I got the 2nd set of SummerSlam Anthology DVD's for 5 bucks...I was ripped off.

So many matches!

In the Starrcade thread I mention how rare it is to see a 2 out of 3 fall match end in 2 straight falls - there's another here!

DVD also includes the classic Perfect/Santana match I've been wanting to see for a very long time - it's good but not quite as good as I remembered! I remember it being a lot closer!

Summerslam 88 and 89 are 2 of my all time favourite classics!

What were some of the matches on the set you got?

I watched a few on the first disc...IRS vs the 1-2-3 Kid, Bret Hart vs Doink (who can actually wrestle, despite the gimmick) The Million Dollar Man vs Razor Ramon, just dreadful matches. Vince on commentary takes the cake. Good FUCKING grief did he suck. Luger vs Yokozana...Luger wins by countout, and he celebrates like he won the title. Horrible stuff all around. That's just the 1st disc.

I moved on to the last disc...it got better, but WWE was so lame and cheesy back then.

The 1-2-3 Kid was on a winning streak after beating Razor Ramon and the Million Dollar Man! He then gets beaten fairly easily by IRS! X-Pac must have been a bad boy even back then!

But that is the biggest WTF, Lugers count out win over Yokozuna! With all the faces coming down and carrying him around as if he's won the belt! What happened behind the scenes to make this happen? Surely Luger was supposed to win the title?

Lawler and Hart did face each other after the Doink match. Hart made him quit, wouldn't release the hold, and then lost by DQ for failing to break after the match.

Very bad execution on that one. Lawler quits, and practically every ref and backstage "professional" (Patterson, etc) storms the ring and tries to convince Hart to let Lawler go. So they all stand there, pleading with Hart. And then they argue with each other. Instead of the 10-12 fuckheads getting together and pulling him off, they stand around and argue. All the while, Vince is screaming into the mic. Also during the match, the camera shows Owen and Bruce Hart, who are overacting all they can. Owen looks rough with his mullet.

Rumor has it, that Luger was supposed to win the belt...but he got hammered at a bar before the match, and ran his mouth about how he was going to be champ. That ruined it. He was then slated to drop the belt to Ludwig Borga of all people, but Luger's big mouth forced a change of plan...which then led to Bret becoming champ.

As a kid I remebered Lawler being a great wrestler, butbut when I've watched old matches he hardly rates compared to the greats. He was a good mic man but thats it.

I think he sucks even worse on the mic. I understand he's a moron in real life, but his "Curly" voice overdoes it...

That Ludwig Borga was a piece of work! WWF really did get behind the wrong guy a few times, Borga, Nailz....

You know I saw Borga boxing a few years ago - he was useless at that also.

You'd think they would have learned with Borga, Vladimir Kozlov proves that they didn't!

You know, I noticed the same thing about Dusty Rhodes.

I always used to think Dusty Rhodes could work and carry a match, like you, on watching his stuff recently, I realised he was a lot more out of shape than I remembered. The Starrcade dvd showed a lot of Dustys lack of talent, his team up with Sting against the Road Warriors was interesting in that Dusty is hardly in the ring, leaving Sting to do almost everything!

He was particularly useless in his WWF run!

In 1998 I went to my uncle's in Florida, I believe it was shortly after Dusty's polka dot WWF run, I thought him a joke at this time, but watching local tv he was a god to those people down there. he was on car dealership commercials, the local news would do features on him. he was drawing thousands to indy shows.

There's 2 battle Royals, I remember who won the latter but I had no idea who won the earlier one! Whilst watching it, all the guys I thought could win it, were eliminated!

Do you remember a WWF show that was on tape called The Wrestling Classic? I had given up hope at the time of any of my favorites winning because it seemed like only a few select guys won anything. I was surprised and excited when JYD won the tournament! this has nothing to do with this thread but I don't process thoughts coherently!

it was an early ppv, wasn't it? I came across a vhs copy years ago when I lived in Mobile. the movie gallery there had an amazing selection of old WWF tapes. they had that as well as the Hart Foundation tape, the Piper tape, etc. great stuff.

I remember watching a bootleg of this nearly 20 years ago! I was pretty amazed at how well Dynamite did!

It's cool when you don't know what's going to happen! The first elimination chamber match at No Way Out 2009 was the first time in a long while I had no idea who was going to win!

The oldest tape I have is the British Bulldogs one!

Savage was so quick in his prime. When these guys hang around until they are dead it really does cloud your memory of them.

I don't agree...I haven't seen much of a drop in Hogan's in-ring work in the last 20 years...

don't think I've seen that! most of what I have seen is ppv stuff, which was uneven depending on their opponents. they should really do a Bulldogs dvd. they have so much stuff in their vaults.
