plus, even if the door was wide open, it's not like the entire station would have filled with water in seconds. it was huge! they could have hung out for a half hour or so, saying how much it sucked that water was flooding in, before deciding to swim back to the top. ...through more water.

No, that's who I meant. The blonde woman Desmond sees in the present is Boone and Shannon's babysitter who fell down the stairs. Duh.

Actually, no.

You might recall that there was a pool/entry into the station from underneath that was open to the ocean which people could use to swim up and into the station. The only thing that keep that pool "level" and prevented it from filling up the station with water was the air trapped in station.

If Charlie hadn't kept that door locked/shut once the water started coming in the porthole, the "air bubble" would have collapsed and water would have started rushing in and up through that giant swimming pool sized opening the bottom. Most likely at that point the whole station, with Desmond in it, would have sunk like a rock.

In addition, I think a valid argument can be made that Charlie "wanted" to die. He had cheated death many times (if you believe Dexter's premonitions) and the more he did so the more he was convinced that had eventually had to die to save Claire and the kid. Therefore, even if Charlie could have found a way out in time, I don't think he wanted to.

Ok, I got that last bit from a friend who (insanely) remembers Boone mentioning that his babysitter Theresa fell down the stairs, back in season 1. This woman is also named Theresa and Faraday presumably did time-displacing experiments with her, which could have caused disorientation and thus the accident.

getting overtly nerdy and nitpicky, there's no way the station that large would fill with water because of a window-sized hole. the physics wouldn't allow the air to leave quick-enough to force the pool water to rise.

That's not my explanation. That's the explanation I recall was bandied about at the time as to why he locked himself in there.

Same thing. As much as I'd like to take credit for it, that was something persons in authority over the show said back when that episode aired. I think it's pretty much, along with the nerdy and nit-picky stuff above, the "official" motivation.

Yet another kick ass episode.

So glad to see Jin is alive, even though they kept hinting at still being alive. This season continues to keep rewarding the long time fans. I love it.

i didn't think it was as good as last weeks, but still really fun.

i actually enjoy the show a lot more now that the writers have been forced with a definitive countdown clock. like they're actually leading to something now, instead of just cock teasing forever.

sawyer has certainly become a vagina, which is disappointing. but juliette still has amazing tits, which is rewarding!

I was glad to see "evil Ben" back last night, as opposed to "turning into a pussy Ben".

Also, I thought last night's ep gave us yet another hint that Jacob is time-traveling Locke. When Locke got all nervous about going anywhere near the beam of light but didn't want to admit why, I think it was a hint that he realizes the one thing that absolutely cannot happen is for two versions of the same person to encounter each other, at least knowingly.

When Locked tried to see Jacob's face a few seasons ago and things went kablooey I think it was because he couldn't look at "himself."

Yeah, the upside of the seasons getting shorter is that now there are no "fixing the van" or "golfing" episodes.

Also, there's none of that usual thing where the writers don't know from season to season whether the network's going to cancel them or expect the series to run for ten years.

just finished watching the episode. thought it was really good -- again, you get the real sensation that things are actually happening; actually falling into place.

one individual i nerd with about the show just happens to be good at anagrams. yes, nerds. and he's not just good, he's like guy-from-da vinci-code good. and he happened to spot the company name on the van ben was driving:

"canton-rainier: carpet cleaning"

the first part, "canton-rainier" anagrams (verb form?) to "reincarnation"

I think.

The popular theory now is that Jack's dad is Jacob or its the body that Jacob is currently inhabiting or something like that.

I thought Jack's dad once said (in a vision to Locke, I think) that he "speaks for" Jacob.

I still think time-traveling Locke is Jacob. Jacob can't speak to his past self directly so he uses Dr. Shepherd.

It's possible that Jacob could speak to Locke if it was done so that Locke can't recognize himself but I think beyond that he has to use Jack's dad as a conduit

But if that's true, he'd still have to be at least partly Jack's dad, or he wouldn't have said "Say hello to my son". Unless that's another mindfucking trick and one of the characters (Ben) is actually Locke's time-displaced-son (or time-displaced-Locke's son).

