It's like the Colbert/Stewart "rally to restore sanity / keep fear alive" thing.

A half-baked attempt for the Left to create its own Tea Party movement, to rally the leftie/pro-Obama forces.

Dare I say it?
It's penis-envy of the Tea Party!

Can somebody please explain what's happening to me? What are they going to do?

All I know so far is the ff:

- They are protesting
- Against wall street/bankers/corporate people

Other than that, I know nothing.

- What exactly do they want to happen?
- and how are they going to achieve it?

I mean, with the protests in here, people are always clear about what they want. It's usually to get some fucker to step down or to veto a specific tax or lower the price of a specific commodity. And they try to achieve it by inconveniencing people or stopping services that will inconvenience people until they are noticed. Also, there are times when things get violent (this is the one that's more likely to get results.)

They're protesting to protest. They're all obamanauts pissed off that obama didn't give them their pony. This is the bottom rung of society bitching that "the man" is holding them down while they're too lazy to get a job.

You want a serious answer? They made their initial list of complaints, demands. It's on page2, or on the first page of the Rob's Poli Thread in the Random Chat forum. It's a laundry list of wide complaints. I think everyone agrees they need to focus.

As far as what they hope to accomplish? Dunno. I imagine they're going to try and out-wait "The Man" and push politicians to make some consents that force the top 2% to pay their fair share of taxes. That seems to be the main complain I keep hearing. And, if they have to pick one, that's the one I'd agree with the most...

Speaking of, you do have a job, right? You're not freeloading, are you?

Top Republican: anti Wall Street protests are 'mobs'
(AFP) – 34 minutes ago
WASHINGTON — One of Washington's most powerful Republicans on Friday decried "as mobs" the anti-Wall Street protestors who have mounted growing demonstrations across America.

Eric Cantor, the leader of Republicans in the House of Representatives, commented on the protests a day after President Barack Obama said they were a symptom of public frustration with the economy and the antics of banks.

"I for one am increasingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Street and the other cities across the country," Cantor said at a Values Voter Summit of social and evangelical conservatives in Washington.

"Believe it or not, some in this town have actually condoned the pitting of Americans against Americans," Cantor said.

Thousands of anti-corporate demonstrators, who have now been joined by some trade unions have been mounting protests in lower Manhattan, where Wall Street is located, for more than two weeks.

Demonstrations have now spread to other cities, including Washington D.C.

On Thursday, Obama was asked to comment on the protests during a White House press conference, as some pundits compared the mounting demonstrations to the right-wing Tea Party movement which fired up conservative voters in 2010.

"I have seen it on TV and I think it expresses the frustration that the American people feel," Obama said of the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrations.

Obama argued that people disliked that top bankers and financial firms, which caused the crisis, were now trying to fight regulation.

"You're still seeing some of the same folks who acted irresponsibly trying to fight efforts to crack down on abusive practices that got us into this problem in the first place," he said.

"I think people are frustrated and, you know, the protesters are giving voice to a more broad based frustration about how our financial system works."

Obama argued that with his Wall Street reform bill, his administration had made serious efforts to crack down on irresponsibility in the financial sector that had helped cause the financial crisis

'Occupy Portland' protest peaceful; hundreds camping in city

Demonstrators supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement against corporate power protest Thursday, Oct. 6 2011, at Pioneer Square, in Portland, Ore. Demonstrators marched downtown Thursday afternoon, disrupting traffic and businesses.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Many of the Occupy Portland protesters are spending the night at Lownsdale and Chapman squares with the blessing of Portland police, but many said late Thursday night they may defy a morning deadline to leave.

Downtown Portland was filled with thousands of people during the day who peacefully took to the streets in the afternoon to register their displeasure at the economy and the direction of the country.

The protest may not have a definite end. Many have said they'll camp out in the city indefinitely.

In the early evening, Portland police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said police will allow protesters to camp at the squares. But, he said, they will need to leave Friday by 9 a.m. because the organizers of the Portland Marathon already have a permit for those locations.

There were still several hundred protesters in the parks as of 11 p.m. They appeared to be settling in for the night and many had set up tents.

But at about 10:15 p.m. a group of about 200 gathered for a meeting and decided they may defy the deadline. They said they are aware that this might cause a clash with police.

In the morning, the protesters said they plan to move into one block of the park instead of the two they’re in now. They insist they don’t want any trouble but want to continue their protest.

Police said they’ll make the decision whether they will arrest anyone in the morning if protesters stay past the deadline. Protesters said members of their group can make their own decision whether they will defy the deadline.

All the normal park rules will be in effect during the night, including no weapons or alcohol.

Simpson said police will be monitoring the situation all night.

It's not clear where the protesters will go after they leave Lownsdale and Chapman Square, he said.

"I think their group wants to figure that out and we're working with them to try and identify places that might be easier to work around but nothing that we’ve been told at this time."

He said the organizers worked well with police.

The Occupy Portland protesters gathered in Waterfront Park at about noon and then moved into the downtown area at 2:30 p.m.

Many in attendance said they were there to highlight the growing disparity between the richest Americans and workers as well as to register their frustration with the state of affairs in the country.

"I'm a teacher. I've been unemployed for two years," said Nancy Baker-Krofft who teaches in Salem. "I've had to go back to school to have a roof over my head. I'm sick and tired of this crap we’re getting in this country. I am a very solid citizen, very patriotic person."

"People are kind of fed up with what's going on in America," said Carl Beaulieu, who was also protesting. "I would guess that this (the protest) has many reasons for people being here. My own personal reason is I don’t like war. I want to end war."

