I got this for cheap.
I enjoyed the documentary, Superstar was pretty candid.
But I don't really have much reference to go on as when I started to watch wrestling, he was at the end of his career - he could barely walk to the ring! In fact I saw him wrestle 2 jobbers before he became a commentator and Don Muracos manager.
Superstar was pretty bitter at having the title taken from him because he felt he was really getting over and from the matches included - he certainly had the fan support even though he was a heel and back then, you were supposed to hate the heels!
It was shocking and no mention is made to his Kung Fu look when he returned over a year after dropping the world belt - he was so out of shape.
There's an excellent match with Dusty Rhodes included in the extras!
It's well worth a watch!

I also caught Billy at the end of his career. I always thought he was a mix of Jesse Ventura and Hulk Hogan years later I read interviews with Hogan and Ventura crediting Billy as an influence. Though Jesse I think claims Hogan ripped him off.

He looked fucking ancient when I started watching - I thought he was a poor mans hogan! The did use to make mention that he was a former world champion - I couldn;t imagine it at the time.
He sort of did a Flair aging thing - looked the same for most of his life and then became an old man in the space of a few years!

I used to read wrestling magazines like crazy when I was a kid so I read about him well before I saw him wrestle. The way the magazines portrayed him he was a wrestling god, so i think that influenced my perception even when i did see him wrestle.

pick up his book as well, if you can find it. he goes into a lot more detail about the karate look and the mental state he'd gone into. he also talks a bit about his return back to the old look and persona some. I wish they'd covered that on the dvd.
I kinda liked his shot at Hogan on one of the Crockett promos. "It's like Coca Cola, baby, the people want the real thing!" funny. that would've been an interesting confrontation if they could've pulled it off.

Those magazines were hard as fuck to get over here but when I saw them I would pick them up - it's how I followed NWA at the time. I used to love these magazine because of the old photos and history. This was at the time the WWF didn't acknowledge anything more then a few months old. It was cool to learn where people had wrestled before - I remember Dusty Rhodes joing the WWF, everyone I went to school thought he was some fatass gaylord until I showed photos from his NWA days of him bleeding all over the shop. Superstar at the time I was watching was some old due shuffling to the ring - to see the pics in his heyday _ I couldn;t believe it was the same man!

I think they went along with him in the hopes that it would snap him out of his funk.

Some of the Rock's promos for that were great. "You're walking down the Hulka-street, eating a Hulka-sandwich!"

hogan had a few good matches of course you would say that no no, for real. obviously, much were poo, but at least they generally told the in-ring "story". however, there were a few that i thought were actually very well done. except WM vs the Rock, i still hate Hogan for making me like that match. that was one of them. especially considering hogan was 100 and i think i recall he broke a rib or something a few weeks earlier, but still put on a great show for the mania crowd. probably the most into a match i've ever seen with a live audience

He was also trying to Carradine from Kung fu! I never saw any real pictures of the Karate ere of Superstar but seeing him in action on the dvd was a shocker - he was unrecogniseable! Going back to the dvd, I did like how candid he was about losing the title - he was quite bitter.

he really was. it affected him a lot. he was enjoying being the champion and feeling the electricity from the fans and was really making a case to Senior to let him keep the belt and build on what they had and eventually turn face. when he lost, it affected him as if he'd lost a "real" championship.

The crowd was turning him face - that was almost unheard of in the day!
I think in hindsight, that should have kept the title on him!
But then we don't really know whether or not they took the title off of him because of his drug use - maybe they were worried already!

I don't think the drug use was an issue at that time, mainly because I believe they were still legal and the side effects were not well known back then. iirc, it wasn't really for another seven, eight years or so that they became illegal and the general public and all really began to know about what effects steroid abuse would bring. it's almost an expected quote now by athletes from the 70's and early 80's "yeah, but I took them when they were legal!"
pretty much everything I've seen and read about the switch says simply that Senior had already given his word to Backlund that he'd win the title. but I agree, I think they should've left it on Graham and run with it.

I know a lot of people have axes to grind with Vince, but Billy always seems to have an axe to grind with someone, and seems somewhat petty. (is this something else Hogan stole from him?) - In the wake of his WWE release, Hall of Famer Superstar Billy Graham, seemingly upset with WWE, is parting ways with his Hall of Fame ring. Graham, real name Eldridge Wayne Coleman, told the UK Sun that years of misinformation about the significance of the Hall of Fame contributed to his frustration. He noted that despite Shane McMahon's years of talk regarding building a physical WWE Hall of Fame, Vince McMahon recently threw that out the window.
"Vince McMahon made a remark at a recent Board meeting that there will never be an actual Hall of Fame building and that the Hall of Fame is something that only exists in his head," said Graham. "Therefore, if the Hall of Fame is only a figment of Vince's imagination, I will depart with my ring."
The Sun labeled Graham "furious" with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon; Graham said he is not sentimental about the wrestling business. The current eBay bid on the ring is $8,100; Graham received notice that he would be released from his consultant contract earlier this year. It expires this month. The guy is contradicting himself. He claims that he is getting rid of the ring because Vince wont build an actual hall of fame, then claims he isnt sentimental about the business. If he isnt sentimental about the business, why does it bother him so much that Vince wont have an actual building built to honour the business? Sounds more a case of he is just pissed off cause they decided to let him go. In a few months time, if Vince offered him a new contract, he would probably take his hand off in accepting it.

None of the moves were that awesome but the way Rock and Hogan played each other and the crowd it was one of my favorite matches ever.

Whichever it is, its still basically a guy who is upset that he has been let go, and probably needs the money.
I think selling the ring just because there is no physical hall of fame is a pretty silly reason. I dont think anyone has ever thought that Vince would build an actual, physical hall of fame.
And how would building it make Vince any more or less sentimental? If Vince builds one, it would be because he could make money from it.

I think the face reaction for Hogan was expected. It was always hard for WWF/WWE fans to accept him as a heel, but was a natural heel in WCW as he was always seen as a WWF guy. When he came back to WWE as a heel, I dont think WWE fans fully accepted the heel factor, and all expected a face turn at some point soon.
I just dont think they expected it there and then.

I don't think the drug use was an issue at that time, mainly because I believe they were still legal and the side effects were not well known back then. I was just thinking that some one so jacked up might be having extreme mood swings, hence taking the belt off of him - even though they may not have known of the side effects, they just thought he was an arsehole! I guess we will never know because none of us were there to see how over he was!

He was one of the guys who set things in motion for steroid investigation of Vince.

According to Stephanie, the steroid investigation was comparable in villainy to the 9/11 attacks.

yes. So did I. That's excellent booking and talent to the wrestlers involved when you know that the Rock has to go over but you start thinking that Huckster might do it. What other times you can you think of this happening? Most recently was this years No Way Out - Edge loses his Championship in his elimination chamber! He sneaks into the other elimination chamber match and is natch to win it but the last part of the match between him and Rey Mysterio - I really really thought Mysterio was going to win! Another question - what matches did you watch, that you had absolutely no idea who was going to win?
