One of the things that I always enjoyed about Marvel Comics as a small child was (and this is really hard to believe), at one point...they had a fairly top-notch, tight-knit continuity. Probably up until (IMO) the early 1990's...this was when it all fell apart....for me at least.

I think that's one of the reasons why I migrated to DC books in high school. They were just coming off the CRISIS, old characters were given a fresh spin...and things started to make sense...oddly enough, though, when I was a kid...I hated DC's books (with a few exceptions) because when I started collecting (in 1979), I was coming in right on the tailend of the existence of the old Multiverse, and trust me...it was confusing (three of the primary books I collected were SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING, which didn't interact taht much with the DCU, thanks to Alan Moore, GREEN LANTERN, which was firmly entrenched in Earth One..that is, whenever Hal Jordan was there....and ALL STAR SQUADRON. If any book screamed Earth Two...that was the one). That's why I preferred Marvel at the time....but now, for some odd reason...I miss the Multiverse. Alot of that is just nostalgia for the past, because I realize taht no matter wahat anybody else says...DC needed the CRISIS. It was a good concept...it's just the execution of it's after effects have been poorly managed in some aspects.

But...Marvel is becoming a clusterfuck, continuity wise. Sure, they're alot better than they were a few years ago (Spider-Clone Saga and Heroes Reborn, anyone?), but thy need a continuity clean up bad.

My proposal is this: ditch the Marvel Universe.

Either step up to bat and say, "Hey...ULTIMATE Marvel is what's what.", or, scratch te whole fucking thing and start from scratch...and none of this HEROES RETURN crap either....follow through with the shit. Shit or get off the pot, Marvel...and I might buy more of yer books.

But....in Marvel's defense, they've kept a tighter rein on their multi-verse than what DC had(except where X-Men is concerned).I'm sure in twenty years or so they'll need a cleaning but right now it's still in check.

i was askin rufie about this a few weeks back... which one is the real spiderman? there are, like, 15 of them, all in their own lil continuity.

they have the original universe, the reborn universe, the ultimate universe... to me, that'd be kinda frustrating.

Exactly.

A thing I've always found to be interesting ids thefact that whenever, with a few exceptions, DC does a revamp or retcon and/or relaunch of an old character, it's usually pretty much a success, yet whenever Marvel tries to do the same thing...it's completely fucked up (Spider-Man Chapter One, Heroes Reborn, the "mystical" Punisher....)

Well, Crisis did do some positive things, but on the whole didn't it confuse things more than untangle them?

I still have no fucking clue about the origins of Supergirl, Power Girl, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and that's just to name a few.

Also, the fact that Batman has already celebrated it's 60th anniversary and yet Bruce is still going on strong is a tad confusing, especially because members of the Old JSA have aged as one would expect. Shouldnt Jimmy Olsen and Dick Grayson be having their mid life crisis now? Shouldn't Lois Lane and Barbara Gordon be in a retirement home? Shouldn't Jim Gordon and Perry White be six feet under?

That's the Crisis I am having with it. Zero Hour put specific date on everything (or tried to)....so how are the characters not aging while the world around them does? Such is comics, I guess.

but then...

there's the age-old debate of.... "should it matter?"

if we're all caught up on the fact that dick grayson aged 15 years in the same span of time that aged bruce wayne 3, then arent we're gettin sucked into this weird void, where comics aren't gonna be fun?

I think you're right with respect to Marvel having good continuity up until the 90s, so my suggestion is for you to just dismiss early and mid 90s Marvel - as you say, at the moment it's fine and they shold keep it that way!

I've been reading Marvel and DC since 78, the only time I ever cut down on comics was in the early 90s and most of them were Marvel comics - Spiderman, Iron Man, Cap, Avengers, Thor all went!
