Wait, Heath Ledger is dead? Then how'd he accept his award?

You said you were glad Penn won even though you haven't seen the film. You expressed an opinion as to whether he deserved the reward without viewing the movie. How is that different than what you questioned BSAMS on?
There was no presumptioun that bsams was wrong for having an opinion on Penn winning. As for me, apparently I'm less emotionally invested in who won best actor than some people. When you threw a very ugly hissy fit when Penn won, I commented that I was glad he won. The comment wasn't based on his performance or if he deserved it or not.

Ledger obviously won because of a sympathy vote. Not that it wasn't a great performance, but superhero flicks and comedies never get their due. The absence of TDK as a best picture nominee is further proof his death led to the nomination and win. There is some truth to the sympathy vote suspicion, but its also fair to give the man his due - it was a great performance. I think there is something too to the thought that his depression, leading to the pills and his death, were linked to his utter submersion in the role. He didn't quite die for his art, but his method acting was such that it potentially unbalanced him. Ledger had no signs of depression or mental illness that I've heard of prior to taking on the role of the Joker. The Academy seemed to recognise that his acting method consumed him and contributed to his death. Whether the Oscar was a form of odd approval of his committment to the role I'm not quite sure. Ledger is from Perth and so all the shit media outlets here have been going on about "Perth's Oscar". I find that offensive in way which is hard to articulate.

My point was had he not died the academy would not have gave him a whiff. They don't normally give big awards to superhero movies or comedies.

Bill Maher could be the biggest piece of shit on this earth. I thought he was too busy trying to promote his own documentary. Jackman's performance got panned in many newspapers today. "Cruise ship entertainment". Heh. I thought it was old school and good. As for Penn, I haven't seen Milk, and probably won't. But its like the Pulitzers with Michael Chambon with Cavalier and Clay : write about homosexuality and Jewish issues to a selection committee of homosexuals and Jews and you're going to get a sympathetic audience who relate to the content. The entertainment industry for a variety of reasons attracts gays. No matter how good Milk actually is or is not, a big chunk of the Academy are going to relate to the pro-gay sentiment of the movie. As for Penn himself, I'm not very familiar with his body of work, other than Dead Man Walking, in which he was utterly brilliant. (only a really good actor could extract from an audience sympathy for an ignorant multiple rapist/murderer. The scene where Penn's character is tied and readied for lethal injection, and he is shaking like a dog through sheer fear of death, is really something to watch. I used to be in favour of the death penalty before I watched that movie.) But there was one scene from Milk broadcast on the Awards night where Penn is standing and exhorting a crowd. He throws his arms up, smiling, and his wrists are bent out. My gaydar went into alert. I'm guessing he is a very capable and adaptable actor. Personally, I'm disappointed that Death Race didn't get a nomination. That girl in it was hawt.

I think a rapist murderer deserves to shake like a dog in fear. You reap what you sow. I'm surprised that you would fall for that.

I even think a murderer deserves to die. But I don't think society should put itself in the exact same position as a murderer, killing a man - any man - in cold blood and taking him to his death while he shakes and pisses himself. Its sociopathic. In any event, that's a discussion for another place.

Can we all at least agree that Tyler Perry sucks ass on every conceivable level, and that his "movies" are racist, sexist, preachy tripe? But that calling it tripe insults tripe?

The Pineapple Express skit was hilarious when they were watching The Love Guru with Mike Myers and Franco says" man this slumdog millionaire is a great movie."

They couldn't get someone better to present??? I would have been happy with Michael Moore or Al Gore. I don't like Penn's politics but he is a very good actor. Mystic River is one of my favorite movies.......modern greek tragedy. I'm one of those guys that would have liked Richard Jenkins win. Penn won one already. Pitt will get more chances.

I think he doesn't deserve to be even talked about. And yet, instead of just saying "I concur" and leaving it at that, you choose to voice an opinion about him, thus talking about him.
