Oscar `Knight'? Batman rises to serious contender AP- LOS ANGELES - As the box-office bankroll climbed for " The Dark Knight " last summer, the Hollywood consensus was that a posthumous nomination for Heath Ledger was the Batman blockbuster's best Academy Awards hope.
Now that critics have gotten a peek at all the last-minute Oscar contenders, "The Dark Knight" has emerged as a solid contender for best picture and best director for Christopher Nolan .
Web sites such as TheEnvelope.com and Awardsdaily.com rank Nolan and Ledger among key Oscar contenders and list "The Dark Knight" alongside best-picture possibilities such as Ron Howard 's "Frost/Nixon," Gus Van Sant 's "Milk" and David Fincher's " The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ."
"Far be it for me to try and predict, and I think that anybody looks like a (jerk) if you really try to predict what people are going to vote for. But certainly, for me, I think that the serious contenders in this movie in my mind are Heath, Chris for director because he's done an extraordinary job, and I do believe best picture, as well," " Dark Knight " star Christian Bale said Wednesday night at a cocktail reception for the filmmakers and critics.
It's unusual for an action flick to climb into the company of Hollywood 's year-end prestige pictures, with Oscar voters tending toward highbrow literary works rather than comic-book adaptations. Among the action films that made the best-picture cut at the Oscars were the three " Lord of the Rings " movies and " Raiders of the Lost Ark ."
But building on the critical and commercial success of 2005's " Batman Begins ," the sequel elevated the superhero genre to a new high, with critics ranking "The Dark Knight" as one of the year's best films.
"It is a genre movie, but I think it goes beyond it with the themes in this movie," said "Dark Knight" co-star Aaron Eckhart . "It's an important movie sociologically. I feel like in this day and age, with terrorism and with the cancers of the city and people trying to find a voice within their own city, this is an important film.
"But it's a Batman film, so it has that going for it. It has that going against it."
With about $1 billion in worldwide theatrical grosses, "The Dark Knight" arrives on home video Tuesday, two days before the Golden Globe nominations , where the movie could gain some Oscar momentum if it scores well there.
Ledger, who died in January of an accidental prescription drug overdose, is considered a likely supporting-actor nominee for his diabolical performance as Batman nemesis the Joker. Oscar nominations come out Jan. 22, the one-year anniversary of Ledger's death.
"I'd like to think he would be very quietly proud of the fact that people really responded to it in the way he'd intended, were moved by the performance," Nolan said. "As far as Heath goes, any and every validation of the success of his performance is a great source of pride to me and relief to me that I've done my end of getting his performance out there."

they're starting to promoting the buhgezus out of the DVD now. if i had to make a singular complaint about anything "dark knight" related, it'd be the picture they so often use (and is even a DVD cover option) of the batpod ...that... drove through a building? or something? and is crashing through a window, to then fall on the camera. ...again, or something. wtf, man. wtf.

Actually, Rob, about the only scene in the movie I hated was when Bats spun the Bat Pod on the wall after he flipped the truck...I thought it was over the top and dumb.

'Dark Knight' DVD Disappointingly Light Robert K. Elder--Chicago Tribune- Batman has helped put Chicago back on Hollywood's radar, especially with the high-profile productions of "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" having been filmed here in the last few years.
But the new two-disc DVD of "The Dark Knight" sheds little light on Chicago as Gotham City.
Or on much else.
The movie translates spectacularly well onto the smaller screen, and the late Heath Ledger's menacing turn as the Joker remains a riveting, hypnotic performance. His line at the end of the movie, "I've got a feeling we're going to be doing this for a long time," is haunting, given Ledger's premature death in January at age 28.
But by modern standards, "The Dark Knight's" DVD package and extras are -- with apologies to the Joker -- laughably thin.
A few of the features (especially "Batman Unmasked" on the Blu-ray version) appear to be repackaged TV pieces meant to promote the movie before its release.
Nevertheless, a few minutes of behind-the-scenes footage of the armored car chase on Lower Wacker Drive on the feature "Evolution of the Knight" will be of interest to Chicagoans. Shots of an outdoor dry run of the Batpod chase sequence stunts (possibly in rural England), including a test of the famous end-over-end flip of a semi, later duplicated on LaSalle Street, are worth watching.
But that's about it. Other mildly interesting components include six larger-format IMAX scenes, and a featurette with composer Hans Zimmer talking about crafting the Joker's musical cue.
Director Christopher Nolan provides no commentary track, and even stranger, no one mentions the loss of Ledger. This is odd, considering the talk of a posthumous Academy Award for best supporting actor.
Nolan gave his "Memento" a lavish DVD treatment, complete with a re-edited version of the film only accessible when viewers solve a puzzle. With the mischievous persona of the Joker built into "The Dark Knight," ample opportunity exists for mischievous DVD Easter eggs and a wide array of featurettes.
Given the stature of the film, which ranks No. 2 behind "Titanic" on the all-time domestic box office charts, "The Dark Knight" deserves more. So do fans. Someone light up the Batsignal.

