 Quote:
ET breaks the news that comedian George Carlin has died from heart failure. The man who made famous the "seven words you can never say on television" passed away at 5:55 p.m. Sunday at Saint John's Hospital in Santa Monica, his longtime publicist said. He was 71.

Carlin, who has had several heart attacks and a history of cardiac issues, went into the hospital this afternoon after complaining of heart problems.

Carlin has more than 20 comedy albums, 14 HBO specials, numerous TV and movie roles, and three best-selling books to his credit. Last year, he celebrated his 50th year in show business, and he had just finished his last HBO special in March, "It's Bad for Ya."

Damn, I'm sorry to hear this. Probably a day doesn't go by that I can't reference George Carlin in a discussion.

He will be truly missed.

i honestly thought he was overrated, i think win people look back they will find him dull. his comedy was based on being shocking, and as time goes by the stuff he said will be less and less shocking.

no, his 7 dirty words bit is just funny. i only saw it last year and it wasn't at all shocking. what was funny was how he didn't rely just on the shock of the joke but on making that shocking joke genuinely funny. he has bits on religion, life, etc that are just plain clever.

yeah, i dunno if i'd consider him a shock-comedian. i think a lot of his stuff is sorta mean-based, which is why i like it -- the whole "fuck everyone" mentality.

if anything, i give him so much credit for being consistent over... geez... 50 years or whatever. HBO always replays his standup, and its such a cool variety of black and white footage, weird 1980s hair, 60s outfits, etc. sure, a lot of it is timely, but a lot of it is also still funny.

Food for thought.

agreed. Carlin didn't rely on shock value. it was just one tool of many that he used. while there was a certain bitterness that seemed to grow more overt in the last few decades, he was geniunely attempting to make people laugh and think about what was going on in the world around them.

I think his stuff up to, I dunno, 1980 was brilliant. As time went on, however, he wasn't funny. He was just playing an angry man complaining about things that bugged him (kind the liberal version of what happened with Dennis Miller).

Still, nothing can take away from the early stuff and for that he deserves a place as one of the greats.

a brief burst of brilliance doesnt make one great, i'v enot seen anything from him in the last 20 years that chris rock couldnt have written. if being old and bitter had comedic value there would be rest homes across the country selling out as night clubs.....

I agree with both G-man and bsams...the last thing that Carlin did that was funny top to bottom was "Carlin at Carnegie" on HBO; you know, the one with "a place for my stuff", "fussy eater" and "have a nice day".

His stuff over at least the last 10 years has been bile filled rants with moments of faint humor. It's such a shame cuz I absolutely loved Carlin when I was a kid. Used to be that HBO would air his special George Carlin at USC and George Carlin: Again! followed by Richard Pryor Live in Concert every New Years Eve. Grew up on his humor and he led me to other comedians that I might not have heard of otherwise.

Sad to see him go but, in terms of comedy, Ol' George had been gone for years....

Oderint, dum metuant.

You are a god damned idiot, you know that? You ought to be smacked upside your dumb-fuck head, even after all these years. Shame on you!