Good episode! Very meaty. The beginning, with the French people and Jin, was very season 1-ish.

another realization i had about the show that nowie will hate ... many of the characters have extreme father issues

jack has dueling ego and alcoholism with his dad
locke's dad tried to kill him
sawyer became sawyer to avenge his dad (regarding locke's dad)
kate blew up her dad
ben killed his dad
sun now rules her father's evil empire
jin was ashamed of his dad, quasi slave to sun's
penny's dad controls the universe
desmond was temporarily controlled by penny's dad
walt's adopted dad abandoned him, and real dad was ...well, dickface michael
claire's dad abandoned her (and his jack's)
aaron's dad is missing
charlie flipped out as island dad
hurley's dad was out of the picture for years (and is cheech!)

that aside, last night's episode was good. this whole season has been really good so far. there seems to be a lot more suspension of belief in terms of the character's justifications. not so much that it doesn't feel par-for-the-course with most of the rest of the show, but it does make you sorta realize how trusting each one of these guys are to constantly just do what the last person told them to do.

still, the bits with that pendulum room and daniel's mom were pretty cool. any guesses as to what happened on the plane? im assuming the plane got them close, and then there was one of those flashes, and then only people who were on the island already were taken through the time warp thing... but i dunno. the camera panned a little too much on that one indian guy who wished jack condolences, so maybe he got there, as well.

The previews seem to indicate that the cop handcuffed to Sayid is now on the island. Therefore, it seems possible that the Indian guy might be there too.

I'm guessing the flash transported them, as opposed to crashing the plane. Didn't the plane crash last time because Desmond hadn't pushed the button at the right time or something?

BTW, speaking of Desmond, you don't supposed Ben's "loose end" was killing Penny (as he threatened to Whidmore) before heading back to the Island do you? If so, that would explain why Desmond goes back.

That would royally suck if true, by the way. The Desmond/Penny thing was the one part of the show I was really hoping had come/would come to a happy ending.

penny also has amazing tits. losing those would be horrible.

one relating question: ben threatened to kill whitmore's daughter because whitmore had ben's killed. ...except we found out a few weeks ago that ben is not the father of the chick he refers to as his daughter ...whose name i currently forget (alexandra?).

perhaps that is how whitmore got around the "rules" of not being allowed to kill ben's kid

We've known for quite a long time that Alexandra wasn't Ben's kid. Ben stole her from Rosseau, not unlike how the Others tried to steal Walt from Michael. But Ben raised her and always thought of her as his adopted daughter.

Early on, like the second season, Rousseau told the Oceanic survivors she was pregnant when she crashed on the island and that the others kidnapped her baby after it was born. She also mentioned having to kill her husband when he got "the sickness." All indications were that he was the baby's father, not Ben, and that Ben raised Alex after she was kidnapped. It was made pretty clear what happened all along.

Oh, and Rob, just to clear up future questions:

Jack and Claire were half-siblings, they share the same father, and Jack is Aaron's Uncle.

Kate is not Aaron's real mother. Claire is/was.

Claire and Charlie were in love and Charlie acted paternally toward baby Aaron, but Charlie was not Aaron's real dad. A guy named Thomas is/was.

Michael was Walt's dad. Walt's mom was dead. Michael is probably now also dead and Walt lives with his grandmother. Despite spending some time with the Others he is unrelated to Ben.

I'm still sticking with my prediction that Sun and Jin won't see each other until the end of this season at the earliest.

Increasingly a safe prediction. Jin's apparently stuck in the past and, for all we know, Sun is in the "present."

Why? So far all time-jumping groups do so together. So if Jack, Kate and Hurley are ended up in the past, so should Sun and all the rest.

Jin could be in the present. He finds the van, gets it running, puts on some old Dharma clothes for something clean to wear, and drives around the Island for who knows how long.

And she/they might be. But we don't know exactly how the time slips work or don't work so "for all we know," the people on the plane aren't bound by the same rules as the people on the island.

Possible. But both the van and the uniform looked new.
