He finally shows up in the very last panel of the most recent JSA! Methinks this version of Hawkman is going to shake up the DC Universe! You have been warned! (This includes you, Robbie!) Be sure to be in on the ground floor for this momentous event!

what IS the concept and appeal? he's a regular guy, who can fly with the aid of a mmaaAAAAAaaagical belt. ...oh yeah, and he has wings. ...which dont help at all. if he were more like the kingdom come version of hawkman (quite literally, a hawk-man), i'd be fine with it.

Hawkman could squash The Bat-Man into Bat-poo! <snicker!> Hawkman is the "Winged Detective", Robbie! Much like The Bat-Man he utilizes his deductive and reasoning skills. Having the Thanagarian device that put all earthly information in his head didn't hurt either! Kudos to whoever can come up with the correct spelling of this device! Asabasacons or something or another! Hawkman utilized different weapons from different eras in Earth's history or maybe a weapon from another world when he went out to fight crime! The science fiction angle was always well played also. The Adam Strange teamups were always enjoyable! Hawkman was very much into archaeology! Lots of story fodder there! Not to mention the reincarnation angle! Hawkman and Hawkgirl have always had a very special romamantic thing for one another! One of the best in comics! Drawing Hawkman brings out the best in an artist! Give Hawkman a try, Rob. I don't think you'll be disappointed...especially since you get your books for free!

ill read his first re-appearance. ill give him, and you, the benefit of the doubt. it doesnt look like a likely favorite of mine. he still has wings for no reason. however, i was never too big on ollie, but... these first few issues of his revamp are incredibly interesting. so,... we'll see.

<sigh> Much more to comic life than The Bat-Man, Robbie! I'm glad you're keeping an open mind, but you need to stop clenching those ass cheeks so tightly together or that might be the first inescapable trap The Bat-Man might never get out of!

everythings butt cheeks with you, isnt it llance?!?! ... sure, im a huge batman fan. that'll never change. he's just the coolest character and (with rucka and dini and miller) he's got the best storylines. hawkman'll always be the guy who has pointless wings to me. why not update the character a little? or, get someone to put a modern spin on him? im a big superman fan now BECAUSE of changes like that. he's still the same superman... just updated -- streamlined. cant we get a touch of that? or, does everything in "comic land" have to appeal to the "never-wrong" silver age fans?

Jeez! I forgot to mention that Hawkman can go "Wheet wheet" and this enables him to talk to birds! Bwahahahahaha! Franta, I think you're close to the name of that contraption! Warhawk? Cheap Brand X by product, obviously! This will be a new version of Hawkman, Rob! He just may be your cup of tea...or gin...or whatever! -----once over and closing my butt cheeks one at a time! (Now think about that for a long, long time!)--------

did you see warhawk? or any bit of that batman beyond episode? i mean, sure, he was probably a little generic, as if created by a mid-90s image employee... however, it was an update of a "classic" character, and thus, could appeal to both you and i. i gotta pic of the character at home. ill scan it tonight, for all to see.

No, I haven't seen WarHawk! I rarely get to see any of the WB superhero cartoons, but have always enjoyed them when I do! I'm sure I would like WarHawk, but never as a replacement for Hawkman! Maybe I'll try to pick up this WB future "JLA" book and see if it's the WB book that might make me committ!

ok, here we go! the jlu (future jla, from a batman beyond episode). from clockwise, left to right, big barda (NOT ww), green lantern (a new one), superman, warhawk, and aquagirl. again, the "warhawk" guy might look a little generic, but... he's still a HUGE improvement (in my mind) to the "classic" version, if for any reason, because he was an attempt at updating.

Thanks for getting this pic up, Robbie! Sorry to say but I'm not impressed. Did the Guardians check that kid's ID before giving him a power ring? Big Barda? Lots of better choices. Aquagirl...maybe. Warhawk looks like a pissed off Batman with wings. His costume pales in contrast to Hawkman. A different take on Superman shows promise though.

well, i dont support the WHOLE jlu. it was a cool episode of batman beyond, but, im happy with it just being contained to an episode. as for the "war hawk" character... yeah, i agree, he's nothing incredible. however, i think just the fact that they attempted to update an outdated character means its an improvement. hawkman, in my mind, IS one of those kinda characters that needs to be updated, or at least streamlined to fit in today's genres. he's just too hokey.

Rob, you are too hokey when you start using such lame expressions! Thought Roy Batty taught you better than that! This "SoreHawk" character is not an improvement or a replacement of Hawkman! He's a scowling Batman with wings! Now go to the Marvel Boards and tell your little fantasy to them! They might believe you! Hee!

So we've stooped to namecalling? Okay, wanker! You sound just like one of the little Bat-babies you mollycuddle over at the DCMB's! When SoreHawk has been in and out of the medium for fifty years then I'll concede that he may have potential, but never as a replacement for Hawkman-The King of the Winged heros!

hey, im more than willing to agree they both suck. sure, hawkman's been around for a long-ass time -- but so has plastic man. he and hula hula even had their own cartoon! (where as hawkman could only make special guest appearances on super friends). like i said before, id definitely be up to giving hawkman a try. ill read the "new" book... but ill drop it asap if it sucks. you gimme an updated character, with an interesting storyline (i.e; green arrow / superman / ultimate spider-man) ill keep on it. you gimme the same crap i feared id read about... its gone.

