blackberry's standardized the modern notion of "smartphone" ...said notion is typically associated with devices where "phone calls" are not the primary use Where I think we disagree is on whether "phone calls" are still the primary use for a "smartphone." I won't repeat my earlier points in detail, or those of Nowie with which I agree. However, I will reinterate my earlier point that even people who own smartphones do so because they want a phone. For example, an iPod touch is essentially the same device as an iPhone without the phone feature. Apps, etc., can be downloaded using the Wi-fi feature. If people had little use for the "phone" aspect of iPhone, why aren't more people buying the iPod touch and skipping the data plan?

it's like, you're not purchasing a gadget, man. You're defining who you are, as a person. It's like, this is me, and I'm an Apple user. Who are you, as a person?

Where I think we disagree is on whether "phone calls" are still the primary use for a "smartphone." disagreement noted! even people who own smartphones do so because they want a phone. agreement noted! If people had little use for the "phone" aspect of iPhone, why aren't more people buying the iPod touch and skipping the data plan? my response is that the act of "communication" (which i feel is the priority) is the better definition of primary usage. phone calls are part of that; but just part. texting, emails, facebook status updates, photo sharing, trading high scores, video chat, etc. all rely on that data plan connection for "everywhere" use. an itouch can only do some of those things, and even then, can only do them with access to wifi - typically, at home. this is why you see great success in the large ipad's 3G model -- it's a giant iphone without phone-talking capabilities, but the data plan allows you to have access to everything else.

Fair enough. But in my experience, if a device doesn't work as a basic phone then its data transmission is even worse.

But in my experience, if a device doesn't work as a basic phone then its data transmission is even worse. that's what nowie originally noted, as well. my response to that is that phone calls require constant, good-or-better connections to be useful. emails, texts, status updates, etc, etc, require intermittent bursts, at best, to send and/or receive the data since, by nature, there's no steady stream required. bringing it all back to the original point, this is likely the reason why i think many iphone users wouldn't even notice potentially poor-er phone quality in the new one, since they've already largely written it off.

I got a cheaper bare bones phone from metropcs. metro has issues but its a flat rate for unlimited service. I refused to sign the contract that charges ass rape fees for shit service.

iPhone reception woes not just software glitch: Too bad there’s not an app for dealing with bad publicity. Techno giant Apple continued to blame a software glitch for the iPhone 4’s sketchy signal strength, but a leading consumer publication said the company’s explanation could be all talk.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/12/apple-deleting-mentions-of-consumer-reports-iphone-4-piece-on-f/Cellphones Apple deleting mentions of Consumer Reports' iPhone 4 piece on forums, can't delete your thoughts...or can they? In case Apple has somehow managed to perfect the art of selective disremembrance across a wide population, here's a refresher: Consumer Reports has thrown down the gauntlet, stating that it "can't recommend" the iPhone 4 until the antenna issues are fixed, issues that its labs and ours have verified quite substantially. Apple apparently isn't happy about that, and has taken to deleting threads about the Consumer Reports article from its support forums. Now, Apple deleting threads from its support forums is nothing new; outside of "regular" moderation, the company routinely deletes discussion of hardware flaws that it's not ready to 'fess up to, or just generally negative lines of thought about its products. Good thing the internet's a big place, and if Apple's not going to admit the antenna issue, there are plenty of ways to gripe about it. Feel free to express yourself in the comments below, for instance!

Apple's antenna expert warned of iPhone 4 reception problems: Apple Inc. may have known more about the iPhone 4’s reception problems than it let on. The company’s senior antenna expert told CEO Steve Jobs that the phone’s design could cause dropped calls

Newer versions of the Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch being exploited to obtain personal data: Criminals could potentially spy on passwords, planners, photos, text messages, emails and built-in cameras, and even listen in to phone conversations, tech experts said.

Not much we didn't already know though I am psyched that the iPhone is getting the Netflix app soon. That was some good news! The app is out now, works perfectly.
