claus believes in you.

Dr. Teeth:
Beat down the walls, begin, believe, behold, begat.

Floyd:
Be a better drummer, be an up and comer. Can you picture that?

Animal:
CAN YOU PICTURE THAT??!!

Floyd:
All of us are winnin, pickin and a-grinnin, Lordy but I love to jam.

Janice:
Jelly-belly gigglin, dancin and a-wigglin, honey that's the way I am!

Dr. Teeth:
Lost my heart in Texas, Northern lights affect us, I keep it underneath my hat,
Aurora Borealis, shinin down on Dallas! Can you picture that?
Can you picture that?

All:
Can you picture?

Dr. Teeth:
You gotta see it in your mind!

All:
Can you picture?

Floyd:
You know it's quick and easy to find!

All:
Can you picture?

Janice:
You don't have to buy a frame!

All:
Can you picture? Can you picture that?
Can you picture that?

Floyd:
Use it if you need it

Dr. Teeth:
Don't forget to feed it!

All:
Can you picture that?

He had a one-second cameo in A Muppet Christmas Carol (my personal favorite). He was playing the piano at Fozziwig's Christmas party.

Man, I loved that movie.

Fozziwig: Here is my Christmas speech. "Thank you all, and Merry Christmas."
Robert Marley: That was the speech?
Jacob Marley: It was dumb.
Robert Marley: It was obvious.
Jacob Marley: It was pointless.
Robert Marley: It was... short.
Jacob Marley, Robert Marley: I loved it.

Kermit the Frog: If you please Mr. Scrooge, it's gotten colder and the bookkeeping staff would like an extra shovel full of coal for the fire.
Rat: All of your pens have turned to inkcicles. Our assets are frozen.
Ebenezer Scrooge: How would the bookkeeping staff like to be suddenly... UNEMPLOYED?
Rats: (singing) HEAT WAVE. This is my island in the sun.

Sam Eagle: Oh, you will love business. It is the American Way.
Gonzo: Uh, Sam
(whispers}
Sam Eagle: Oh. It is the BRITISH way.

I LOVED the muppets. My favorite skit was Pigs in Space. In fact, I was going to get my nephews a 3 DVD set, one that contained the Pigs in Space with Mark Hamil, last year, but I passed on it. It was a bit over priced at Borders, and I think that was the only place I found that one at at the time. I should get all of them, haven't seen them in years!

BTW, the Hensen website is very cool and fun.

It's a rented tux ok? I'm not going comando in another man's fatigues.
