Reading all of the recent Legion/gay related threads made me think about my own personal "coming out". It was a very specific month and year in my life and I wondered what was The Legion up to that month?
I came out in October 1980 - this was a huge month for me because I moved to
Toronto, told my best friend I was gay, met my first boyfriend and fell into my first long-term relationship all in that month. My curiosity sent me back to my cartons of old Legion books. As I came closer and closer to the October 1980 issue I began to anticipate what Th Legion story might be. This was around the time of Mordru and the earth war, there was a Fatal Five arc around that
time too. I hoped the issue would be a really cool one - maybe even feature my favourite legionnaire - Luornu. The issue prior to the October one did indeed feature Duo Damsel and Bouncing Boy on the cover. I lifted the book to reveal the October issue hidden beneath. And recoiled in horror!
No! No! No! Not Dr. Mayavale!!!!! Yes, sadly this was the issue that coincided with one of the most important months of my life. I painfully re-read the story searching for parallels to my coming out process. The only thing I could come up with was this - I was entering a new (gay) world where many of the men, at times, seemed to possess 8 arms and some of them wore silly hats.

Anybody else care to identify their "coming out" issue?

But was that issue cover-dated October, or did it come out in October, Cargg?

I'm not sure if this is still the case today without checking, but back then, the cover date was always a couple of months off from the release date . . .

Wasn't it?

It would've been September of '84 for me. I'll have to look that up in Legion land.

Jim -

I checked it out for you. You came out at great time in Legion lore. The Legion had just split into two books (for the first time) the previous month. LSH and Tales of the Legion. We were into issue 2 of the wonderful LSV arc in LSH. And Tales was featuring one of your faves - Supergirl - in a Dark Circle storyline.

Look at it this way - there was so much going on in your life that you were probably blissfully unaware of the dreadful Dr. Mayavale issue.

Why not pick some earlier issue you liked and in which there are parallels - surely your coming out did not just happen instantly, it must have been turning over in your mind for a while?

Maybe my favourite vicarious past-time (The Legion) had hit such an all-time low that I figured it was time to "get-a-life".

Well I've kinda never really had an official coming out (everyone knew before I did so there was no need to tell anyone) but as a sort of vague date probably my fifteenth birthday would be a good time to go by, which would make it June 1991. So what were the Legion up to then?

Hey Bevis,

Just wanted to point out that I also turned 15 in June 1991!

Hmmm... while I can't directly answer the question myself, a signifcant event in my life was when my high-school sweetheart/long-term on-off girlfriend came out to me. That would be, I believe, May 1999.

I came out when I was 21. It was at a cousins party. I had drunk way too much 20/20 then loudly announced to my mum that I was gay infront of everyone. I then spent the next 10 hours projectile vomiting. It wasn't exactly a high point in my life.

I came out Hogmanny (new years eve) 1993 in a very drunken phone call home to my parents who were busy trying to deal with a houseful of smashed guests who were trying to drink as much of my fathers whiskey acollection s they could possibly get away with... being the typical scotsman my father was more worried about his alcohol not being wasted on "those bloody gannet of neighbours" than he was about my big news...
was quite sweet really now I look back on it, I'd forgotten about that.... bless 'im.
He was a right repressed evil cunt about it the next day though and I don't think we had many civill words for about 18 months after that... oh well, we're fine now though.

oooops ...meant to add amongst my little tale that I have no idea what was going on in the legion at that time as I was trying to be all "mature" and had given up buying comics to impress my then boyfriend... though of course I was sneaking into Forbidden Planet when he wasn't around to take peaks at their going ons.

My big coming out would have been summer of 1991.

Met the guy that made me WANT to come out and move in with him (which was a big deal as I'd always lived at home)!

I distinctly remember sitting in our charming li'l apartment near the college reading TMK Legion. I had been semi-uninterested in the series (except for the Matter-Eater Lad issues) and THE QUIET DARKNESS certainly didn't help (it was AWFUL!)

But I remember with issue # 25, TMK seemed to develop a new energy. I could almost 'feel' the energy coming from the pages... a feeling that something BIG was gonna happen. That feeling continued through the rest of the TMK/TM run for me (PEAKING with the launch of LEGIONNAIRES-- my most highly-anticipated comic of ALL time), and I went back and reread the earlier TMK issues with a new appreciation (EXCEPT for The Quiet Darkness. *uggh!*)

Anyhoo, that guy and I stayed together for 5 years... I know that when we broke up, ZERO HOUR had happened and we were in the early (and still good) stage of the Reboot stories...

And I have never "remarried"...

Welcome to Bizarro World - your girlfriend is a lesbian. Yup, May 1999 was the conclusion to the Bizarro Legion storyline.

Bevis - you came out at a momentous time in Legion history - TMK had just blown up the Moon and Earth was dealing with the aftermath.

While you were focussing on being "all mature", The Legion decided to focus on an all kiddie issue. The one on Quarantine world featuring Ivy, Garridan and Kent Shakespeare as the token grown-up.

Matthew.

Yeah, they were. And like Mllash mentioned the year started out strong with the Matter-Eater-Lad/
Evillo story. Followed by the story arc where Mysa gets her backbone back (after being abused by Mordru) in the war effort. Only to have the year end with the dismal (and practically legionnaire-free) "The Quiet Darkness" 4-parter. But the next year starts strong with the introduction of Batch SWG. One of my personal all-time favourite Legion moments was the the first glimpse of these bright, shiny stars amidst all of the darkness of TMK.

I had gotten back from college a few weeks earlier. I was staying at my mom's place. It was June 17, 1978. I was almost 21 and tired of feeling so alone, so I went to a local gay bar, met a man, got drunk, met a gay celebrity that nite and turned him down. ( This celebrity got pissed and threw his wig at me....Yuck!!! )

The man I met that nite? We dated for a while but it didn't work out. He was very nice, though, and I'm glad he was the first man for me.

I was not reading the Legion at that time, I had stopped a few months earlier and started up again in Sept. 1980.

Anyone know what the Legion was up to in June, 1978?

The June'78 issue of Superboy and the LSH featured that big ol' leather daddy Grimbor in his second appearance.
Now answer me a question - WHO WAS THAT CELEBRITY?

It was Rip Taylor...HE was the one who threw his wig at me.

The bartendar picked it up after Rip left.

" Do you want it ?? " He asked me, a smile on his face.

" Yuck!! No, throw it out!! " I told him, repulsed by the blonde wig.

So now you know. [DOH!]

Man From Cargg -

Thanks! I remember buying that Grimbor story at a Comic book store a few years later after I'd returned to the LSH.

Pretty good story.

I hadn't even heard of Rip Taylor until I read this thread... but after looking at the bio picture from his official website, I'd say he could do a credible job of playing R.J. Brande in a live-action movie. It's the mustache that cements the deal -- of course, he'd have to wear a wig again, as R.J. had a pretty full head of hair the last time I checked.

Oh my God.. and, in about six months, it will be 30 years since I came out of the closet.

Many of you regular posters here weren't even around 30 years ago.

I'm glad this Legion thread resurfaced. I had forgotten about it.

I miss many of those Legion posters. I had chatted with them for only a few months when DC closed up that Legion site where I met them. They were nice, and fun, too.

I'm one of the very few who still posts here.

Oh, yeah.. this was one of my very first posts here, as I got here in the middle of May, 2003, and didn't post for the first two weeks.

The Legion seems to have quite a number of gay fans, now and historically.

But I cannot associate an issue with any kind of "coming out." I came out on these boards after Gov. McGreevey of NJ came out in a very public, rather tragic way. But like he, I too am a gay American.
