I absolutely loved this movie. It is in my top three most entertaining movies of the year, along with Spider-Man and Bourne Identity. For one thing, it is nonstop comedy. Cedric The Entertainer is one of the most gifted stand-up comics on the scene today, and he was great as the crochety old man (the role Johnny Witherspoon would typically play, for example, in Friday). Ice Cube is great as a "straight man" in ensemble comedies like this, where every minor character is wackier than the next. Eve was really impressive in what I believe was her acting debut. And it prominently featured one of my favorite songs, "Got To Give It Up" by Marvin Gaye.
But what I especially loved about Barbershop was that every character was given a chance to be in the spotlight, and to go through a very positive change. Everyone "came of age" to one extent or another--for a movie that took place over the course of one day, everyone learned something or became a better person that day.
You may be thinking this sounds a lot like another great black comedy, Friday. And it is similar in many ways. I love Friday--it was one of our favorite movies back when I lived in the dorms, along with the Kevin Smith and Tarantino movies, so aside from being hilarious, it will always remind me of those happy times. Friday also has Cube as the center of a zany cast, it also takes place over the course of a single day, and even the plots themselves are extremely similar. But while the drug use in Friday may turn some potential viewers off, Barbershop is a very human story about people trying to get along and live life, and how they can rise to the occasion when they really have to.
