Associated Press: - The nation paused today to mark the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a heartfelt ceremony at ground zero and other solemn remembrances around the country.
President Bush said history will look back at America's response to the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and conclude that "we did not tire, we did not falter and we did not fail."

Bush marked the seventh anniversary of the deadliest attack on U.S. soil with a moment of silence at the White House at 8:46 a.m., precisely the moment when terrorists crashed a hijacked airliner into the World Trade Center in New York. A second plane struck the trade center shortly thereafter. Another was flown into the Pentagon and still another crashed in a field at Shanksville, Pa.
At the dedication of a memorial at the Pentagon honoring those who died there, Bush said the terrorists could not break the resolve of the U.S. armed forces.
Relatives of victims killed at the World Trade Center gathered at ground zero in lower Manhattan for readings from dignitaries and a recitation of the names of the dead. Later today, presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain were due at ground zero to pay silent respects.
The ceremony at ground zero included moments of silence at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. -- the times that two hijacked jets slammed into the twin towers. Two more moments of silence were to be held at the times the towers fell. Services were also being held in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon, where a new memorial will be dedicated.

9-11. The day everyone stops what their doing to let the terrorists win. I didn't see anyone stop what they were doing today. Just because there were a few ceremonies and many people taking a few moments to reflect on this day and what it means to them and this country doesn't mean the terrorists win. You are a weird fucking person sometimes. Lighten up.

The other thing I hate is that there is nothing at the world trade center site. Its been seven years. Why haven't we build something there?

Not to politicize the whole thing but not everyone seems to remember, there are those in this country that would let the enemy build up and attack again. I heard criticism on TV again today of the Bush Doctrine of if there is credible evidence someone is going to attack us, attack them first. Many people unfortunately would like to stick there heads in the sand and wish this away. Many innocent people died for no reason of their own. The forces that did this will do it again if they arent lept on the run.

The victims family members are primarily to blame but the lease holder has been a dick too. Hopefully, in the next 3-5 years they will be done building everything.

Only Siths speak in absolutes Ray. In all seriousness I support the War in Iraq I just feel it was mismanaged at times. If you are ever going to have peace in the middle east and israel it will be because democracy has taken root there. This is a first step. I know you don't want to believe it because you hate the man so much but there is a chance that 20 years from now historians will look back and say because of Bush there is peace in the middle east. Plus one added bonus of the war in iraq was al qaeda came to us. Initially they made life pretty miserable for us. And if our leaders listened to the french/liberal partisans in this country we would have packed up and left. Instead we and the iraqis have shredded al qaeda to practically nothing in the country and whatever is left is getting attacked by iraqis now who have had enough with these scumbags. The war worked and now we will concentrate on afghanistan.

Al-Queda has spent countless resources in Afganistan and Iraq, resources that could have been spent attacking here. Better to fight them in their world than ours.
Ray a cold hard fact that you'll have to understand is Pakistan has nukes, you just cant go invading looking for Bin Laden who by most accounts could be anywhere from Pakistan to Somalia. Being in Iraq does not drain the intelligence services looking for him, the Iraq war supplemental budgets are completely separate from the intelligence budget which is set by your Democratic congress. You can bet if Bin Laden is definitively found anywhere in the world we will get him. I know GW will, I know McCain will, by the time Obama sweet talks whatever country he is found to be in he will be long gone. And to correct your misstatements several of those responsible have been captured and killed. Osama is one of many.

I just hate that every channel has to have 9-11 coverage. We all know what happened. I wish you were correct. However, it's way to easy to pick up a newspaper or turn on a TV any other day of the year and see people who have obviously forgotten what happened and what could happen again...or never understood why it happened in the first place.

And let's not forget how our two presidential candidates responded back in 2001. Barack Hussein Obama: - ... We will have to be unwavering in opposing bigotry or discrimination directed against neighbors and friends of Middle Eastern descent. Finally, we will have to devote far more attention to the monumental task of raising the hopes and prospects of embittered children across the globe — children not just in the Middle East, but also in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and within our own shores....
John McCain: - ... These were not just crimes, they were acts of war, and have aroused in this great nation a controlled fury and unity of purpose not just to punish but vanquish . . . vanquish our enemies. Americans know now that we are at war, and will make the sacrifices and show the resolve necessary to prevail. I say to our enemies, we are coming. God may show you mercy. We will not...

