O'Brien confirmed Monday that Weinberg won't be joining him on "Conan," his new late-night program set to debut in November. Weinberg had been O'Brien's musical sidekick for 17 years, on both "Late Night" and the "Tonight Show."
"Max has been a huge part of my life for the past 17 years and he is an incredible band leader and musician," O'Brien said in a statement. "I hope he can find time to stop by the show, sit in with the band and pretend to find my monologue funny."
Weinberg, who's also the drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, said his time with O'Brien and crew was "a deeply rewarding experience" and that he does "look forward to dropping by."
Guitarist Jimmy Vivino will take over as bandleader, a "Conan" spokesman said. Vivino is a longtime member of the band, which was previously named "The Max Weinberg 7" and later "Max Weinberg and the Tonight Show Band." A new name hasn't yet been announced.

You could kind of tell Max was letting go of the show by the time they moved to The Tonight Show. I think he either wants more money, or just needs to move on to other things...

You could kind of tell Max was letting go of the show by the time they moved to The Tonight Show. I think he either wants more money, or just needs to move on to other things... i think it's just the east coast / west coast thing. max is all NY / NJ, especially with bruce and that whole other job. moving to cali was rough on the whole crew, but particularly him. plus, weinberg can't stand that tupac shit.

Yeah, people have largely forgotten that Max took the Late Night gig back during the time when Bruce had broken up the E Street Band. Once he got the band back together I was surprised Max stayed with Conan as long as he did.

No way the Conan gig pays more, I read one time a fill in guitarist for Metallica was getting $10k a show. Springsteen tickets sell for a lot more than theirs usually and Max wasn't a fill in..

And: - In December (2009), the 60-year-old was ranked fourth among the top touring acts of the first decade of the 21st century, behind only the Rolling Stones, U2, and Madonna.
On tour, at least, the E Street Band is still one of the biggest acts in the world.

I believe Max might make a heftier payday with Springsteen. But, save the over-40 crowd hitting the auditoriums, Springsteen's not exactly burning up the popularity vote. But, hey, I don't really listen to modern music, anyway, so whatever...

I'm sure the Conan gig was good though. You gotta figure it helped him from digging into his savings which are likely considerable. But I'd say it has less to do with money, he is set for life and maybe didn't like the West Coast life and since he wasn't obligated to a contract decided to decline.
