Dial H. The first TPB is out. Really? Is it actually any good? My memories of Dial H for Hero was that it was a vehicle for readers in the 1970s to see their fan-created superheroes in print. I remember the series that came out a few years ago, just titled H-E-R-O. I remember it was great and loved the whole run, tho it only lasted about 24 issues. It was all about the dial passing through different hands and how each person uses the power it grants them. A great interesting take on it. New series I haven't read yet because money's been tight but I'd be interested in picking up the first trade

I recently bought Alan Moore's Nemo (the Antarctic advanetures of the daughter of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen's Nemo) and was bitterly disappointed. Was it about Lovecraft's Cthulhu and other dark gods? I don't know. Think the concept has been bled dry.

The HERO run was great and a very good take on the Hero Dial concept. The current series is good, but I don't know if I'd go around recommending it. It's mostly about making really weird superhero character designs and power sets with the plot of the origin of the dials just kinda thrown in.

The new Valiant stuff is pretty good too. Try Archer and Armstrong. I think you'll get a kick out of it.

by the way, Dave. Are we limited to just western comic books? There are a lot of decent mangas out there. Junji Ito's horror stuff is very good if you like Lovecraft (that's not to say that it's similar. It just had the same depressing/gloomy feel to it).
There's also Leviathan, which sort of focuses on a mysterious guy who seems to be made from the discarded body parts of 5 scientists who went missing years ago, and it sort of ties into the antichrist/the great beast thing, while peppering the story arcs with references to Ozamu Tezuka's works (e.g. Astroboy, Black Jack), kinda like Gaiman's approach to Sandman.

Their output has been top notch. I haven't bought any since about January/February, but that's a money issue. Not quality one. I haven't bought any comics since that time. Before then I was buying everything they published as wasn't disappointed.

Astro City just came out last week under the Vertigo imprint and Fsbles is always top notch. Astro City is Kurt Busiak's cock scratch. Fables is a bit monolithic. I don't know where to start and I don't want to invest in a series of that enormity if I don't like it. Plus, I bought the first TPB years ago, and was not very impresed. More recently I bought the spin-off with Aladdin, the Ice Queen and Sleeping Beauty. Meh. I'll have a look at those Valiant titles.

Best thing I've read lately is The Private Detective by Brian K. Vaughn and Marcos Martin. It's a pay-what-you-want (yep, you can pay $0) digital comic: http://panelsyndicate.com/ That probably scares you, Dave, because you're like 60, but check it out, it's easy to download and no one will hack will your bank account. The only other thing I've been reading are a few Marvel Now titles I mentioned in another thread. No DC at the moment. I thought the New 52 had about the same crap/good shit ratio as the Old 52 and I actually really liked Wonder Woman, but I'm not invested in the new continuity so I just lost interest (I'll eventually get the Morrie titles and Wondy in trades). They made it really easy to quit. Last thing I checked out was The Movement by Gail Simone recently and didn't like it.
