Mr Perfect Curt Hennig deserved a much better DVD then this.

I was really looking forward to this release, hoping to reminisce about late 80s/early 90s WWF and one of its top stars at the time.

First of all, the documentary, whilst enjoyable, is only 70 minutes long! It barely scratches the surface of Hennigs career and the talking heads apart from Larry Hennig and his wife & Son, are pointless. Where was Shawn Michaels? They were both in the AWA and WWF together at the same time. The most interesting thing throughout the documentary, is the restoration of Wade Boggs hairline.

I really feel they could have gone into much more detail about both Hennigs AWA and WWF careers! It's not even mentioned that he retired Flair from the WWF!

But my biggest bone of contention are the matches! There's an interesting early WWF match between Hennig and the late Eddie Gilbert - this is from a tryout Hennig had with the WWF in the early 80s.

Another interesting Bout is Henning & Scott Hall Vs Steve Regal(not THE William Regal) and & Jimmy Garvin - it is notable for how unrecognisable Hall looks, 20 pounds of extra muscle, tight perm and Magnum moustache. It's also interesting to see Hennig do all the work and Hall just come in at the end - he must have been useless back then. I always found it disappointing that Hall didn't go further - he was a far better worker then Nash but got none of the glory he did!

Hennigs classic 60 minute draw with Nick Bockwinkel is next - great match, even by todays standards. Best Match of the whole DVD!

My thoughts on these tribute DVDs is that they should showcase their subject, so I can't understand the inclusion of the rest of these matches. In 1988/1989, to build Hennig up, they had him beat a lot of mid-carders - to my mind, Hennigs scraps with Bret Hart, Tito Santana and the Rockers(in singles matches) were the best thing WWF was putting out.

So, I was annoyed at seeing the Wrestlefest 88 bout with Terry Taylor and especially the 1989 MSG bout with Bret Hart. This is a Mr Perfect DVD, Hennig beat Hart countless times in 88/89 - why put this time limit draw?

Hennigs feud with Hogan had to be covered so I was both happy for this match to be included and it's result!

A Worthless match with Kerry Von Erich is next - why didn't they include the match were Perfect regained the Intercontinental title instead of this one?

Bret Harts IC win is next - second best match of the DVD and rightfully included! But why include this loss without including Perfects Intercontinental tournament win?

Shawn Michaels/Perfects Summerslam 93 crapfest is next - again why include this match when they had some great matches in the late 80s.

And finally a WCW Hart/Hennig match - crap.

There are so many matches they could have included so it beggars belief that they went with most of the matches included. I would have included Hennigs first IC TV defence with Tito Santana on Saturday Nights Main Event.

How he won the Title in the tournament - his 2 wins and elimination of main competition Brutus Beefcake.

Regaining the title from Kerry Von Erich.

Perfect/Randy Savage Vs Flair/Razor Ramon(Scott Hall)

Perfect forcing Ric Flair to leave WWF on RAW.

Also, Perfect was known as a prankster, I think they could have gone into more details of some of his pranks - there's a classic Ultimate Warrior story.

Hopefully they will do another DVD with a better choice of matches.

RECTUM!

Damn, they didn't have the match with him and his dad vs I think the Road Warriors where Kurt got his head stuck in the ropes and took the chairshot?

His hair turned blood red instantly.

It was the most blood I remember seeing in a match until Beulah opened up Bill Alfonso.

Nope, that match isn't there!

Looking at the matchlist for the upcoming best of Saturday nights main event - the Perfect/Santana match is there.

There was also a great Demolition/Rockers match on that show.

The most blood I saw in a match was Muta/Muto in some Japanese match - the blood was flowing out of the ring.

I think one of the problems with WWE DVDs is that they are trying to put as few of the same matches on different collections as possible.

For instance, if they include a match between Perfect and Flair of Flairs DVD, they will do their best to not include it on the Perfect DVD.

Sometimes this means that a performers best matches will already have appeared elsewhere by the time their DVD is released, and the DVD loses something by not having it.

Its all well and good if you buy all the DVDs, or have bought those that have the matches on it you wanted, but if the match is on a DVD by a performer you dislike, then you could end up missing it because of that.

Agreed.

To WWEs credit, they will put real classics(Razor/HBGays first ladder match, the Tables/Ladders/Chairs matches with the Hardys, Edge, Christian and Dudleys) on a few different dvds!

