Go buy The Adventures of Superman Annual #4 (Eclipso: Darkness Within) from a dollar bin if you don't already have it. Right there Robert Loren Flemming knows how to tell a compelling story that doesn't require you to drop acid to understand. Although it's part of series of annuals, but doesn't require you to pick them all up to get what's going on.
The characterization? 10 times better than all 7 issues of FC put together. The JLI interacting with L.E.G.I.O.N. with Hal Jordan, Nightwing, and Aquaman thrown in comes out perfectly - not to mention Guy's debut with his yellow Sinestro ring. And Hawkman? I know it's the post-Hawkworld/Pre-ZH Katar, but he very easily reads as if he was the pre-Crisis Katar in his "debates" with Vril Dox.
My point? Easy to read, great story, awesome fanboy characterization moments - topped with wonderful art by Bob McLeod. It's issues like this that DC put out that blew my mind and had me day dreaming of superheroes all day long to make the time go by.

That was a good issue. Most of the AOS was the best of the Superman series.

I never read it.
The Janus Directive, a crossover between Suicide Squad, Firestorm (who had just discovered he was a fire elemental), Captain Atom, and Checkmate! was the best crossover I've read. It helped that Ostrander wrote 3 of the 4 titles. As a consequence the story was tight, naturally introduced (usually the bane of most crossovers - suddenly and out of nowhere the JLA are caught up in Invasion! or whatever), and with a really meaningful outcome.
