He did it to show unity at a 9/11 event. I think it was also a screw you aimed at the Democrats for kicking him out of the race.
I thought it was an impromptu gag. I thought it was funny, anyway. MAGA supporters aren't seriously (I guess?) going to think that Sleepy Joe is suddenly a Trump supporter.