The imax scenes seem pointless on DVD, especially as they are not widescreen. The Gotham Tonight segments got boring real quick.
Everything else seemed rather dull!

i never understood the appeal of imax scenes that were watched outside of an imax theater. isn't that like providing surround sound through a mono speaker?

From looking at it, the scenes themselves have no extra footage in them, they are just a different (more annoying) aspect ratio. Its just a big square box in the middle of your screen with black bars either side.
Hardly translates well to home viewing!

the zimmer featurette was more entertaining than informative, but if I didn't understand motivic development by now I'd have no business in this field. the article touched on it, and I was disappointed by the lack of location featurettes. it seemed like the spidey featurettes spent as much time talking about cleveland as new york as the tdk featurettes spent on chicago as gotham. and that ain't right. as the inventor of the ferris bueller field trip™, I would've enjoyed a more detailed walkthrough, since by my third viewing I was sitting through the exterior sequences like 'yup... been there... been there... hey, that's that one building...'
the unmasked featurette is a repackaged history channel special, and it's not bad, but they could have used the 'batman tech' special from about the same time and it would've been a lot more interesting to a lot of people. (if disc 2 isn't copy-protected I'm considering making my own smash-up features disc with both specials on it.) and all the imax stuff really isn't worth it unless you've got at least a 32" hdtv (really a 42" to see a major difference) and bitchin' home-theater sound. I'm still glad I bought it - the digital copies are useful as my video card is lined out to my tv and this saves me having to jockey the discs around. but unfortunately, it seems like the coolest thing about the edition I bought is that the mask packaging sort of matches the special-edition iron man case I have. hopefully they'll do a begins/dark knight set with a bunch more stuff crammed into it soon.

I agree with Rob on the Imax thing. The whole point of Imax is a huge screen and 3D. I don't see why anyone would want those shots on a DVD. Even if you had the biggest home theater setup on earth, why bother?
On the other hand, maybe the dearth of features is simply because Nolan didn't shoot that much extra stuff, especially in light of the Ledger death.
Probably the most entertaining thing they could have done was get Adam West and Jack Nicholson to do a voiceover commentary, moaning about how Bale and Ledger "stole" their characters.

is it 5 to 3 or some shit ratio like that? you know it's a shitty ratio when none of the aspect adjustments on your tv can make it look passable!

I'll bet that the reason this DVD release is "light" is so they can release a directors cut and interviews about Ledger after the second theater run.

No ‘Dark Knight’ for China by JACQUES STEINBERG- Moviegoers in China will not get to experience Heath Ledger’s bone-chilling performance as the Joker in “The Dark Knight” — or any other aspect of the film for that matter. While “The Dark Knight” is already showing in Hong Kong, Warner Brothers has opted not to open it in China, or even offer it to government censors for their consideration, because of what the studio described as “prerelease conditions” and “cultural sensitivities,” The Associated Press reported. The studio may have been concerned that censors would be offended by scenes shot in Hong Kong, including those in which Batman nabs a gangster. Another potential point of conflict: the film includes a brief appearance by Edison Chen, above, the Hong Kong singer and record producer who appeared in sexually explicit photographs with several women that were posted on the Internet this year.
