Whedon did explain it. Colossus did actually die when he cured the legacy virus and saved mutantkind, but by doing so earned the scorn of Ord. Ord, in his mission to eradicate the mutant gene, resurrected Colossus for the sole purpose of being the guinea pig in his experiments. The body that was cremated wasn't his, but was switched before his coffin went into the fire.