The protest mirrors a long-running "Occupy Wall Street" protest in New York City and similar events in other US cities including Seattle and San Francisco.

By noon, it appeared that about 1,000 people had gathered with more arriving as the afternoon wore on. The Portland Police Bureau said the organizers estimated a turnout of between 4,000 and 5,000 protesters. The bureau does not normally estimate crowd numbers, Simpson said.

By 2 p.m., it appeared the crowd had grown well beyond 1,000 people in the minutes before marchers planned to move through the downtown area.

The organizers of the protest did not obtain a permit for the march and said they would stay on the sidewalks. That did not happen, but police blocked off westbound traffic on West Burnside, giving the marchers half of the road to make it down to Southwest Broadway. Many of the marchers chanted "our street!" as they walked.

It was a decision by police to give some flexibility to protesters. That flexibility likely helped keep the protest peaceful, and traffic disruptions were the only problems that stemmed from it.

Police said there were no arrests, and they said that so far they're happy at the way things have turned out.

"People were not unclear. They were able to express their view and it was a powerful organizing effort," said Portland police spokesman Lt. Robert King. "So far we think things have gone really, really well."

Portland Mayor Sam Adams greeted many of the marchers outside City Hall between two sets of meetings and thanked them for demonstrating peacefully. He then joined them for about a block before returning to City Hall, according to his office.

About an hour after the protest began, the marchers occupied Pioneer Courthouse Square for a while before resuming onto Broadway. Then they gathered at Lownsdale Park and Chapman Square.

A route map was posted online just hours before the rally began.

At one point, many of those in attendance took a vow to remain non-violent.

ACLU moves onto street defending Occupy Wall Street

 Quote:
Teams of New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) legal observers, staff and volunteers have moved into the Occupy Wall Street event Friday to defend the protesters right to speak their minds from heavy-handed police according to the ACLU at noon Friday and Tweets of releived protesters. NYCLU is also offering trainings to the protesters and recording police misconduct.

"The NYCLU is here to ensure that the NYPD respect and strengthen the protest rights of all New Yorkers," the ACLU stated in a written statement that it posted on its website shortly after noon Friday.

ACLU titled its statement released Friday, "Protecting Protest at Occupy Wall Street."

"Teams of NYCLU staff and volunteers regularly visit the movement's headquarters at Zuccotti Park to distribute our Know Your Rightsinformation and engage the demonstrators' on their experiences with the NYPD," ACLU stated in a written statement Friday.

"The park's makeshift library is well-stocked with our Demonstrating in New York City and What to Do if You're Stopped by the Police guides. We're engaging the protestors on Facebook and Twitter as well."

ACLU says its royal blue-clad legal observers are also on hand, monitoring police activity and recording instances of police misconduct.

Furthermore, ACLU provided the advice, "If you or somebody you know has been the victim of police misconduct associated with the protests, if you've seen the police engaging in intimidating behavior or using video cameras in a way that chills the right to protest, or if you've seen the police doing something right, please tell us about it."

"Send an email to protest@nyclu.org and tell your story. We're collecting your videos and photos, too."

Protesters and Police advised to read rights

Two days ago, ACLU began helping the Occupiers' in the state of Virginia, providing literature on rights that they hope will be read by both protesters and police.

The Virginia state CLU said, "In anticipation of planned demonstrations around the state, the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia has released a protester’s know-your-rights informational brochure. The brochure offers basic information about the rights of protesters, the limitations of those rights, and what to do when rights are violated."

“Peaceful protests are a culturally acceptable and constitutionally protected practice,” said ACLU of Virginia Executive Director Kent Willis, “but we have noticed a growing tendency by police to overreact to them.”

“While our information is geared toward protesters, we hope law enforcement personnel will read it, too,” added Willis.

“If everyone – protesters and police alike – know the law and their limits, we’ll come through the protests without incident.”

Demonstrations in New York City attracted mainstream media attention when
over 700 protesters were arrested and many injured by police while marching on the Brooklyn Bridge after JP Morgan suddenly paid $4.6 million to the NYPD to strenghten it.

People can camp on streets overnight to buy imported iphone 4s but not to protest companies outsourcing the jobs. Number of American homes destroyed by Al Qaeda last year: 0. By banks: 1,200,000. Who are the real terrorists?

Exactly.

What Rex and the maker of that picture don't understand is that most occupiers and supporters don't hate corporations in general. The BMW in Greer, for example, provides a lot of well paying jobs to South Carolinians and run an automobile plant almost, if not completely, on environmentally sound energy. Why would I hate on that?

Nike shoes, on the other hand, offshored most of their work to places where they could engage in horrific labor and environmental practices. So, you know, fuck Nike. And, don't get me wrong, I hate it. I love Chuck Taylor's. But, I'm principled enough to know that until they change their practices I can never rock the Converse All-Stars again.

Same goes with the banks. I don't hate all banks. There are plenty of good local/regional banks, credit unions, and savings & loans that didn't take part in the madness that led to the 2008 meltdown. I don't hate them. I love them. I took my money out of a big bank and to them.

Generally, I found that most anti-corporatists know exactly what they are talking about and practice, as best they can, what they preach.

Finally, fuck Starbucks. Fuck Startbucks with an arsenic laced, spike covered telephone pole. Starbucks sucks. Support your local coffeehouse. Support your local roasters. Support South American farmers.

But the protests aren't about logic, they're about whiny little bitches whining about their lives and refusing to do anything about it.

Yes Rex. Asking questions is "testy". I can always count on you to sniff out anything "gay"...
