Actually they did very much change. Trump was generally leading Biden by a couple of points in most polls before Biden dropped out. Harris not only closed the gap but is generally leading Trump in polls. Notice that republicans have been publicly begging Trump to change course? And of course Trump is now looking much older with Biden out of the race. Besides being really old, last time I actually listened to Trump it also sounded like there might be some genuine cognitive decline.
