by the way, Dave. Are we limited to just western comic books? There are a lot of decent mangas out there. Junji Ito's horror stuff is very good if you like Lovecraft (that's not to say that it's similar. It just had the same depressing/gloomy feel to it).

There's also Leviathan, which sort of focuses on a mysterious guy who seems to be made from the discarded body parts of 5 scientists who went missing years ago, and it sort of ties into the antichrist/the great beast thing, while peppering the story arcs with references to Ozamu Tezuka's works (e.g. Astroboy, Black Jack), kinda like Gaiman's approach to Sandman.