I've actually hit one of Robbie's nerves! Never knew he was so touchy-feely. Called me a jerk and everything! Okay, Rob. I apologize for putting down WarHawk. I haven't actually seem him in action and he could be a fine character in his own right. Nobody could ever convince me that WarHawk is a replacement or improvement for Hawkman, but I don't think that was ever the intention. I would thing the creator's just wanted an interesting character. And if you say he is interesting I have no reason to doubt you!

dont get me wrong, im not saying he's the best thing since sliced bread. (and, to be honest, i was never really that big on slice bread, until it was updated in the early 90s). he was just sorta cool, as a tie-in to a "classic" character, with an updated twist and characterization. however, im not suggesting he replace hawkman. i AM saying, however, that it might (definitely) be the right idea -- to update outdated icons. like i said before, with wonderous updates in mr. freeze, green arrow, ultimate spider-man, and most impresively, superman, there's no reason why hawkman can't undergo similar transformations; streamline the costume. update the story. connect with today's audience without alienating long-time fans. its like real estate renovation. sure, you could just make a whole brand new building, but there's something to be said for a design from the 1920s -- unique characteristics that particular buidling might have that could not be duplicated by today's architect's and designs. however... the building being from the 20s, is surely in need of some major repairs, as it can't help but show its age. dont worry, llance... im not suggesting we try to update and renovate YOU... but, i do think that comic books that do NOT get redone as such will surely fail horribly in today's market.

well, i just read the initial hawkman return in the jsa issue. spoiler space, if'n y'havent read it, heeyah: anyway... i toldjya i'd be honest. i toldjya that, if i liked the book, id be the first one to say i was wrong, id admit my faults, and id continue reading future issues. i was not wrong. the book itself, was incredibly difficult to get through. i am completely uninterested in most every member of the jsa, so, the book was disturbingly boring to me. but i read it, cuz i said i would. the story was poorly paced, the content was very reminiscient of VERY fanboyish, comic book stereotype, 80s stuff. perhaps this wasnt too fair, cuz, hawkman, himself, was only in the final two pages. so, ill give him another try, for the sake that it was, possibly, on the rest of the book that sucked.

Them's fighting words, Robbie! How can you bad-mouth the JSA? I'll admitt they've been running a little hot and cold from issue to issue for a while but I feel they've finally hit their stride ever since the Injustice Gang storyline. I am glad you're going to give Hawkman a real try as he was only at the very end of the book. Somehow though, I don't think it will make a difference. You seem to want something new and flashy and don't really want to be bothered with what has come before. That's okay if that's the way you are. At least you are honest and admitt to it and do try to explain your wants and desires when it comes to these funny books. I do want you to remember though that want has evolved into what you like nowadays was originally started way back in the stone age of comics (late 30's/early 40's) and the JSA was very much a part of it. I think it is a true testament to the superhero comic book that this group of heroes are still a viable product in this day of comic downsizing.

Whether You like the JSA or not (which I do You gotta admit the New Hawkman origin is a lot more streamlined and mystically cool than that whole Hawkworld Rebirth Shemozzle a decade or so back (which wasn't actually a bad read on it's own merits - Tim Truman) which seems to be the prime influence for ol' Warhawk. And as far as updating an old character goes. Guy with wings and a club. Flies around and whacks people. That's Timeless. You don't gotta put metal spikes on that.

Actually, I think DC should just ignore Hawkman forever and focus instead on ZAURIEL!!!! Although maybe I'm alone in that....

good point. again, i think zauriel was a great way to update a character, and yet involve a lot of the hawkman appeal (good scenes in a few jla issues, where aquaman actually referred to zauriel as hawkman). however, i can understand where zauriel wouldnt be hawkman "enough" for the more traditional fans. but, i do NOT see any reason why the traditional ways of a character cant be updated more to suit a wider audience. yes, i feel that everyone should have a favorite character, and, perhaps bringing hawkman back is a great way to appease long time fans... however... i think dc is alienating a whole new generation of fans, by not updating the character. my tried and true example of green arrow, i think, works the best. the character still has every bit the appeal that older fans enjoy, and yet, made every effort (successfully) to encorporate new fans, which ensures not only the books success, but ensures that the character will stick around for sometime, as he now has the fondness of a newer generation.

OK Rob, while I see your point, I must disagree, I'm afraid. I am what you'd call a new reader, I suppose I've been in the comics scene around five years now (I think) and never had any exposure to Hawkman (apart from Zauriel) but even me, with no prior expectations towards the character, am hyped by what's being done over in JSA at the moment. Why? Because it's a kick ass story that's very exciting. That's enough to even have me excited by the return of Hawkman. I wont read his book when it comes out, but with the creative team on that book, there excitement for what they are doing is very infectious, know what I mean?