Perfects IC loss to Hart is on few different dvds.

My main problem with the Perfect DVD is the lack of AWA matches - there's not been many released in the past so I don't see the problem there! The match Jaburg mentions is possibly on the Legion Of Doom DVD!

And, the lack of early WWE matches, his matches with a Rockers Shawn Michaels was superb! Plus in almost every feature match of the day, Perfect would be beating Santana!

I think its good that they want to minimize repetition, as lets face it, if you buy a lot of these DVDs, you dont want the same match over and over again, but when its something that contains two (or more) wrestlers that are worthy of their own DVD, its a crime to miss it off of anyone elses if its that good a match.

If its a match against someone who is likely to never get their own DVD, then its not an issue, but if it involves some big names, then its gonna be annoying if its excluded from one persons DVD over another.

I think some matches just have to be included on both wrestlers DVDs or have to appear on a specialist DVD (like one devoted to TLC or cage matches for example).
I mean, if you include the Savage/Dragon WM3 match on the Savage DVD, how could they not include it on a Dragon DVD if they ever did one?

Sorry.

But there was a Hennigs/Road Warriors match on that dvd, just not a very good one!

I was reading some wrestling rag, they mentioned that WWE doesn't include many 'bloody' matches on their dvd releases because they want to get a lower age rating!

Wouldnt surprise me with the DVDs, as they are pushing for PG rated tv in the US at the moment, so it makes sense (sorta) that they would transfer that to the DVDs.

I think WWE have got it right so far - they haven't doubled any shitty matches although some of their choices have been suspect! On the Perfect dvd, there's a real stinker WCW match with Hart - I'm sad to say that both were Hennig & Hart were pretty broken down at the time.

Thank you Tito Santana! But I haven't seen any of the great matches he had with Shawn Michaels on the numerous HBGay releases!

As I say, WWE have done a pretty good job of knowing what matches are worth putting on more than one dvd!

From what I can gather, they talk to a lot of staff and WWE talent (and in most cases, the subject of the DVD) to get their choices on what should and shouldnt be included, so it seems they are at least trying to get a broad spectrum of opinions before deciding a match listing.

Which is good and bad!

It's great that they get a lot of different opinions!

It's bad that they are picking such lousy matches!

Yeah, well what happens is you get someone who is a fan of someone shit, so of course they pick a shitty match.

I mean, nobody needs to see Hogan matches, even on a Hogan DVD!

I rewatched the dvd.

I felt quite sad when Hennigs wife reflected on him returning to the WWE.

She said he knew he was only being employed to elevate others, that there would be no headlining anymore - not that he had a problem with it.

I was thinking it was such a waste.

They also did that with Superfly Jimmy Snuka. He came back to much fanfare at Wrestlemania 5 and then was putting others over almost immediately!

WCW really missed the boat on him as well. They really coulda went somewhere with the Horsemen vs nWo if they hadnt had him turn on Flair. Even if you do have him turn on Flair you should build it for months with missed tags, being late for the save ect. I believe they did the whole angle in 3 weeks!

We got to see Henning after a Nitro in Biloxi. We'd wound up at the same casino that the wrestlers were staying at after the show. He was just sitting at the bar drinking and looking like a sad sack. This was after he'd been taken off of TV and he didn't look to happy about that. He snubbed a friend who tried to shake his hand and told him how big a fan he was. It was pretty depressing to see, actually.

They should have just ran with Hennig being in the Horsemen!

The NWO were long over - it served no purpose with him joining them.

It was not long after he formed the West Texas Redneck!

As Bsams said, they what could have been a great slow burning angle in the space of a few weeks!

It was a double whammy - because it also belittled Arn Anderson giving his place to Hennig.

I can't help but think it was petty office politics.

That is so sad.

He could still go.

As Hennigs wife said, he didn't expect to hold the World Title and didn't mind elevating others over but he was pretty over when he returned to the WWE - Would it have been so hard to keep in the upper mid card?

Wrestling has had a habit of not running with 'over' angles or wrestlers that are handed to them on a plate!

See, Eric, that's what happens when you spend a shitload of money just so Master P's brother can have his birthday party in the middle of the ring on Nitro. The fans are going to be for the wrestlers over shithead rappers every time.

It's one of the finest examples of the fans telling the bookers what they want.

I love it when it happens!

It's particularly funny at how hard they tried to make them the heels but the fans loved them.
