losing toes/feet is the first step in a long, painful process of dying for diabetics. he was trying to save himself (and probably his family) a lot of pain.
His family are a bunch of pricks if they would be relieved to have him dead.

Then enlighten me *when* life is meaningless. Enlighten me when, *exactly*, life is not worth living. Enlighten me in which ways some persons have dignified, valuable lives, and in which ways other persons don't have such lives.
