https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...st-grossing_films_adjusted_for_inflation

It's in 2 parts.
The first lists the 10 highest grossing of all time.

Quote
Highest-grossing films as of 2020 adjusted for inflation[31][Inf]

1..... Gone with the Wind ........$3,724,000,000...... 1939
2 .......Avatar ............................$3,273,000,000...... 2009
3........Titanic........................... . $3,096,000,000 ..... 1997
4 .......Star Wars........................$3,059,000,000.......1977
5........Avengers: Endgame .....$2,811,000,000.........2019
6........The Sound of Music........$2,562,000,000 ..... 1965
7........E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial..$2,501,000,000.......1982
8.......The Ten Commandments..$2,368,000,000......1956
9 ......Doctor Zhivago.................$2,244,000,000.......1965
10....Star Wars:Force Awakens..$2,213,000,000.......2015

Then a second section lists the highest grossing each year throughout film history, beginning with Birth of a Nation in 1915.

I was a bit surprised, beginning with Frankensein in 1931 and King Kong in 1933, I've seen virtually all of them. I even watched part of Birth of a Nation awhile back, but it's overly long and difficult to watch, a silent film, and the product of another era. Shortly before Olivia De Havilland died a few years ago, she said it was frustrating to be one of the last representatives of an era that people don't even understand anymore. But many of these films transcend cultural differences of being from another era, and are still as fresh and powerful as they were when created, almost a century ago. Frankenstein, From Russia With Love, Doctor Zhivago, and Raiders of the Lost Ark, all prime examples, to name just a few.

You might not agree with all the most popular films year by year, but they're mostly highly recommended movies, and a good sampling of the eras in which they were created.

Harlan Ellison once said that period movies, such as Gone With the Wind, are more representative of the era in which they were created, than of the era they portray.

An interesting year by year snapshot of 100 years of history.

From another perspective, the 50 highest grossing actors in film history.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/highest-grossing-actors-time-100057140.html

What I think is a bit misleading is that most of these actors were part of an ensemble cast for one or several blockbuster film franchises, such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel "universe" series films, Game of Thrones, Pirates of the Carribean, Jason Bourne series, or others. So most of these particular actors are not the highest grossing by their own tour de force performances, but as a random part of work mostly shaped by others, that can't really be attributed to just them, or even at all to them.

A lot of actors I'd go along with rightly being on the list, such as Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Liam Niesen, and Tom Hanks.
But many others I wouldn't have picked. I think the biggest surprise on the list was Samuel L. Jackson.

To go a little further, here's #11 to 30...

https://www.gamesradar.com/highest-grossing-movies-inflation/

(edited for space)

Quote
11. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) .................................... $2.15 billion
12. Jurassic Park (1993) ......................................................................$2.1 billion
13. Jaws (1975) ...................................................................................$2.1 billion
14. Avengers: Infinity War (2018) ........................................................$2.05 billion
15. The Exorcist (1973) .......................................................................$2 billion
16. 101 Dalmatians (1961) ..................................................................$1.95 billion
17. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) ...............................................$1.91 billion
18. The Lion King (1994) ....................................................................$1.9 billion
19. Jurassic World (2015) ............... .....................................................$1.85 billion
20. The Jungle Book (1967) ................................................................$1.8 billion
21. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999).....................$1.8 billion
22. Ben-Hur (1959) ..............................................................................$1.8 billion
23. Avengers Assemble (2012) ..........................................................$1.75 billion
24. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) .................$1.7-$1.75 billion
25. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) ..............$1.7-$1.75 billion
26. Independence Day (1996) ............................................................$1.7-$1.75 billion
27. The Lion King (2019) ....................................................................$1.725 billion
28. Fast & Furious 7 (2015) ................................................................. $1.65 billion
29. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)...........................$1.6 billion
30. Cinderella (1950) ...........................................................................$1.575 billion

I'm guessing the people behind Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind stayed in the list so long because the people in charge sensed what the future would bring for the industry, so they got together and said "Let's empty our buckets before politics, censorship, and technology come along and ruin everything."

There is no version of this where you come out on top. Maybe your army comes, and maybe it’s too much for us, but it’s all on you. Because if we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damn well sure we’ll avenge it.

Hello?
Put Natasha on the phone.
Who is this?
This is her fucking son's father. Who is this?
This is her fucking son.

Boy, you could get lost in a sky like that. I wish I had those balloons again.

Jurassic World?! Was it good?

Some random analysis of this:

* Six of the top 30 are animated. That's a surprise.
* Four are Marvel movies - no DC movies in there. That was a surprise because I thought the Nolan films had done exceptionally well and I had thought the first Superman movie was a big commercial success.
* Four are Star Wars movies. No Star Trek! Debate resolved.
* Only two horror movies (Jaws and The Exorcist.)
* Ten are science fiction movies (not counting superhero movies as sci fi) v. only two fantasy movies.

I was surprised not to see Top Gun, nor any other Tom Cruise movie.

If we are to see DC make this list, WB should do away with R-rated movies because those didn't perform well at the box office, unless they go with the Batman V. Superman route by keeping the theatrical version PG-13 and save the R-rated scenes for extended home releases. And maybe give us a popular character we haven't seen on the big screen yet. How about Nightwing? I believe he's overdue for a movie.
