according to box office mojo, this was the first weekend since it's premiere that "dark knight" was not in wide-release (which they say means less than 250 theaters)

the last day of the film's 98-day run was thursday, october 23rd, where it made $43,381 to reach the (thus far) final total of $527,526,286.

It hasn't hit the second run theaters here yet. I doubt it will make any kind of money once it hits those.

Batman has a new adversary: Batman.

The mayor of an oil-producing city in southeastern Turkey, which has the same name as the Caped Crusader, is suing helmer Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. for royalties from mega-grosser "The Dark Knight."

Huseyin Kalkan, the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor of Batman, has accused "The Dark Knight" producers of using the city's name without permission.

"There is only one Batman in the world," Kalkan said. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us."

No one from the town of Batman has explained why it took so many years to take legal action. Batman first appeared as a comicbook character in 1939 and the "Batman" TV series started in 1966. Tim Burton's first bigscreen rendition for Warner Bros. came out in 1989. Undoubtedly the fact that "Dark Knight" is about to pass the $1 billion mark at the B.O. played a part in stirring the ire of the Turkish hamlet.

The mayor is prepping a series of charges against Nolan and Warner Bros., which owns the right to the Batman character, including placing the blame for a number of unsolved murders and a high female suicide rate on the psychological impact that the film's success has had on the city's inhabitants.

Former natives of Batman are also said to have encountered obstacles when attempting to register their businesses abroad.

The mayor is working on gathering evidence he claims will show that the city of Batman predates the 1939 debut of Bob Kane's superhero in DC Comics.

"We are only aware of this claim via press reports and have not seen any actual legal action," a Warner Bros. rep said in a statement.

While the town of Batman has suddenly shown great interest in the property, there's no evidence that the citizenry has ever shown much loyalty to the Caped Crusader -- not even on Halloween.

Unprovoked? They're suing The Bat-Man.

The DVD comes out soon. I'm starting to believe that we will see a re-release around oscar time if its nominated for anything.

I've heard a lot of people say that this movie is the comic book movie equivalent of The Departed. If it does as well as the Departed did I expect comic book movies to be even bigger than they are now.

That seems like a strange analogy to me. Gangster flicks have been critically acclaimed for years and Scorcese gangster movies are almost always Oscar nominated.

I would think a better analogy would be that this is the comic book movie equivalent of "Stagecoach" in that it elevated the western out of the "B" movie genre and into the mainstream of critical acclaim.

I wouldnt say that the Spidey films, X-Men films, the original Superman film, the Burton Batman film and a whole host of others, were viewed as b-movies.
Ditto for Begins as well!

My explanation of the analogy was imprecise. I'll rephrase.

"Stagecoach" elevated the western genre out of the catagory of "B" movie to critical heights previously unheard of for that genre.

"The Dark Knight" did the same thing, insofar as it elevated the comic book movie out of the catagory of "popcorn" flick into critical heights previously unheard of for that genre.

I thought Batman Begins was the first comic book movie that wasn't a B movie. In my opinion it was the first movie that didn't rely on the comic to be good. You could have gone in there knowing nothing about Batman and enjoy it.

I know enough people who knew nothing about comics other than the names of a big few characters, and are huge fans of films like X-Men, Blade, the 89 Batman film, Spiderman etc

I dont think there have been any comic book films that rely on you knowing anything about the comic books, in fact thats often been what fanboys moan about, the fact that the films are geared to those that dont read comics.

THE DARK KNIGHT Returns To Theaters On January 23rd, 2009:
  • On January 22nd, 2009, the nominees for the 2009 Academy Awards will be announced. Clearly, Warner Bros. is confident that a) THE DARK KNIGHT will be one of the five Best Picture nominees, and b) the ensuing excitement amongst fans will be enough to drive them back to the theater for one last celebratory screening. At the end of this second run, once you factor in those inflated IMAX admissions, another $77 million might be possible. $1 billion worldwide, on the other hand, is guaranteed (it's only $4 million shy at the moment).

wow, best picture!

all the oscar buzz talk that i ever read was typically solely about ledger and best supporting actor -- i never thought it would be in the typically elitist-ish* best picture category. (* to comedies, action films, and typically any movie not featuring someone retarded or handicapped in some fashion). but, fuck yeah, i'll see it again in theaters!
