A Maine high school senior was denied his diploma at graduation after he took a bow when his name was called, pointed to friends and blew a kiss to his family.

Justin Denney was graduating from Bonny Eagle High School June 12 and had gotten up on stage to receive his diploma when he gestured to his friends and relatives.

School Superintendent Suzanne Lukas abruptly told Denney to return to his seat, according to WMTW TV in Maine. He didn't get his diploma.

His mother, Mary Denney, is livid. Her son told her that the superintendent warned, "There's no fooling around up here."

"He just kind of looked at her because he wasn't fooling around. He didn't consider that fooling around or misbehaving in any sense of the word," Mary Denney told WMTW.

Lukas reportedly asked the soon-to-be graduate why he thought he deserved a diploma.

"He goes, 'Because I worked hard and I earned it,' and she goes, 'No, go take your seat,'" his mother told the station.

Other students also walked away empty-handed because of various disruptions during the ceremony. Some started playing with beach balls and others were separated from their friends, according to WMTW.

Mary Denney doesn't believe her son violated any code of conduct.

"There was no misbehavior. Showboating is not misbehavior," she told the station. "A bow, a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior."

The angry mother said she wants Lukas to apologize to her son and present him with his diploma while he is in his cap and gown.

And to answer your somewhat rhetorical question, it started with political correctness and reached a fever pitch after 9/11.

I don't see how it had anything to do with 9/11 except the timing is similar.

Bottom line is that we're in at least the second generation of school kids brought up on PC bullshit. And a lot of the people running schools (and other institutions) are from the first generation that was immersed in it.

In Las Vegas, story comments that were perceived as threats have led federal prosecutors to demand that the newspaper there — the Las Vegas Review-Journal — turn over the names of people who posted. Authorities also want to know the writers’ gender, birth date, physical address, telephone number, Internet service provider, IP address, credit card numbers and more.

Prosecutors are demanding the information through a federal grand jury subpoena. The newspaper is resisting the subpoena, and the ACLU posted beneath the story an offer to help readers who feel threatened by the demands.

An article on the Review-Journal’s online site says:

Editor Thomas Mitchell said the paper is resisting the sweeping nature of the subpoena, noting that anonymous speech is “a fundamental and historic part of this country,” citing the Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers that argued for passage and against passage of the nation’s Constitution as an example. All were written under pseudonyms. He said the paper would consider cooperating if specific crimes or real threats were presented.

The story comments were in reaction to a criminal tax case. The Review-Journal article describes the allegations:

Las Vegas business owner Robert Kahre and others face federal tax fraud charges for paying contractors with gold and silver U.S. coins based on the precious metal value of the coins but using the much lower face value of the coins for tax purposes.

The Review-Journal article says:

The newspaper’s subpoena does not explain why the U.S. attorney’s office wants to know who commented on the case, but prosecutors told federal Judge David Ezra that they issued it out of concern for jurors’ safety, because some comments hinted at acts of violence.

The article cites this example:

One commentator said, “The sad thing is there are 12 dummies on the jury who will convict him. They should be hung along with the feds.”
