I wish the actress who played Julia wasn't going to be doing something different next year. She was one of my favorites.

Yeah...the theory. Funny how it took Miles to point out that maybe Jack was actually going to cause the incident by nuking the hatch.

In any event as MEM points out Juliets signed for a different series next year. So unfortunately she's probably dead.

maybe.

but lost has a pretty unique (easy?) filming schedule. its possible she could work them both, and/or serve in a reduced capacity. ...titty...

Rose and Bernard were the best part of this episode. I thought the second half was somewhat lacking.

Are we supposed to get upset about someone dying when the whole thing was reset?

I'm still far from convinced the reset occurred. For the entire season, the theme was "you can't change the past" until very recently when Faraday (who has a history of mental health issues) suddenly shows up and spouts some half-assed theory that "people are the variable." Why keep hitting us with that (including after he's dead through Miles' warning; see comment above) if that wasn't case?

Two theories:
  • 1. Faraday missed one calculation, namely, that Desmond wasn't there.
    • a. Old Eloise was pretty insistent that everyone would have to return to the island to insure things worked. What if "everyone" included Desmond?

      b. Faraday himself had said that Desmond was the one guy who seemed to have the power to change the past. He said that Desmond was HIS constant.
      c. What if Faraday's plan only worked if Desmond was the guy who tossed the bomb down the hatch?
  • 2. Faraday knew it would never work, knew he would die in the past, and this was his way to "trick" the Losties into doing what history required them to do.

By the way, I couldn't tell, but it almost looked to me that Jacob was in the background of the 1977 Dharma pic with Jack, Kate, et al. Anyone have a screen cap of that pic?

i was met with a bunch of "i told you so"s and "i knew it"s this afternoon, as some people saw one of their predictions come true. which is very annoying, because really no one knew anything, they were just making random, speculative guesses based on nothing.

but... i guess that's one of the joys of the show. i get sucked into it myself. towards the end of the finale, i was feeling somewhat justified in my guess that locke was dead, particularly after they kept highlighting ben saying he had to be. ...only to then realize that was one correct guess out of one-thousand incorrect guesses, ...and then that even the "correctness" of the guess is pretty off, since i had no idea how the "death" was going to come about.

really, the show continues to prove itself as almost entirely unpredictable. as soon as you think you figure them out living on the island, there's a monster. as soon as you think you know what the monster is, there's a hatch. then the others live on a nearby island. then the flash backs become flash forwards. then they travel through time. now, there's a jesusy white shirt guy and a ...richard hatchy black shirt devil guy fighting some sorta weird ages-long chess match.

aweshome.

The brainwashing video has the words
"Only fools are enslaved by time and space"

which is an anagram for
"bones of Nadlers may lay lost deep in cave" ,

rose and bernard last names are nadler.

Got that from another site. Guess that means that was their last story.

again, all "in theory".

they, along with juliet and everyone else could appear again (and again) depending on how the stories plays out with the explosion. we could see a lot of events repeating. or, things playing out in an entirely different fashion, only to realign the way they did. either way, its just as likely to expect to see them again (and ecko and charlie and michael) as it is to not see them.

Rose and Bernard were, I'd guess, at least 65 years old when the plane crashed. If they were sent back to 1974, by 2004 (when the bones of Adam and Eve were found in the cave) they would have been at least 95.

Therefore, there's a good chance they died of old age in the past. Which really, given how happy they were on the island, isn't a bad way to end their story.

One of my theories about the show is that things were supposed to go a certain way but Ben kept interrupting it and doing things the way he wanted them to happen. Him turning the frozen donkey wheel instead of Locke is a great example of this. I think if they did change the past the plane would still crash (which ben had nothing to do with?) and things would get done the way then were supposed to. That could be the plot of season six.

The very short teaser they showed for season six was the shot of jack lying in the jungle which might mean this is how the final season will open. That might mean my prediction will come true.

More likely Jack's lying in the jungle because they're back on the island in the present and the only thing "changed" is that fact.

so, ok, how about ...this:

the smoke monsters is the devil guy. he's spooky, makes a weird accounting machine noise, and likes to drag people to their death. he has the ability to manifest himself as other people, as long as their bodies are on the island (jack's dad, ecko's brother, horace, etc).

his goal the whole time is to find a loophole to kill his brother (?) jacob, which for whatever reason he can't do himself. so, in smoke form, he has "scanned" others on the island looking for a way to do so. he scanned ecko, saw that this was a truly apologetic, repentant christian guy, and just flat out killed him. he saw / scanned locke, recognized that it was a guy who could be manipulated (by his father, by ben, etc), and saved that note for later. he scanned ben, saw that ben was an evil, squirrely kinda guy (with giant bug eyes) and found in him a murderer. he manifested as ben's daughter alex (also on the island) and told ben to listen to whatever "john locke" said.

every time we saw "jacob" in the cabin, we actually saw the devil guy. sometimes, he was already manifested as christian -- the same form that convinced locke to leave the island and be killed. and we saw the "note" from the actual jacob on the wall of the cabin last week, indicating jacob had left to lie "in the shadow of the statue".

locke's body returns, smokey takes over. smokey manifests as alex, telling ben to listen to locke. locke tells ben to kill jacob. loophole found.

the others are the good guys, and have always been (they keep saying it!). ben may have been a shit, but the rest are good. at some point, the "tribes" fragmented, with ben's group being lead by a false jacob (devil guy), and the others (like elan) knowing the true whereabouts of jacob. richard may have been the cause of this, when he left the island to look for locke. together, the others are the disciples, and richard alpert's job is to continually (jack) sheppard them. jacob brought alpert to the island via the black rock to fill this role.

their language is latin, as evidenced by juliet - and later alpert, when he respond's to elan's question about who lives in the shadow of the statue; "he (jacob) who will save us all."

on the beach, the devil guy tells jacob that "it always ends the same" -- a potential reference to time (travel) looping over and over, where the outcome is always the same. jacob responds that it "only ends once; everything else is progress" -- potentially meaning that they make slight advancements to finding a way for peace every time, before "hitting the reset". he visits the characters in their past, setting them on their paths -- moving the pieces of the "chess game."

daniel's theory was correct; little changes don't impact time, but large ones could. however, his "blow up the island" theory wasn't big enough. killing a god, however, could be.

enter next season where basically the same situations will happen, only perhaps taking slightly different paths on the way to achieving peace -- a montage of everything that happened in the previous 5, but with different (better?) results. and perhaps the only way any of this would have ever come about is by jacob recognizing he had to be killed to inspire it. their plane still crashes on the island, and jack wakes up in the forest. as shown in the split-second preview for next season.

Another possibility I've been thinking of: Jack wakes up in the present, in the island, and thinks "oh well, nothing changed. Carry on." Then, somehow, they find out there's a Jack Sheppard living in the US and making tea as if nothing happened. So the main characters are left as survivors from a defunct timeline.

One thing I've noticed about the finale is that I feel the same way about the ending as I did last years. Its hinted that they do some "game changing" change but since we don't know the outcome we don't know what to think. In some ways I think the fifth season premiere should have been the fourth season finale since we knew what the "game changer" was. They could have at least given us a hint at what next year would be like. Its not like we're gonna stop watching. Its the fucking last season.