Is Obama suggesting that a bunch of racist children crashed planes into the World Trade Center because they were bitter?

I don't know what's worse: McCain's war-loving ramblings or Obama's whiny liberal hand-wringing. Probably the latter.

The war worked and now we will concentrate on afghanistan. Palpatine has clouded your mind. yes al queda came to us in iraq, and many many innocent civilians have been killed because of this. saddam may have been bad but we've been worse. we've done more torture, brought more random violence, and have generally helped bin laden's cause by doing all of this. democracy can't be forced upon a country, and democracy isn't some magical pure thing. hitler and saddam came to power through democracy. the whole point is that they have to choose it and fight for it themselves. military invasions only unify a country against the invaders. look at iran. there is a strong movement to reform things now, if we act in ways to help them reform (like diplomatic pressure which makes it harder for the bad guys to maintain a powerbase) then things will improve, but if we invade right off the bat all we do is unite all of iran against us. No I think he's claiming that poverty motivated Bin Laden...cause, you know, it's not like Bin Laden came from one of the wealthiest families in the world or anything. a simple way of looking at things. bin laden is one guy, who does he recruit? what is he saying, what is he playing on to recruit? hitler wouldn't have been able to come to power if people weren't unhappy and looking to blame someone. bin laden uses our presence in the middle east to say "look! foreign invaders! we must protect our home." and people join him because they want to protect their homes, or because their family members have been killed by our bombs. diplomacy, even if it fails and still leads to war, at least shows that we're reasonable and that war is not our main goal. understanding these people is the best way to minimize and undermine bin laden's power. but by invading we only bolstered bin laden's claims by giving some proof that we want to rule the middle east. essentially what people like you are saying is that we shouldn't try diplomacy, we should jump right to putting American troops lives in danger and the lives of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. i would prefer to try and talk bloodlessly first. obama has been clear that he wouldn't take military action off the table, he'd just be an adult and try a peaceful solution first.

Ray, I'm going to say that we need to agree to disagree on whether or not the war in Iraq was a good idea. You've got your opinion, and I've got mine. But how in the hell can you say that we've done more torture in Iraq than Saddam's regime?

Doc, there's no need to beat around the bush just because Ray's had sand in his vagina lately.
There's only one reason why someone would say, "we've done more torture in Iraq than Saddam's regime:" It's because he's an idiot.

Ray, I'm going to say that we need to agree to disagree on whether or not the war in Iraq was a good idea. You've got your opinion, and I've got mine. But how in the hell can you say that we've done more torture in Iraq than Saddam's regime? there was a study done in 2005 after abu graib. saddam may have been bad, but he was more pointed. he tortured specific people and killed certain people. the death toll has been higher and more chaotic, the torture and abuses have also been random towards people who were guilty of nothing more than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. a lot of people detained are there because someone gave their name or they had the bad luck of being picked up, no evidence, no trial. the atmosphere of recklessness under bush's lead lead to that. and i would think that anyone who loved America would be horrified by our actions and want to root out the problems in our system and our leaders so that America can once again be the respected good guys we used to be. of course that seems to be a democratic viewpoint that is attacked with: Blame America First! Sincerely, Ray which only undermines and weakens America, allowing the corruption and global antipathy to become deeprooted.

Yeah, given all those mass graves that have been uncovered Saddam couldn't have been very picky.

i'd rather have a safe America than a well respected America. is America really safe if we've antagonized half the world, and increased the number of terrorists who want to attack us? The iraq war has done this.

The iraq war has done this. the politics of appeasement that Clinton used didnt seem to stop the 9-11 attacks, i'm not blaming Clinton these guys are nut jobs. What I'm saying is it's proof that trying to be buddy to the world wont stop them, our chances are better fighting them in their world and making them commit resources to the fight there. i'd like to see a citation that there are more terrorists who want to attack us, you cant let liberal blogs shade your thoughts.
